Black LGBT Film Trivia Contest

This is the big week! The new movie, Dirty Laundry, hits theaters on Friday. It's the first black gay film to be released in theaters in years. So to celebrate, I'm offering 2 free tickets to see the show this Friday in Los Angeles or New York to the winner of this Black LGBT Film Trivia Contest.
If you're not in New York or LA, you can still play, and you will get a free copy of the DVD when it's released in 2008. Here's the question. Each of the following actors (listed below) has played a major role as, or in a film with, a black LGBT character. And it didn't kill their careers either. Match the actors to the films below. The first person to answer the question correctly wins the tickets or the DVD. Good luck!!

PLEASE!!!!I did not mean to call Michael Warren a besexual. I meant the 1970s were "bisexual" (homos, especially queens were in vogue). Lord, I don't want Keith to get sued.
Although, I did kinda' pray that handsome Michael Warren could've been bisexual...did the same thing for Howard Rollins Jr. Got more than just "bisexual" with Howard, but then he went away. God Bless him.

I literally just saw NORMAN IS THAT YOU last week! In the 1977 comedy (adapted from a Jewish stage play), Redd Foxx finds out his son, Michael Warren, is gay! Pearl Bailey plays the mother, who runs off with Redd Foxx's character's brother. I never even knew about that movie, but I was reading about Redd Foxx recently and the movie was mentioned. Check it out if you can find it.

Um, I don't think any of the actor you have named is in Ski Trip. And Jenifer Lewis, Terry Vaughn, and Sommore weren't in any of the movies. Ironic that they are all in a movie not mentioned, *wink.

LOL. Now I didn't expect Patrik-Ian Polk, the director of Punks and Noah's Arc, to respond. I don't know if that's fair to everyone else. (-: But we'll figure something out.

Just had to say that I was lucky enough to catch a private screening of Dirty Laundry last year here in Dallas and enjoyed it; Jennifer Lewis in particular was a hoot and a half, of course. I also got a huge kick from watching Maurice Jamal express his inner butchness in the movie,(he made me a believer.) At any rate, in show of my support, I'm looking forward to catching it at least once more after its release this Friday. Congrats to you Keith as well as to your boy Nathan Hale Williams, and also Maurice Jamal for the well done results of your collabarate efforts!
You all should go check it out for sure.

Ski trip must have been thrown in as its a cold day in NYC ;)? As for "Punks" it would be nice to get a reply.
Great movies on the list.

I saw Norman is that you before I even knew what a gay man was(I guess I always was a fag hag LOL!). I am not going to even try and answer the questions. I JUST came online. Been too busy running my mouth on the phone with a woman who ain't trying to leave her damn man. ANYWAY! Anthony Mackie played in 'Brother to Brother'(awesome indy film!), Rupaul in 'but I'm a cheerleader' Nathan Hale 'too damn cute' Williams in 'ski trip', Chris Tucker in 'the fifth element(was he gay or just flamboyant and weird'), Whoopi Goldberg in the color purple(Definitley gay in the book)and don't forget 'boy's on the side with Drew Barrymore. Oh hell, I'm done. It was fun though. And when is the movie going to be released nationally? Does anyone know when it is coming to Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area? Please let me know.

ok i am not going to post the answers because i have looked and there has already been someone to respond in a timely manner, so, instead, i want to engage in a conversation about some of these films. It seems as if the phrasing/tone of the trivia question is celebratory: "Here's the question. Each of the following actors (listed below) has played a major role as, or in a film with, a black LGBT character. And it didn't kill their careers either." Now i understand the intent is to show that more black actors need to either play gay--which is a debatable topic, the straight person playing gay that is, in its own right--or engage with black, and i would posit or expand to include all racial minorities, gay subject matter, but, seriously i am not sure all of actors above should be celebrated--implied or otherwise. For instance: (see following comment)

Surely Maurice Jamal has enough free tickets to the premiere of his movie that he could give to his fellow Black LGBT film director/writer/producer Patrik-Ian Polk so the REST of us have a chance to win tickets to Dirty Laundry this weekend?

December 5 2007, 12:39AM
Keith - Great question (even though I didn't read it in time to win the tickets. I have to agree with Loi Wade - I don't think Chris Tucker was gay or bi in the Fifth Element. I think he was just "flamboyant and weird." Also Loi, great shout out about Whoopi also playing a lesbian in Boys on the Side. Also, don't forget Forest Whitaker also played gay in Ready to Wear (I luv him). And Terry Vaugh played a lesbian in the television series Soul Food. One more actress that has not suffered for playing lesbian - Nia Long was great in Broken Hearts Club.

How on earth could I forget about Nia Long in Broken Hearts Club! She and her partner were having a baby, right? Wasn't one of the gay guys the father? You mentioned some great ones, Jason. Maybe you should come to my house this weekend for my 'gay boy' movie night. If you don't mind hanging with a bunch of beautiful women who love gay men LOL!

I just heard you on Al Sharpton's show. It's amazing that when gay issues are discussed on black oriented radio most of the callers, especially males, want to condemn gays to hell. You handled it well, Keith! I'm going to see the movie, whenever it comes to my city.

I also caught Keith and Crystal McCrary on Al Sharpton's radio show earlier today, and I mean the level of ignorance in the name of religion within the black church never ceases to amaze me. I hasten to add that the Rev. Sharpton is truly an exception and has earned my respect even more so after today. Unfortunately too many of his bible thumping listeners called in and exhibited the same old fearful bigotry for which the church is known AND THEY COULDN'T EVEN RECOGNIZE THEIR OWN PREJUDICES AND PHOBIAS AS SUCH! It was actually a bit astonishing. Anyway; regardless, Keith and Crystal, and even the Rev., fielded all calls with class, diplomacy and most of all patience and I just would like to commend them all for rising above some of those ridiculously antagonizing call-ins, to stand in representation of where we as a people and community should be now in the 21st century.

One of the things we could do when a black gay spokesperson is being interviewed on a call-in type radio/tv show, is call in (in numbers) to counter the homophobic callers and create the impression that "we are everywhere" (which we are).
White gays used to do something like this back in the 1980s and 90s (I was a member of a white gay human rights organization from 1988 to 1992), just to create havoc with homo-hating white megapreachers like Jerry Falwell and the others. The white gays would call in to their (the megapreachers) radio/tv shows and try to jam up the lines. Sometimes they succeeded.
It's interesting that the white megapreachers (like Falwell) are dying out, one by one, and the new white megapreachers seem somewhat more subdued in their homophobic rhetoric than their forefathers. Hopefully, a similar pattern will prevail with the black megapreachers (if we do our work).
