Landslide

To understand the scope of Barack Obama's big victory in South Carolina on Saturday, consider this. Obama not only defeated Hillary Clinton by a 2-1 margin, he also won more votes in the South Carolina primary than Republican frontrunners John McCain and Mike Huckabee combined. Yes, that is not a misprint.

Democratic turnout was incredibly strong in this Republican state, indicating that the Democrats are much more excited about the race and their candidates than the Republicans were a week before. A record 530,000 Democrats voted Saturday, nearly 100,000 more than in last week's Republican primary.

Obama's numbers in this red state also suggested that he might be able to assemble a national multiracial coalition in the fall general election campaign that could compete and win in some southern states traditionally won by Republicans. About as many South Carolina white men voted for Obama as for Clinton, and about 70 percent of white voters said they would be satisfied if Obama won the Democratic nomination, according to exit polls reported in the New York Times today.

The news also spelled trouble for Clinton, whose campaign was widely criticized by fellow Democrats for negative attacks. "If the South Carolina result buoyed the Obama team, it left Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s campaign facing a new set of questions," the New York Times reported. "Her advisers’ steady attacks on Mr. Obama appeared to prove fruitless, if not counterproductive, and the attack-dog role of former President Bill Clinton seemed to have backfired."

Perhaps as a result of the negative campaigning and their enthusiasm for a viable African American candidate, black voters in South Carolina abandoned the Clintons after years of loyalty. Even black women, a targeted constituency by both campaigns, voted overwhelmingly for Obama. "More than half of black voters in the state said the country was definitely ready for a black president, while only about a quarter of white voters reached the same conclusion," the Times reported. That's a dramatic turnaround from other polls that had shown that blacks were less likely than whites to believe America was ready for a black president.

It was a stunning victory for Obama that exceeded all expectations. With Clinton and Obama now tied with 2 wins each, the battle turns to the delegate count and the Super Tuesday election on February 5. If Hillary Clinton hoped to surprise or startle Obama in South Carolina, she failed. If Obama hoped to prove himself in that state, he more than succeeded.

The pundits last night were going on and on about how they will now focus on the "white" Latino vote as they are sure they won't vote for Obama due to the mistrust and disdain that so many of the "white" Latinos have for blacks, just a mess what they have started with this racial trash. I guess they have forgot, the small fact that 8 out of 10 blacks in SC and Michigan went fro Obama, and, that there are more blacks who vote than "white" Latinos.

Her tactics are those of the past, and, voters of any race who are part on the Democratic party should let her know, they find her tactics and her man's offensive with the premise that the public needs to fear the "black man."

And, most of all, she is feeding the GOP with more than enough ammo if he is the candidate, and, hers as well, as this SC race has shown her total lack of character and integrity.

Yes...

He did that...

I'll keep you posted

Good for Obama! I am so glad the Clintons' race baiting was rejected. Their unsavory hate poltiics and lies served only to increase Obama's standing in the Black community and turned many White voters off to Clinton. The only thing worse than the Clintons' smear machine was the news media's incessant harping about race all day long on the news programs. On Saturday, I didn't hear a single talking head even discuss any policy position of either Clinton or Obama. All they talked about was race, race and more race. It was sickening! Maybe people are voting for Obama because they are sick of the news media too.

Toni Morrison, The Kennedys? At this rate Al Gore's stamp of approval could be a mere blip on the already done deal; President O'bama. The Best news all year.

Right Troy...I love Obama and his message of working with all people and all parties.

OBAMA IS THE MAN!!!!

Glad Clinton lost. I'll vote 4 anyone besides Billary. If she's such a strong, modern woman she should stand on her own record, not that of her husband's. My sister and I swore if she wins the nomination, we'll campaign for the GOP. She's in Michigan, registered in Detroit, I'm in Cleveland. I'm not an Obama fan by far, but Billary is tearing the Deomocratic party apart. Women = white women not me.

Senator Obama: "Hang In There!!"

Ted Kennedy finally ended the myth that Obama does not have the experience to be President. Kennedy's support of Obama is a major endorsement in his campaign, because older voters tend to respect the Kennedy family name and older voters have been the ones less likely to vote for Obama. The Clintons' dirty campaign tactics is back firing on them. I still have to be convinced that Obama can get a majority of the white votes needed to win the general election. However, black voters are deserting the Clinton camp in numbers that I also thought was impossible, although I have always backed Obama. I just did not know if he could win the general election.

M

To be honest, I don't tune in to the MSM "news" and didn't closely follow the controversy.

What I wish would come out is a better understanding of the community communication/information infrastructer in place among the blacks in South Carolina. How did they "get out the vote"?

That is something basic that should always happen if we value our right to vote. I hope this inspires other citizens to step up and act like it. Get involved. VOTE

I wish Obama the best. I'm praying daily for his victory. Go Obama! Maybe Senator Clinton could run as his VP or vice-versa? Either way, we can not let the Republicans slime their way back into the 'White House'!

Normally, I would not be interested in the Republican primaries/caucuses this early. But, I have to comment on pure stupidity. Rudy Giuliani likes to give the impression that he is intelligent and experienced. What idiot would put all his hopes and resources in one state, Florida, to the point of totally ignoring all other states in his campaign? If Obama did something so stupid, I would track him down, and then whip his butt - bodyguards or not.

M

MLee,

Florida with its many Ney York/Northeast expats. was Rudy's last hope. It was a gamble, a hail mary that just didn't work. But you can't fault the guy for trying, and hopefully nobody got killed. Probably had to spend up the campaign funds too or (god forbid) reach into his own finances to fund the money return.

Obama will transform the country if the young people do not let their grandparents steal the day. This country leaders have not failed we have failed our democracy. And Bark reminds us how to claim it back.
