They came to his home to do violence. Americans believe you have the right to own guns to protect yourself, don't they? And if the white teens were calling folks "niggers" on the phone, what makes anyone think they didn't use that word when they blocked Mr White's driveway? The incident was racially motivated.

On another blog that I visit regularly(guess which one), some there would say what if it were the other way around? What if 5 black teens went to a white man's home with baseball bats. Well, then, you'd have 5 black teens (not one) shot 300 times by the homeowner, neighbors, and the police. The wife would've fired a few shots too.

The NRA should be helping to pay Mr. White's defense attorneys' fees.

Wow...America is still a very depressing place. Yet and still seeing a documentary regarding African Law and Customs lat night it really seems as if even over there the law and justice dispensed thereof is skewed..Idont know..The saying goes when you come to start shit dont be surprised when you get shitted. They were racially motivated ALL the way..and what was the teen doing to manhdnle the gun away from the father ?..He most likely wouldve used that very gun on that family so I feel the guy was warranted..But one other thing..For Mr.White to live in a suburb and whatnot why didn he take the time out to purchase himself a registered gun ? Shit even thewife could've gotten a registered gun if he didnt feel safe about it.

Ok, I've had enough of this nonsense. Keith you wouldn't have even written about this story had the other teenagers who'd confronted Mr. White's sons had been black, which happens all to frequently. I am just weary of the outcries when black men are victims of crimes perpetrated by whites but everyone is silent about the overwhelming majority of black men who are victimized by other black men. Additionally, Keith, the Michael Sandy incident you referenced had nothing to do with him being targeted because he was black and you know this. Come on Keith, you are far too intelligent to post misleading articles like this. I'm waiting for you to wax philosophical about Sean Taylor's murder and how our culture contributed to it and this is what you give us instead?? Truth is, black men have much, much more to fear in each other than they do in angry bigoted white men.

This article hit home for me because I have been in a similiar situation and sometimes I wish I had handled it differently. When angry people, intoxicated with liquid courage, show up at your home with weapons you have no idea what to expect. He probably could have handled the situation better but under pressure like that your mind is going in all kinds of places and the natural thing to do is protect yourself and family. I feel an abundance of sympathy for the family of Daniel Ciccario and with our judicial system I feel the same sympathy for the White family.

I would have done exactly what Mr. White did!!

Callingthe police and even waiting for the police would be only a band-aid on the problem. If they wanted to beat up Mr. White's son, they would do it another day or when he was at school and that would be a four on one fight. It was necessary to confront them in the moment, when their tempers were raised. The only way to deal with a bully is to face him and make him or her feel your conviction not to be victimized by them for one second. If I had a mob trying to hurt me or "Lynch me," I would want my father, mother, friends, neighbor, etc help me end the madness right then and there. If the racial situation would have been reversed, as in the Jena Six case, there wouldn't even be a court case.

As mush as I complain about living in the mid-west, that is one thing they have correct down here in Texas. With the "Stand Your Ground Law" ,pasted last year, the right to defend you and your property, to include deadly force, extends to your property line and your car. A baseball bat can be a deadly weapon. And it's unreasonable to have to wait until being swung upon. Proximity is relevant when considering immediate threat.

I feel sorry for Mr.White,but even sorrier for his son no telling what abuse he has endured. There are beautiful Black suburban & urban neighborhoods all over. I don't know about gun regulations in the States-and I actually don't think that's relevant-but ownership of a deadly weapon should make one think before action-especially a 53 year old. Centuries of blatant racism in America played a major role in all of this despite what prosecutors are claiming...but in my opinion he's guilty of killing someone and should be sentenced accordingly.

Still, I believe that Mr. White and his son should have stayed in his home and called the police. Now, a young man is dead and Mr. White may go to jail. This news story is totally appropriate for this blog. THis is not just a blog geared towards the concerns of Gay people, it's a blog geared towards the concerns of Black people.

Would Keith have written the story had the attackers been Black? Maybe not. Black on black is not news. But he would have written on it had Mr White or his son been Gay, and been attacked by a gay-bashing mob (White or Black). As Gays, most visitors to this blog would have wanted to know about such an incident. And as Blacks, most of us are very interested in the actual story presented here.

What made those thugs think they could get away with attacking the home of a grown man--a father with his famly in danger?

As I said, had the boys been Black, and the father White, all 5 would be dead, and most of the country would have agreed with a white Mr White. I'm not sure Black boys would've been crazy enough to attack some White man's family...well, nowadays, who knows?

Keith, ironically a similar *situation happened in suburban St. Louis* - either most or all of the parties involved were black. A high schooler was followed home by a mob after a fight took place. The mob was encouraging the two boys to continue fighting. The boy went into the home. The mob started banging on the windows of the house and yelled for the boy to come out. The boy and his mother came out with guns.

Members of the mob kept antagonizing the mother and the boy (ON THEIR FRONT LAWN) and both of them chased the mob - busting caps at them all in the suburbs. Unfortunately, one kid was killed. The mother was around the same age of Mr. White. Police arrested her and her son citing that the mother should have stayed in the home and allowed the police to address the matter.

I disagree. Once intruders - who intend to do bodily or physical harm - step on your property - blast them into oblivion. Sorry but that is how I feel.

Why is there a debate on this subject? If the four teenagers would have been Black, they would have arrested the other three for assault and attempted murder. Yes, the police would have ruled the bat was a weapon. Let four black men run up on the police with bats and see what happens. All would be dead. The father should have just stated he was in fear of his life and that of his son. Bottom line, these kids were aggressive and carried an arm weapon and intended to do damage. And, let's not write off a bat as some light weapon. Unless it was a plastic bat, a regular bat can kill and do so serious damage. I am glad the father handled his buisness. It shows a lack of respect when you come on another person's property to start a fight.

I too am wondering why he only shot one of them. Did he run out of bullets? I would have emptied the chamber on those punks. They came to his home to do bodily harm and at least one of them got just what they deserved. If this were in Jena, La. and the mob had been Black boys at the home of a White family, they would have been shot dead and then charged with the theft of bullets from the White man that shot them. To me, this isn't even a racial issue, other than the fact that the punks were using the N word. Even if they hadn't been using racist language, their behavior warranted the response. Also, you ever notice how everyone named "White" is Black?

If five teen would have came to my house in two cars with bats going after my son whether they were black , white, hispanic, asian, etc, there would have been chalk outlines for each of them where they were standing. This has nothing to do with race. This man has a right to protect his family. What if those boys would have broke his windows out of his house or something with those bats? I'm sorry that someone had to lose their life in this situation, but just think, if the boys would have stayed at the party and not follow the boy home, he would still be alive today. We always want to blame the person that pulled the trigger, but we never look at the victims actions.

Baisden would be organizing a march for justice if those officers were not arrested. Mr. White understandably wanted to protect his son. The gun that "accidentally" fired in the face of a 17 year old boy was not accidentally loaded, & it wasn't an accident that Mr. White stepped outside with the gun in his hand. I would do whatever it takes to protect my family. In doing so, that doesn't absolve me of the consequences of my actions. A boy is dead. Everything else falls under "extenuating circumstances," & these factors were surely considered when the charges were reduced from murder to manslaughter.

That 53 year old man was born in the 50's, and saw the turmoil thereafter then, and in the 60's and so on, so he knows what a truck full of angry white people with weapons are all about. It was wrong to shoot the child, He should of shot a warning shot in the air, but that wouldn't have stopped the white boys; like one of the boys being killed, from future harassment by the white community on the son, mother, and father if he's not found guilty. Thank God the black boy was able to get home before those kids caught up to him.

I do agree with Thirtydaes, Terrence, and Bingo that we can't forget the black on black crime that's killing our society more effectively than modern day white racism is. Let's acknowledge both sides of the street that are effecting our community. Like Jeff Hobbs said, I'd like to know what went on with the black boy and the white girl in that chat room. And where were the parents of these teen thugs when they were boozing it up at a party? Somebody needs to be charged with distributing alcohol to minors.

It's no different from a gun. I have no sympathy for this teenager because it's clear they lacked respect for authority or better yet Black people. This is not the first time I have heard a group of teenagers running up or in a person's home in the suburbs. When you charge onto another persons property with or without a weapon making threats you have walked into a danger zone. In this case, he created his on issue. If the situation was reverse, and a group of Black boys charged onto a White persons property under the same circumstances, I would say the same thing.

On a personal level, I do not believe White was justified in the slaying of the white boy.

He should've stayed inside of his home and called the police. If he were already outside his home when they arrived that would be a different story.

This sort of vigilante justice really needs to stop.

I find it chilling that most people agree that Mr White was justified in using his unregistered gun. He did kill the boy! With an illegal gun! If the police had been there before the tragic shooting, he woulda been charged for possessing that weapon. He knew all this prior to stepping outside the door. He's in his 50's for goodness' sakes! Like someone said, why didn't he shoot in the air? The kids woulda peed their pants and run off for damn sure! And he would have had to face another lesser charge than taking someone's life (thug or not). That's in my opinion a reasonable thing to do. He needs to be held accountable for his actions.

Just curious for all of ya'll who say he was wrong, what if a mob tried to bust into your house? Would you just sit there and wait 5, 10, 15 minutes if you are lucky for the police? The laws in this country have always been behind the homeowner when his safety is threatened with an intruder, and, they should remain that way.

Any incident which involves Black people and White people in the United States is a racial incident whether the participants realize it or not.

I'm about as liberal as a Black ma..."queen" can get regarding race relations, but I aint no historically unaware fool. I'm not going to disregard 400 years of history when looking at the the status of race relations in this country in 2008. Our, I repeat, OUR whole history as a nation is interwoven with the effort (maybe successful effort) to maintain white supremacy in OUR country. It aint pretty but it's true.

As distant from Black America as Dumb OJ is, his 1st trial was so racial that many Black folks who knew he was guilty still supported his acquittal because of the horrible race relations between police and Blacks. His upcoming trial? Who cares? He aint even pretty no more.

I'm sorry a person had to lose their life over this but you cannot go to someone's house looking for a fight and not expect to be in danger yourself. The father could have very well waited for the police, but let's be honest, Blacks on the whole do not have a lot of faith in the police in this country. Would you sit idly by while your property is being destroyed by a mob of drunk teenagers and hope that the police get their in time enough to prevent you from being killed or seriously hurt? Get Real! The survival instinct will kick in sooner (not later), and you will defend you and yours by any means necessary. I agree with the points made about how the NRA should be all behind this one, because it is a classic case of a person protecting their person and property. Although immoral, this may not be illegal.

In most juridictions, you have to right to use violence if you are in immediate danger. White placed himself in that danger by walking outside.

I know that most people believe that you can shoot someone for standing in your driveway, but you can't, not in most states.

J, I'm not sure what constitutes him not being a "man" by shooting someone who came to his house with a bat.

Further, "myspace whores" doesn't seem like the appropriate word for a mob of guys coming to his house with a bat.

He is guilty of bringing a gun to a knife fight. Given, however, today's climate and brewing racial tensions that exists in this great land of the free and home of the phobic, his reaction is not only warranted but expected.

My experiences with racism haven't been pretty, but any reaction or response associated with an eminent threat
ones life should be understandable.

MY questions are:

- has White been a victim of this kind of racism in the past?

- if so, how did he handle it then?

- what role did the murder of his uncles play in his his decision to respond the way he did.

- if he were faced with this situation again, would he respond differently or the same

What was Mr. White suppose to do? Wait in his house for the mob to break in and drag his son out? I have no doubt if he did not have that unregistered gun, he and his son would both be dead. You may look at those White boys as babies, but in a pack they are very unpredictable and dangerous as hell. Now add alcohol to the mix. It is just history repeating itself, and you already know the outcome if Mr. White had not responded in the way he did. I value human life, but everything is out the window when my life or a loved ones life is in danger.

He not only jumped the gun(no pun intended) but he pulled an illegal piece on a bunch of white kids. He wanted to get locked up. Now his wife and children are left alone and are vulnerable to attacks by all kinds of Nazi organizations. Who, no doubt, will feel it is their 'duty' to avenge their white brothers death.

If I were in that situation, I would have called the police and said there are a bunch of white kids on my property with a bat. I do have the legal right to hurt them don't I? They would have been there before I hung up. If this isn't a wake up call to black men that white women still yell 'rape', I don't know what is. Those kids had some nerve. The only good thing about this is that next time they will think twice about trying to bully someone.

I've been in similar situations, and the regrets are just as powerful if you don't use extreme force (if you got any). You may regret it the rest of your "do the right thing" life.

Keith, I know this has nothing to do with this story,but it does have to do with blatant homophobia and racism. You should print an article on the fools protesting your mans movie 'Dirty Laundry'. I clicked on the link in the sidebar and read the comments. They not only attack gays but blacks as well. And they don't try and cover it up. I'm a straight white man, came across this after reading the story and googling.

My take? I have a lot of sympathy for Mr. White. Too bad the kid died, but he shouldn't have been threatening someone in front of his own house. I've got a lot of trouble thinking a crime was committed here. Yeah, Mr. white should have waited on the front porch and let them come to him - would have certainly looked better in court. And he should have called the cops.

But fundamentally, they came to HIS house.

No need to put it in Black/White terms. Yeah, racists exist. But I'm pretty sure that if you polled white people in this country, most would be at least moderately supportive of Mr. White. What the grand jury came out with is evidence of that.

Thanks, Loi. You know, I didn't even go back to the site after I posted. They were attacking Nathan Hale's film for ridiculous reasons. I think you and I were trying to achieve the same goal: to show those Christian fanatics that hyporcrisy may be the greatest legacy American "Christians" have accomplished--with the slaughter of the Native Americans, and the building of this country with the blood of Africans/African Americans.
That was my first time on a right-wing Christian blog. They're lunatics...well, so am I, but I don't bother nobody.

When someone comes at you in a group with a baseball bat it is to do violence and to be charged while protecting yourself is just plain wrong. The death is a sad fact that violent behavior begets violent solutions. That drunken bravado, like grabbing for a gun, is always a bad idea. Mr. White is not guilty because some drunken teen grabbed for a gun and it accidently discharged.

I may not have had a gun to protect myself with. But
if I had one I would have used it when I was attacked by a mob with a baseball bat, and if they tried to grab for it I would imagine a similiar outcome. I believe Mr. White is charged because he isn't "white enough" and shame on the courts for being no better than a lynch mob themselves in that regard. The man should be released and all charges dropped, let the mob of white teens pay for the cost already acrued by the state in this matter.

an indirect case of a white girl screaming rape by a black man. She went to the white boys, they reacted, and went after him. But...what has changed is that Black people have stop running, and are confronting these beast that show up in their face.

Mr. White defended himself, clear and simple. You do not roll up in anyone's home with the 'intent' to do harm, and not expect to receive it.

Who's responsible; the white girl who started the whole thing. Her bigotry (even though the young man left), lit the fire. That wasn't good enough, she wanted the young bloods, blood, sacrafice. She will have to live with the death of her buddy, not Mr. White. She should be up in court facing charges.

If you take the time to have a conversastion with one, you will see exactly what I am talking about. They are not right upstairs. I don't see why black women get so upset or my babies (black gay men. yes I am a serious fag hag LOL!) either for that matter. They ain't loosing out on shit. I wouldn't want that headache.

As for black women doing battle with white women, I relish the challenge. Of course, that is the last thing it is, because I always win. I am too well armed. Can't you tell? It takes a lot to shut me up. I don't give a damn. That is why I use my real name.

And,UIB, you are also right. I hope his lawyer has the sense enough to bring up those very points. You might be kidding about bringing charges against the white girl, but in actuality they should. She should be charged with inciting a riot that resulted in a death. Had it not been for her unwarranted actions(the boy left the party) her friend would still be alive.

loi wade thanks, and I am serious about charges being brought up on the white girl. This experience should haunt and plague her for life. The whole incident started with her! -clear and simple. Why didn't she go to her parents, and not to a bunch of hyped-up 'intoxicated' teenage boys. Was the Black young man invited to the party?

She lied, just like this white woman (some time ago) accused this Black man of murdering her children. She got up on national television and swore her children was murdered by a Black man, and he raped her. Later, come to find out; she murdered her own children. But because she was white, America believed her story first.

This time (and thanks in part to strong Black women like you) the Black family stood-up, and (no-pun) shut the white boy up. But the white girl (I'm sure) is being embraced like she is the victim.

Its really sad! One thing about it weather white or black a parent, a homeowner, a man will do what ever it takes to9 protect. When i was a child i had problems with young black kids (i'm black too) my dad came to the door with a gun and scared the kids away. The problem is young people don't scare the same anymore they don't respect, not even there parents so what are we to do. One thing is go back to praying for direction. My prayers are with all involed in this situation. All jury, judge, pros. ect....

It amazes me who this whole thing has become racial, a 17 year old boy was shot to death. My parents never fought my battles for me, and maybe if this man did the same a child would not have died that night. It is unfortunate that these boys showed up looking for a fight, and it is foolish on all involved that they were intoxicated and driving cars, and yes these boys were hot-headed, but that were boys not thinking clearly, they were invinicible due to alcohol consumption. I think everyone has to stop playing the race card every time there is an issue between whites and black. This is just ridiculous

Peter, the guilty verdict really did not surprise me, considering the racial mix of that area. As I said in previous postings, if I was in the same situation as Mr. White all 5 boys would be dead, knowing beforehand that I may have to pay a heavy price. One thing Mr. White’s lawyers did wrong was claiming the shooting was an accident. The case should have been presented as self defense. He would have had a better chance even though it still may not have been enough for that jury. Did you see on the news yesterday the family and friends in the court room after the verdict of the boy who died? Many of them looked like skin heads. Mr. White’s son didn’t even send the email that the white girl accused him of sending that set off the whole mess.
