Revealing Oprah's "Secret"

Kenneth Winfrey Reports
By now you may have heard about the movie "The Secret," which made a big slash on The Oprah Winfrey Show recently. "The Secret" tells us that we can control our lives through something called the “Law of Attraction." It also tells us that we must show gratitude for everything that we have and experience before we can even begin to take control of our lives using this “Law.” I can think of no better way to state what I have believed for a long time.
The film reveals how we create our reality with our thoughts. Obviously, the thoughts we have determine the choices we make. And the choices we make determine the experiences we have. But I don’t know if we really realize how thinking and acting with intention can be extremely powerful in “attracting” the things that come into our lives—good or bad. You see, I believe that once you choose (and act in integrity), the universe conspires to meet you half-way. It’s my faith and my belief in the divine. It is what I call the “matching benefits plan” of the universe.
When the negative experiences you have are the only forces that dominate your thoughts, a vicious cycle can begin. If you bear resentments, grievances, and unresolved issues, your mind won’t be free to see the opportunities to make the choices that improve your circumstances. So actually the only “secret” is the one that is in your heart.
The Power of Choice
When we decide that being gay or black is only a barrier in our lives, we begin to make the choices that will affirm that. We see only the hateful people like Tim Hardaway. We only see the white women who cross the street when they see us coming. We only think of the better job as something unattainable because we are black or gay. We only see the men who would rather date white men. In other words, we only see the doors that close and never see the ones that open.
That doesn’t mean that these things aren’t real or that they don’t happen, but when I saw "The Secret," I began to wonder why such events seemed to dominate my perception of my life. It was already clear to me that the world couldn’t just be made of hateful people who disagree with my politics. It was also clear to me that I didn’t have to be bound to a negative reality simply because of my race, sexual orientation, or class of birth.
Let me also say that "The Secret" isn’t intended to suggest that you should now punish yourself for everything that has gone wrong in your life. You didn't know how the "Law of Attraction" worked. You just lived your life the way everyone else around you did.
Black people, in particular, are sorely prepared for this kind of empowerment because as slaves we were acculturated away from self-determination (this is why I love kujichagulia in Kwaanza). As gay people, we can end up being totally alienated and consumed simply by the fact that we are gay. Being both black and gay, many of us really just function on instinct (auto-pilot) to survive. We are reacting to what is happening to us rather than choosing what we want to happen.
The power of something like the "Law of Attraction" represents a new and incredible amount of responsibility for some of us. For me, it was easier to say that a man ruined my life than it was to "own" that I endured too much of his dysfunction before I got ruined. It was easier to say that I got fired because I was black than it was to realize that I was fired because of the attitude I developed when I thought that everyone at work was out to get me. It was easier for me to blame the tobacco companies for making the cigarette more addictive when it was ultimately my choice to keep right on smoking. I quit smoking two years ago and now teach LGBT-specific smoking cessation classes, but the negativity that I chose for myself in other areas is still sometimes a struggle.
The Power of Gratitude
I used to say that a man "gave me" HIV in a selfish, deceitful act before I could admit that my desperation for love made me unable to see the unnecessary risks that I took. It’s hard not to punish myself for having been a little gullible. I contracted HIV nearly 15 years after the epidemic began. We knew it existed. Unfortunately, so many of us simply thought that it didn’t exist because nobody talked about it out loud.
That’s all really irrelevant now anyway. I refuse to get stuck in the question of “why,” and I have learned to be thankful for having HIV. Don't get me wrong. It wasn’t cute when I got down to one t-cell (normal is around 600), and a few hours just watching TV seemed like a really long day. On the other hand, I have had the opportunity to learn some things that most 34 year-olds don't get to learn. I can now be grateful for this opportunity to grow and adapt.
I'm not advocating running out and catching a deadly disease in order to obtain wisdom. If you're reading this, you already have the life experience to appreciate it in the same way. You have your story just like I do. Everyone has a story. You just have to learn to appreciate yours.
Here’s a part of my story: At 34, I have already learned to cope with retirement (and at 30, that means something most of us can’t even imagine…), mortality, morbidity, rejection, health insurance companies, insensitive medical professionals, HIV drug side-effects and all the other bumps and bruises that the life of a gay black man has to offer. I could go on, but these aren't, in themselves, learning experiences.
The learning came when I found my way to feeling whole, perfect and complete again in the midst of it. When I learned that I could shake the crud of those experiences off to form a mound beneath my feet, each trauma was then "added" unto me."
Watching my body heal was (and still is) as inspiring as reading about Moses parting the Red Sea. Believe me, I can truly say "Thank you!" because there are few people in this world who appreciate the miracle of life the way I do when the wind is blowing on my face as I roller-blade and when I'm hiking at 7000 feet in the New Mexico wilderness, or the gratitude I feel when I work out with my heart racing at 170 bpm (on the dance floor or in the gym).
I can cherish what it was like to be forced to stay at home--too sick to be a good employee, and then learn (by little more than instincts) to create a small business that would support me at home. In the appreciation for my health and success, I want them more. I visualize them more. Therefore, I see and choose them more.
I can be thankful for the men that haven’t returned my love because I can give all that love to myself. I can even be thankful for the men that really hurt me because they taught me to value myself. For the same reason, we can be thankful for the men that enslaved our forefathers (and mothers) because, who we are, as gay black men, represents the strongest of humanity.
Of course, life is better without these traumas. So, I'm not sending out thank you notes or throwing parties for the people that wounded me (or us); I am just celebrating the wisdom I (or we) gain in order to overcome those wounds. I'm not thanking them, I am just thankful for what I (or we) should now know because of them.
The Power Itself
Those that came before us were the ones who survived long enough to bring us here. They were the cream of the crop. There is no doubt that every African American came from a strong lot. Our ancestors likely walked a thousand miles to get on a ship that subsequently carried them for weeks (or months) in its dark, wet, dank, ribbed belly like cargo. Those that survived the journey arrived to survive hundreds of years through more brutal oppression. Then, pioneers like Bayard Rustin, Langston Hughes, Keith Boykin, Jasmyne Cannick Peter Gomes, and even RuPaul, like many others, were brave enough to stand out so that we could be affirmed as black homosexuals.
Therefore, I believe that we can be conscious of this rich and fascinating heritage without bearing the weight of it on our shoulders. I will put it in my tank; let it fuel my engine. I will shake off the crud that civilization has heaped upon us and proudly stand on top of it like a throne.
I will stop looking for why I “can’t” or “don’t.” I don’t ask why I deserve what I want. I ask “why not?” Other people can find prosperity and happiness. Why not me? Why not you? You and I are royalty. Being the offspring of such strong people, you and I must know that we are made for more than grief. Cry no more. Hurt no more. We are made for joy! Choose it today.

Kenneth,
You have written many encouraging posts on this site. However, I feel that this is your best yet. I needed to hear it. Thank you so much. I have to go see the movie.

Great that you are getting some positive ideas that are helping you and your piece was very inspiring and well written.
But...
I have to take exception to the advocacy of "The Secret". It makes no allowance for happenstance or how suffering is an integral part of our existence and puts the blame on victims with its "just think yourself to happiness" claims (it sounds eerily like "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" dogma that we hear from rich people, which might explain it's appearance on Oprah). It has been repackaged and sold to make more money (Self-Help is a huge industry) and its scientific claims are dubious at best. Also, the entire thing seems to be extreamly self-centered in that it is all about getting more rather than selfless giving.
I'm sorry to be the wet blanket, but this "Secret" frenzy is driving me nuts. You don't have to believe me or listen, but at least be extremely critical of this stuff before you buy, and go into it with your eyes open rather than because it "sounds about right"

You are so Right On, my Brother Kenneth! Thank you for your Truth & Honesty. I have been involved with "New Thought" for over ten years now, & was simply delighted to see the "Secret" on the Oprah show. The "Law Of Attraction" is always working in our lives whether we are aware or not. I believe it is better to become aware of this law, & become a co-creator of one's life, than a victim. Now that the "Secret" is Out of the Closet, so to speak, more of US can begen to truly start living the lives that we were ment to live. Much love & Light To All !!

I watched the Secret six months ago and felt that this movie was going to have a major impact on the world. We are not victims, we are creators and our thoughts, words and actions create our reality. What goes out comes in. I had hoped someone at the Oscars would have mentioned it - the other movies were entertainment, this movie is life, and potentially world, changing. I can't recommend it highly enough for anyone, black or white, gay or straight. We are all human beings and this movie helps point the way forward to a better day.

Kenneth,
I couldn't have said it better myself. My coaching clients struggle with these issues all the time, with your permission I'd like to share this piece with some of them. It would also be a great piece to submit to The Normal Heart and other print media.
Keep up the great work.

I am not a wet blanket, but I think that Brandon has an interesting point; however, isn't it wonderful to re-invent your life in your own developed image and then use that image with integrity to produce good...even if it is mostly for you. What better way to make a better world than to start with yourself. No, we are not here to get goods but to do good. But remember, there is also a universal law of "reaping and sowing". You will be the beneficiary of your good tidings and cheer. Your decision to see the miracle so that the miracle is aparent to you will produce a miraculous life full of wonderment. So, I thank you too Keith for your insights. And, keep on believing yourself into a position of power by sharing empowerment ideas with us...

I thought this was a wonderful piece written by Mr. Winfrey. Great job and keep up the god work. "The Secret isn't a bunch of junk it is basically biblical. It is bascially talking about using and applying your faith and works to your life.

I keep a quote from J.W. Goethe that are much along this same philosophy.
Here t'is
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative abd creation, there is one elementary truth. The ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance which no man could have dreamt would would have come his way.
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it now. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now."
TS is an extension of this philosophy for this generation.
Begin it now.

My personal faith has grown because of some of the challenges you have mentioned. A positive attitude helps. Gratitude for what we have is important. Service to others should not be forgotten. But the prayer that keeps things in proper perspective for me is the Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

It is a wonderful thing that Kenneth is using his personal story to place “The Secret” (The Law of Attraction) into a personal context. I believe that Attraction is a critical understanding for African Americans and more so, more so, 3 times more so for Black gay and/or SGL brothers and sisters. We are 7 years into a new century and a new millennium and it is definitely time to recognize.
Addressing cynical approaches like those of Brandon, I have to say what is the point of having the eyes open if the heart is closed. The Law of Attraction says that you will attract into your experience thoughts, people, and events that are the equals of your dominant thoughts and feelings. If you are irritated you will attract more irritants, if you think cynically, you will attract cynical experiences. The more one chooses to direct thought for the purpose of attracting desired experiences, the less power that which you have named “happenstance” will have to affect them. This lies in the heart of all great religions.

I will admit, I only seen partial segments here and there on the subject, "The Secret." However, based on what I read here and what I have seen so far when watching Oprah, I got a very uneasy feeling because I found this teaching as free-lance, wishful thinking spirituality.
I cannot understand why they couldn't say "God" but quick to say "divine" or "universe." There is no power in the universe and this free-lance wishful thinking is a new form of spiritualist witchcraft.

kenneth, your story is lovely. your perspective on THE SECRET is uplifting and motivational. you seemed to have been in a great mood at the time of writing it, and your joy moved me. seriously.
NOW, THE REAL SECRET. ready???
okay. listen up...
there is no "THE" secret, and there never has been.
oprah is either empty, gullible and needy, or she's a GANGSTA!!!
judging by the fact that she's worth NINE figures, i'm going for door number two.
i'm not saying that thinking positively isn't worthwhile and preferable to being miserable. i'm just saying this "The Secret" is a hi tech, remastered, re-packaged version of the same old magical bullshit that people keep falling for, over and over again, for centuries on end. and there's a P.T. Barnum born every minute who will sell it.
the true path to prosperity and happiness is to write a self-help book, and get oprah to sell it.

Brandon, thank you so much for the link. I now understand exactly how the universal laws of "The Secret" work. If you look at the website -- you can see how the negative response to the idea has immediately attracted other people with a negative response and that negative energy created therein has become its own little force of energy that is easy to see looking from the outside and unfortunately also very powerful.
The Secret is not a new idea -- its really not much more than the idea that "what goes around - comes around" -- and you can even find that concept in the bible. Are the motives of the people packaging that idea into a best-selling dvd and book called "The Secret" questionable - perhaps. However, the idea that this law of attraction is a powerful force in shaping our lives is not. Once you understand the concept you can see it unfold in many ways all around you, every day.

"I can even be thankful for the men that really hurt me because they taught me to value myself."
That's the line that got to me - as if men who treat you well can't teach you the same thing. So when your momma beat your ass, was she teaching you to value youself? Nothing lowers the esteem like abuse. Abuse does not deliver the lesson of self love, if anything, it prevents or DELAYS THE LESSON.
Sometimes people hear a sentence or catch phrase with just the right cadence and wording - and it gets to them - it gets real good to them like an "old negro spiritual" - they start repeating it without truly examining what they are saying.
This same book suggests that you can lose weight by no longer thinking of food a factor in weight gain.
Critical thinking is still an option.

We know there will always be people who'll find something wrong with what another person finds valuable or who will feel antagonized by something that is
inspirational to other people. Sometimes these folks aren't as "critical minded" as they are spiritually erroded and just plain cyncial.
I feel that if something is of great value/truth then it allows you to work with it on a deeper level and so you define the 5W's/1H of such experience(s)for yourself and you are able because of the weight of the truth, to allow it to penetrate and then you can
set it to the tune of your own reality as it seems that Winfrey has done in this post.
Great read!

Wow, I didn't know I was being cynical, you have opened my little eyes to the truth! I have seen the light and it is The Secret.
Let me know if this will still be what we all believe 5 years from now after it gets old.
Just so you know, this is not Karma, this is unfounded magical thinking. If you want some good information about Karma, compassion, and learning to live life in the moment there are excellent books by Pima Chodron, The Dali Lama, and Tich Nhat Hahn. At least they are not in it for the money.

Paige and Brandon, my post truly wasn't about you personally or I would have listed your names but apparently you felt some attack was due you and that may explain the rebuttles that collected beneath my post.
Brandon, I still stand by what I said: Sometimes people who appear to be so concerned with "critical mindedness" really are just cynical and wanting to burst the perverbial bubble but note again that I didnt say that you were that person now did I?
All I can tell you two is that not everybody has to agree with our perceptions of that book or anything else for that matter, you can't know with any certainty, the value another person is capable of deriving from that material any more than you can know everyone's subjective realities.
Good luck in your mission.

Liquid Fonts, in all honestly, your definition of cynism suits me fine. I'd prefer being cynical to being DELUSIONAL anyday. The same delusion that won't allow you to admit to whom you are addressing your posts, may also be fueling your endorsement of "Oprah's Secret".
I'll say this much about Winfrey - ESPECIALLY TO GAY BLACK MEN who may be her most disposable demographic:
Oprah is a paradoxical phenomenon. For every good deed she did post Katrina, we must remember the role she played in helping the current administration to take over in the first place. She 'bout a dollar at the end of the day. Trust. That's not always a bad thing but in her case it damn sure ain't always a good one.
Continue to watch Winfrey - listen to her - BUT WITH THE UTMOST CARE....and before you kneejerkingly repeat her doctrine, REFLECT and make sure that it's your thought you're thinking.

Paige,(and this is my last comment to you)...I have not endorsed that book, read that book or even seen that book beyond this site, I only read Kenneth's post and the reader comments per usual. The way you are carrying on about Oprah this and Oprah that makes it sounds like you yourself at one point became a worshiper of a certain someone you saw on television and now that your face has been cracked against the wall of reality, you now wish to warn the masses of black gay folks before the next "HYPE" occurs as if we were so gullible but I prefer to give the average black gay/sgl person a bit more credit in the intelligence department by assuming they are not so emotionally or intellectually challenged as to need a warning sticker pasted across every piece of media that does the thinking for us... we can figure out what's not for us generally on our own thank you.

Reading the Salon.com article along with others, I notice that a large component of them are about Anti-Oprah sentiments. I am reminded that in this culture that tearing down the admired is regular sport. In addition, tearing down Oprah is fever in the ultra-white world of publishing where they HATE the fact that her endorsement can mean success for their pet projects. There are those who find this black woman from the mud of Mississippi unfit to hold a power that could affect their livelihood, or leave them beholding to her. There is much frustration at Oprah’s deftness at escaping every trap they attempt to lay for her. Black Bitch! How dare she! I can imagine them up nights, looking for ways to attack her generosity, spirituality, popularity, etc. Thanks to the broadness of these arguments, the sweeping generalizations and oversimplifications, I am left unpersuaded.

THIS IS WHAT WE KNOW. achieving success is a matter of...
setting goals, planning, hard work, random chance, self-sacrifice, a positive attitude, some impatience, and a dose of mentoring or good advise. ONE of these factors is not THE secret. it's usually a combo.
when someone tries to foreground any ONE of these factors as THE secret, it simplifies things to a magical degree. when people tell you they made it on their own, they're usually telling you that they've forgotten the people who helped them, etc....
if only wishing and believing made it so, every child in the world would be a candy-eating, spontaneous firestarter with an endless supply of toys.
of course oprah doesn't believe in luck. she'd have to admit that were it not for a phone call from KING WORLD and another from stephen spielberg, she'd be a talk show host doing aspirin commercials like rolonda watts.
Buddha Gaydah-Apollo
March 7 2007, 6:09PM
What I know is no person who has contributed to this posting can say for sure why King World and Spielberg called Oprah rather than Rolanda Watts. Well actually, we do know that Roger Ebert encouraged King World, and Quincy Jones pushed Spielberg. I don't know what relationship Rolanda had with these men. Anyway, goals focus attention, hard work focuses attention, self-sacrifice focuses attention, mentoring focuses attention, etc. Focusing attention is at the root of Attraction. The fragmenting nature of our culture entices us to break the process down into parts and regard them as somehow different.

i stand corrected. all answers are now synthesized to one. THE secret has been revealed...to everything.
oprah's not even a little bit lucky, since there's no luck at all -- good or bad; there's just iron will and determination or not. if you were born yesterday in wartorn bagdad, you just weren't focusing hard enough, you lazy little sperm. the people in darfur just aren't focused enough. random chance plays no part in our lives. ms. byrne thought her way to 114 pounds without having to consume anywhere near 1710 calories a day. the preacher must be living his life right, 'cause he's got a great big cadillac.
those who dare question are shouted down and called spiritually corroded, haters, infidels. (which henceforth i will wear like a badge of honor).
it's the old story, dressed in 2007 drag. FOR NOW, i'm gonna go FOCUS MY ATTENTION on other things.
enjoy the new kool aid, gang. it feels good. AND it's been endorsed in the latest issue of "O" Magazine, Gur.

I am persuaded that harsh 100% this or 100% that thinking hardens the personality and creates tension in the place of dialogue. I am regarding with curiosity, the thinking of those who poo-poo attraction at the same time they subscribe to a mystically-based, highly subjective concepts like luck, sometimes called chance, or happenstance or strawberry if that flavor is pleasing.
Aren't concepts like Karma, where one reaps the consequences of the causes sewn, and Attraction where one's thoughts act as causes, attract results in the guise of effects, like loving cousins in their support one of the other? Can brothers do the same? I am persuaded.

You know, I am glad they made little or no references to "God" I am not an athiest, but religion has become such a debatable issue with so many people forcing their own interpretation on others and there are so many mean christians that The Secret gives us a chance to look at OUR higher selves. that is something that NOBODY can interpret EXCEPT you. I like that concept. I thought the packaging of the DVD was ingenious. I've watched it over 20 times and I love it. It gives me another view of something greater than myself besides or even including God. The best part, it's MY choice.

I really enjoy all of the positive vibe that Keith has posted regarding the secret. But as I read a few days ago, Della Reese stated that the secret has been around a long time.
There's an ole saying, that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. There were many "books/movies" that carried the same message as the secret, but you were probably not ready to move out of your comfort zone to receive them.....but now, the same thing that was presented to you maybe 10 years ago is now appearing in different form, you accept it now because you are ready.
Ten years from now there will be another "secret" for those who are not ready to receive it now.

C. BAPTISTE-WILLIAMS!
THANK YOU! THE BIBLE HAS BEEN SAYING ALL OF THESE THINGS FOR YEARS. CHURCHES, PREACHERS AND TEACHERS IN METAPHYSICISM, CHRISTIANITY AND MANY WORLD RELIGIONS HAVE BEEN SAYING THESE WORDS FROM THE BEGINNING!
THE SECRET IS JUST "THE BIBLE, LITE" WITHOUT HAVING TO DO THE WORK OF SEEKING AND SEARCHING AND STUDYING TO SHOW YOURSELF APPROVED. I LOVE ITS TEACHINGS AND REALLY PRAY THAT IT BRINGS PEOPLE TO THE WORD AND TO THE TRUTH AND LEAVES AND IMPRESSION TO ASPIRE TO AND FOR MORE!
BLESS IT,
REV. KEV!

Kenneth, (and all the rest), it's great to know that finally, many of you have NOW caught up with the law-of-attraction and, how we create our reality. This is something I've mentioned a loonnnnnnng time ago on this site yet my comments weren't taken as anyting serious.
So, since you're ready to heal yourself or feel that having hiv is something you've 'attracted' by thought, are you ready to really accept the responsibility that you can alter your hold concept of what you thought you had as a negative thing, and see it, as something that has a positive outcome.
Here's something you (and others) and listen to, (because I feel this too will become common knowledge once the main media -- which many of you trust first --- will one day broadcast and, change how we once thought ahout hiv.)
I personally like Keidi Obi Awadu (of Libradio) interview Mar 01, 2007 with Stephen Davis:

and keep in mind that you've attracted this too, or I to this topic.

The Secret is evil, as is the bible.
Both books are marketed to weak-willed, needy losers who need a third party selling useless tonics to find meaning in their lives.
It's disgusting that otherwise intelligent people believe this crap.

"Then, pioneers like Bayard Rustin, Langston Hughes, Keith Boykin, Jasmyne Cannick Peter Gomes, and even RuPaul, like many others, were brave enough to stand out so that we could be affirmed as black homosexuals..."
AMAZING BROTHA! :)
Thank you Kenneth and Keith for this article. I haven't had the opportunity to sit myself still to view/read the SECRET...but I think I will make an effort to. :)

Your words are beautiful and inspiring. I will make it a point to see the movie, but I will make it a bigger point to dig deeper and expand my circle of influence.

I find this whole thing about "The Secret" interesting. It sounds like Buddhism. "With our thoughts, we create the world," Buddha once said.

Debut Novel: Heaven's Remorse by James Corey
Seven lives, seven deaths. Seven martyrs he will be. For the first quarter century of breaths in the seventh incarnation, he will know nothing of his true calling. He will be led to slay his enemies with valor, tempted to bleed them with hidden malice. The past must be brought to the present, the future set in diamond for the Harlem Aries and the Bronx Pisces . . . oil and vinegar, opposites. Lovers. Enemies. "Abomination." To Vatican, the novice mutant sorcerer, it seems that God could care less about the state of the world around him. He who has been known as "walking sin" defends those who would kill for a chance to see the super-powered blood spill from his veins, along with the rest of his clandestine saviors, while being thrown into a number of disastrous situations against his free will. Love thy enemy, indeed.
