If He Did It

There's a lot about Barry Bonds we may not know, but we do know he's good for provocative pictures and juicy newspaper headlines. And now it seems his run is coming to an end. Not long after we learned that another aging black athlete, O.J. Simpson, will have to stand trial in Las Vegas for kidnapping and robbery charges, word came that Barry Bonds had been indicted for federal criminal charges of lying to a grand jury.

I have said before that Bonds, like any other suspect or defendant, is entitled to the law's presumption of innocence. But Bonds is such a well known and polarizing public figure that it's hard to imagine how he, or O.J. for that matter, will be able to find an impartial jury to try his case. As if to prove that point, the New York Post ran a banner headline this morning calling Bonds a "LIAR." And it's a safe bet that a lot of other Americans made up their minds yesterday as well.

Bonds is charged with lying to a federal grand jury during the BALCO investigation into steroid use in sports. Even when given immunity, prosecutors say, Bonds denied that he had used steroids, which they contend is false.

I don't know if Bonds is guilty or innocent, but it's certainly looking more and more likely that he's guilty every day. The "before and after" photos depicting Bonds bulking up over his career provide some quick anecdotal evidence of possible steroid use, but they don't conclusively prove that Bonds reached his current size with the help of illegal substances. But try telling that to a jury!

If Bonds did knowingly use steroids, and if prosecutors can prove it in court, he may be looking at some jail time. And if so, all that could have been avoided if he had cooperated with investigators from the beginning. Of course that would have sullied his reputation in baseball, but nothing like the damage that will be done to his rep if he is convicted.

If professional athletes have learned anything this year from the experiences of Michael Vick and O.J. Simpson, they should know that they are not above the law. If Bonds is guilty – and he knows if he is or isn't – now is the time to put his house in order.

so the white man that provided Barry with the roids got out of jail yesterday and the white men that were with OJ and instigated the situation are all plea bargaining. Only the black men will face the music. Can somebody please tell me why these Black Male Athletes continue to trust the white man.

Luther

This is one of those cases where if he wasn't so cocky and arrogant, more people would give him a chance to explain himself, and, I don't think it has anything to do with race this time. OJ is a fool plain and simple since he knew these white folks were just waiting for him to screw up, and, he is going to jail and he knows it, they are going to dot every "i" and cross every "t" to make so, and, Vick? Anyone who kills dogs is hardly worthy of defense. But, if, some fell they are, I can respect that, just can't agree.

Equalnox

I don't particularly like Barry Bonds, I think he's a sociopath, but I have to admit he's looking pretty hot in that sleeveless black shirt and those white baseball pants. Mmmm.

Derrick from Philly

He isn't very likable, is he? But still, he shouldn't be in jail. Who wouldn't lie to federal authorities? They aren't likable either. It aint like he was selling crack (or in his case, ritzy powdered cocaine). Fine him a lot of money or something...make him listen, for a whole weekend, to speeches by the current candidates for president--that's worst than lethal injection.

Dennis

Bebe, those white men were smart enough to start talking when they realized there was ample evidence against them. OJ and Bonds are facing the music because they insist on their innocence in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. They are, of course, entitled to do so, but I'm not going to feel sorry for them or villify other people for their studipity.

bubba

How convenient that this news provides the excuse to see Bonds as both a drag queen and a muscle queen.

Luther

Derrick, I'm not wishing jail on him, its just that I don't understand how he ended up in this position. This guy has/had, all the talent in the world, and its just sad that he is involved in this hot mess. Had he been a player like Tony Gwynn of the Padres, and, this sort of allegation came out, I would be as loud as I could to protest his innocence. But, with Bonds, lets hope he's got the coins to defend himself, because, like it or not, public opinion still counts in this sort of thing, something he never seemed to have learned.

Barry Bonds hasn't been convicted of anything yet. Everybody thought that Michael Jackson was on his way to the big house on those child molestations charges and he was acquitted. Don't they love BB in San Francisco? If BB's trial is held in San Francisco, he might get off too. He ought to have the money to hire the best attorneys.

BB must have a great sense of fun and humor to appear as a drag queen in public and he is hot in that sleeveless black shirt.

Jerry

I thought Barry was doing a less-fashionable homage to Serena Williams there for a minute.

Blue

The photo on the right is sexy as shit. Good lord ...

But anyway ... I don't know what to think. It wreaks of a witch hunt, but at the same time, he brought this shit on himself just like Marion Jones, Michael Vick, TI and any other idiot out there. So I can't feel but so sorry for him. I have mixed feelings about this whole issue of 'roids. Personally, the officials in the glass offices need to be held to some level of accountability because, as is the case with pro wrestling, they turn a blind eye to the shit until things get hot. Then everybody wants to get on a soapbox and talk about rules. When the money's rolling in and flashbulbs are popping, nobody talks about that. So I don't know ...

manchild1

I knew Bonds was hypin the way he was cut,so even though
he was denying it...now sayin he did not know he took
steroids...I say please negro...yah went from 190 wet
to 350 dry...yah head is blown up like a basketball....
its roids. And OJ just need better lawyers and peeps
around his scary ass...who knew the juice was a thug?

Kevin

One way or another, the truth will come out. How BB handles it though will make all the difference.

Ostend Street

Just think what could happen if these major egos; i.e., Simpson, Vick, and Bond, where channeled in a different direction to really assist in making a better world. Who am I fooling? These are major egos out of control. At this point they seem to have problems assisting themselves.

Solo

All of the negative comments being written here and pretty much everywhere else in the media is a perfect example of how effective the media is in getting the public to hate! Barry Bonds hasn't been convicted of anything but everyone is sure he's guilty. I expect this sort of reaction from white people but when Blacks start falling for this nigger bashing crap thats when it gets really scary. Barry Bonds deserves the benifit of the doubt until proven otherwise and a simple indictment doesn't rise to that level. Not being likeable or arrogant isn't illegal and doesn't exclude him from being considered innocent until proven guilty. What is at play here is a little bit of racism mixed together with a little bit of jealousy. Success breeds envy especially when it comes in the form of a Black man. BB carries himself with dignity and respect, as a result he's accussed of being arrogant. Afterall we all know Black men are suppose to be clowns and were put here to entertain like trained monkeys!

Nathan James

I must respectfully disagree with Keith on his assertion that "all that could have been avoided if he had cooperated with investigators from the beginning." As an attorney, Keith ought to know better. If you are the target of an investigation, the investigators are NOT the people you should be "cooperating with", but rather, you should get a lawyer, because, you need one at that point!

Bonds had to know this was coming. I can't understand how he imagined they weren't coming after him. Again, this goes all the way back to Ben Johnson and if they want to make you guilty, you'll be guilty!

'dre

Come on Solo, no one did this to Barry Bonds, no one made him and intolerable jerk but Barry Bonds. His attorneys are also part of the blame, one would think with his money he would have hired a better team.

This is one of those cases that does not warrant the race card, only, the over paid, uncouth athelte one.

Karmatic

Solo speaks the truth!!

In observing this story play out, I've noticed that most of the "so called" baseball fans are nothing but a bunch of kool aid drinking racists..I guess those same purists have selective memory when it comes to Mark McGwire's steriod use...I'll just ignore this story for now on because it just plain pisses me off...

Dean Green

The big question is not whether Barry Bonds used steriods. He's has admitted to taking substances that later were disclosed to be steriods. So that question has been answered. The question is did he know that the substances were steriods at the time he took them or before he testified that he knew of no prior steriod use by him when he testified before the federal grand jury.

There is also a count of obstruction of justice, which I suppose stems from the perjury charge. I'm in the Bay Area and it appears that the case against him is weak. There is the testimony of his embittered (and so biased and less than completely credible) former mistress who didn't get the Mrs. that she wanted. (He married another woman but kept he on as the mistress.) The man who would have direct testimony to many of the pertinent facts (Bond's former trainer) refuses to testify. I wonder what, if any, tricks of the sleeve the feds have to make this seemingly weak case a strong one. Time will tell.

KB

What racism? Plenty of white folks get busted for doping in sports all the time: cycling, weightlifting, wrestling, various Olympic sports. You need to do your research.

Folks are skeptical of his innocence not because he is Black, but because the changes to his body (weight, size, cap size) are outside the bounds of normalcy. Even his shoe size went from 11 to 13 1/2 in his mid-30s -- how can that occur when you are not getting illegal help? It can't.

Any observation that BB "carries himself with dignity and respect," means that you haven't seen very many press conferences where he has lost his temper, cursed, stormed off, and created a bigger news story by his lack of professionalism and unsportsmanlike behavior than the question posed to him. Roid rage? Perhaps. But while he is innocent until proven guilty, that doesn't mean that an objective analysis of the circumstances cannot lead people to speculate that his own behavior, not race, are at the heart of the matter.

Darnell

I guess that muscle shirt and drag has many caught off guard and turned them on, so, pulling out the race card, when there is no need. Bonds is a big, bad stud, he can defend himself.

When they held the "investigation" on Capitol Hill, Mark McGwire and the rest of them looked like deer in headlights, as they all knew they had been busted. I don't think the case will stand, kind of weak, but, his rep? I'll just leave that to history.

Racism? Not in this instance. All you have to do is look at his "growth" over the past few years to realize, something is up, but, that's just my take on it.

MLee

Barry Bonds has always denied using steroids “knowingly”. His former trainer who supposedly gave Bonds shots isn’t talking, even after spending a year in jail. What has not been “widely” reported until now is that Barry has tested positive for steroids on a couple of different occasions. The first time, it is possible he did not know he was taking steroids. What about the second time? Barry’s only possible defense is that positive tests can be wrong.

Andy

Maybe he should have did what Martina Hingis did with her positive result, call a press confrence, cry, blame the testing site and tell the world he wants to clear his name.

And the big deal with performance enhancing drugs is...? I don't see why there was a grand jury indictment anyway. It's his damn body. There are certain vitamins that do the same damn thing. Hell yeah he lied , I don't blame him. He was backed into a corner. Tell the truth and you're screwed. Lie and you just MIGHT get away with it. He got caught , but at the time what were the better odds. Just like poor Marion Jones. I feel so damn sorry for her.

don

to Solo, I understand the point you're trying to make but don't agree with it at all. I met barry bonds as a kid, the bastard tried to get me ask my mother for money before he would sign my bat I told him my mother didn't have money to give him & he signed the bat & practically threw it at me & rolled his eyes & walked away like I had just wasted his time, I cried when I got home. I'm not jealous of him I know from experience he has the nastiest attitude in all of sports & doesn't give a rats ass about you or anyone else who defends him.

Luther you hit it right on the money, Tony Gwynn is the bomb, if you're looking for a self respecting ball player who loves & respects his fans & appreciates every day that he's given Tony is your man.

loi wade

solo You are so right about the 'jealousy' comment. Whites can't stand not being the superior race. They want Barry and they are going to get his ass. If he gets away with this, They are going to hunt him down. Look at stupid ass O.J.. Like 'Alex' said in Noah's ARC ' She ain't evah gon' learn'. White folks wanted his ass and he jumped right in the net. Marsha Clarke made him her mission. That bitch had an orgasm when that hotel tape was released. Looks like Michael Jackson is the only one that has finally had enough of white folks. His current fake wife is black.

J

I will never understand why some people think these types deserve our support or why some call it racism.

Fuck Barry and any other ignorant princess like him. He's disgusting. I'm amazed our country is actually wasting time and money on BS like this. Who cares if that idiot wants to shoot himself in the ass, turn his organs into peas, and his jock into a tic tac?

I have to wonder about the people who actually find this roided tool attractive.

I mean really, the comic book bod is sexy? He's like a damn transformer. Can he even wipe? I don't see what he could possibly do in the bedroom unless you have a fetish that involves opening a big jar or ripping phone books.

manchild1

Barry did not know he was on roids? As one who has
used roids the changes your body goes threw, your
mood etc clearly make you aware you aint takin
just juice or proteins. Get real folks, most of our
black athletes hype in some way with performance
enhancing drugs. Its illegal and they know this.
So it is difficult for Bonds to get my sympathy ,cause
he did it anyway. Also, his record is admirable...but
if he was roiding ,does he deserve it...come on folks
get real...what message is being sent to other promising
athletes,youth etc...roid and you'll break records?
Bonds get no sympathy and yall know it period.

Tone Def

Bonds is a cheater, plain and simple. All the evidence you need is right before your eyes. Look at pics of him before 1999, and after 1999, and compare. He was ignored in 1998 (despite a great season) because all the attention was paid to those other steroid cheats, Mark MacGuire and Sammy Sosa. He took steroids, HGH, clomid, and God knows what else, to propel him to the forefront once again. Those who make this a race issue are simply following the knee-jerk, outdated, enabling, there's a Klansman under everyone's bed script. Stop making excuses for Barry's informed decision to cheat.

David

I'm still wondering why no one in the press is looking at the Honorable Gov. Arnold Schwartzeneggar to investigate whether contestants in the Arnold Classic bodybuilding contest are using steriods.
Whether BB used steriods or not, his biggest crime is owning both home run records.
Many people are both attracted to, and frightened by, Powerful Black Men.

MIA

WITCH HUNT!!!

J

He is NOT a powerful black man.

He's a roided donkey.

If he's a powerful black man then I guess Lil Kim and Oprah are peers.

KB

He is SO not a powerful black man. His message to Black youth is: lie, cheat, and if you get caught, act ignorant. Great message.

To "lol wade," the point about performance-enhancing drugs is...THEY'RE BANNED! The issue is not whether you think they are ok to use or not, because the rules of the game, the league, and surely the contract he signed state that you cannot use them. Comparing their effects to vitamins is outrageous.

LaFontaye

The business is all about that last pic to the right, to the right! And for that Mr. Bonds, all is forgiven........... That is all.

loi wade

KB, My point is not that it is o.k. to do anything illegal but rather, WHY are they illegal. And I am not defending his lying. My question was simply what would you do in the same situation? He saw this athletic empire he built crashing around him and he ran. I am personally no fan of this extremely arrogant man. I was just being objective and giving another point of view. As far as their effects, it's HIS BODY. I certainly don't care.

CLee

Punish that uppity Negro!!! Punish all the uppity Negroes! That is what it looks like to me. I can't say they (Bonds, OJ, Vick) aren't guilty but the justice system seems rabid for their convictions and PUNISHMENT.
