Say Goodbye To The Down Low

By Keith Boykin, in sexuality

Two years ago I complained about an upcoming Bill Duke movie that I feared would further demonize black men on the down low. I was particularly concerned about an incorrect statistic in his movie trailer that claimed that "70% of these women have contracted HIV or are dying from AIDS." I sent an email to Bill Duke and we argued about his statistics, but I haven't paid attention to the film project since then. I had almost forgotten about the movie until I read a story this week that Vivica A. Fox, Mya, Loretta Devine, Patti LaBelle, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Louis Gossett Jr., and Clifton Powell are all rumored to be involved with the film.

About the same time this week I read a news story about new research that helps to debunk the down low myth. A new report published this week in the Annals of Epidemiology challenges the popular media assumption that black men on the down low are causing an increase in HIV rates among black women. The DL lifestyle came to light after the media began to report on books written by down low men, according to the article's lead author, Chandra Ford of Columbia University. "Part of what has happened as a result of that initial burst of stories ... is that those stories often tied the down low to high rates of HIV infection among African-American women, which was not supported by epidemiological data," Ford said.

Six Years Later

I've been writing about the down low hype for 5 years now. The good news is that a lot of people have gotten the message. The bad news is that too many others have not. So here we are in 2007, six years after the down low story first surfaced, and there's still not a shred of evidence to prove this myth, but some of us are still talking about it as though it's the most serious threat to black America. It's not.

According to the new research, men of all races and ethnic groups secretly have sex with both women and other men. We didn't need a Columbia University study to tell us that, but it's good to have scientific data to back up your arguments. The researchers reviewed lay and public health literature from 1998 to 2004 about the down low to draw their conclusions.

The authors of the report found that black men and women have higher HIV rates than other races, though they report fewer riskier behaviors. That's a fact that never gets discussed in the media. Many of the reporters have assumed that black men on the down low are engaged in wild and unsafe sex, but the evidence over the years has consistently challenged that assumption. In fact, the assumption never made sense. If you're on the down low and don't want to be detected, it's more likely that you would be cautious instead of risky.

Dr. Ford warned that increased attention on the down low could cause men who secretly have sex with other men to further disguise their lifestyle and become less likely to seek medical treatment. In addition, the focus on the DL also shifts the discussion away from concrete measures to prevent HIV, such as routine testing, Ford said. She suggested that researchers examine other approaches to explain the higher rates of HIV among blacks.

The report also found:

  • The lifestyle referenced by the term the DL is neither new nor limited to blacks, and sufficient data linking it to HIV/AIDS disparities currently are lacking.
  • Common perceptions about the DL reflect social constructions of black sexuality as generally excessive, deviant, diseased, and predatory.
  • Research targeting black sexual behavior that ignores these constructions may unwittingly reinforce them.

Under Cover In Philadelphia

Meanwhile, back in Philadelphia, production is underway for Bill Duke's new movie, now titled Cover. It’s described as a murder mystery that focuses on the story of a man on the down low. Duke himself has characterized the down low recently as "men who are in committed relationships having unprotected sex with other men unbeknownst to their wives and girlfriends." I wouldn't use that definition. The down low is not just about men who are cheating on their wives and girlfriends. It's about people who engage in same-sex behavior but do not identify as gay or bisexual. In the old days, before the media hype, we used to call that "the closet."

I don't know where this movie is headed, but I do hope that Bill Duke has read the new research out there. I do hope that the film won't become another vehicle to demonize black gay and bisexual men. I do hope there won't be any more misinformation and inaccurate statistics thrown out there for public consumption. And most importantly, I hope that black people finally start to wake up and realize that the down low is not the cause of all our problems.

The report is called Black Sexuality, Social Construction, and Research Targeting ‘The Down Low’ (‘The DL’), Chandra L. Ford, PhD, MPH, MLIS, Kathryn D. Whetten, PhD, MPH, Susan A. Hall, PhD, MS, Jay S. Kaufman, PhD, Angela D. Thrasher, MPH, PhD.

Looks like we have to undertake another campaign to educate the uneducated.

Tell us where to write the letters.

C. Baptiste-Williams

I can't believe that those stars would take part of a project that is socially irresponsible and delivering mistruths. Especially Sheryl Lee Ralph in all the work she has been doing lately around HIV/AIDS.

geobaby

I agree with you Keith that our focus should be on prevention. Again HIV/AIDS is not a gay disease. Its effecting us globally and we most address the issues surrounding this disease as such. I will also agree with the above comments, but I'm quick to realize that these black actors don't know our lifestyle. Their participation is totally out of ignorance of a story told through one person's experience. It was kind of like "Noah's Arc"; although I appreciated the presence of a gay African-American melodrama series, it wasn't anything close to my experience. Unless Vivca, Sheryl, Clifton and others have had homosexual experiences they simply wouldn't know.
I also realize that the statics above will go unnoticed simply because they down play "fear" factors typically used to demonize black male sexuality.

Gary

• Why are the HIV rates disproportionately higher for black men who have sex with men (MSM) than for other MSM? There are a lot of foolish reasons given including the DL phenomenon. Although unprotected anal intercourse and multiple sexual partners are longstanding sexual risk factors associated with HIV infection, there is no good evidence that black MSM are any more likely than other MSM to engage in these behaviors. One hypothesis that has a lot of support is that black MSM are less likely to seek treatment for other sexually transmitted diseases than are MSM in general. Untreated STDs like syphilis, gonorrhea, and HPV facilitate the acquisition and transmission of HIV. However we spin our image to the world, it is important to be truthful to ourselves. For our health, we need to seek out gay doctors that we can be open about all our health concerns without shame. Most importantly, wear condoms when having anal sex.

Nutcase

Keith, I'd have to disagree with your definition of the down low. Doesn't anyone remember the TLC song "Creep" or R. Kelly's "Down Low?" ANYONE can be on the DL regardless of their sexuality; one simply doesn't want their cheating to come to light. I'm surprised you weren't the first to point that out & continue to say it. Guess I'll wait for your next appearance on Paula Zahn (hope I spelled her name right).

Chances are I may not see this movie. Bill Duke's an idiot, judging by his remarks on that BET drivel.

Nathan James

We aren't all that far from Beyond The Down Low, yet people still don't recognize society's role in creating the "DL" and perpetuating it. As has been said many times before, society's attitudes towards gays make the "DL" a necessity for some, not the other way around. I will wait and see if Duke's treatment of the "DL" is open-minded and sober, or if it will be just another vilification of a complex and painful social issue.

Mitch

We all know the DL exists. I am no way offended by this project. The movie will showcase certain men who get into committed relationships with woman fully knowing their situation. I have met several woman that have been infected by these men. If the number is only 100 that is 100 too many. Do I think this will impact men who live their lives with respect, honesty and dignity? No. But, if someone is bothered by this film you need to ask yourself why?

Nathan James

Mitch, if the film demonizes the "DL", instead of addressing the larger issue of how the "DL" comes to be, then I will be "bothered" by it. If we lived, as Keith and many others have pointed out, in a more enlightened, accepting society, there'd be no "DL" at all.

As for women being infected with HIV by their male "DL" partners, that holds true only if you can unequivocally show that these women weren't:

Infected prior to their relationship with a "DL" man,

Infected through their own intimacy with someone other than their current "DL" partner,

Or that these women didn't get infected through their work (like being a nurse) or through medical error.

It's true that some "DL"men infect their femalew lovers. But it's also true that if there were no (perceived) need for men to be on the "DL" these women wouldn't be sick...

Mitch ll

Our community needs a major meeting about sex and sexuality; a Tavis Smiley state of the union in black america on health and sex! We should hash out everything related to homosexuality, hateful speech, self hate, self love, oppression, anger, etc.
I hope Bill Dukes isn't trying to make a dollar at the expense of the black gay community.
Gun, black on black homicide and violence, and post traumatic stress are areas we must address.

How do we face our future?

Kenneth Winfrey[TypeKey Profile Page]

@ Mitch: The movie and the theory of the DL as a epidemilogical construct bother me BECUASE it demonizes black and/or gay men and it doesn't ask the pertinent questions. Such as:

Why are so many of these women having sex unprotected sex?

Why are the men in their lives with women if they want to be with men?

What is the threshold that establishes her victimhood? (i.e.) Is she certain that she is the only woman in his life?

To further that question, has she established that she is his only sexual partner?

Since we know that both men and women can transmit HIV, Where are the stories about the women who give HIV to men?

How did she know that he knew he had HIV when she began to have unprotected sex with him? What did she do to find out? Did they get tested together?

If I never hear another sad story about a woman who "caught" HIV from a man, it'll be too soon. I have HIV, and I understand how my actions led to my infection. I am not a victim, and niether are these women!

Regan DuCasse

It's easy to blame black gay men for the higher infection rates among black women...when all around us the evidence of unprotected sex among black women (unmarried in particular)is clear. Out of wedlock births and HIV+ babies, and multiple partners.
Africa is HIV/AIDS central because of the sexual irresponsibility of MALES and the sexual repression of females.
It's the culture of recreational sex without protection that fuels the plague, gay or straight.
But gay males are NOT JUST INTO straight women, no matter how much straight women wish they were, or try to blame gay men for their infections. They got the Plague from the straight men they have unprotected sex with and their babies by.

Nyah Molineaux

I am a public health student and the article referred to by Keith is an interesting one. The study test and refute 12 reasons people think Black MSM men have HIV more than the other male populations.

After reading the study I feel that stereotypes surrounding Black MSM and HIV should be addressed. Furthermore, I think it is important that we remember a lot of the reasons why people think Black MSM are more prone to AIDS is just old fashioned racism.

For example, I read in a book White Over Black, black men and the fascination over their penal size has been here since slavery. Furthermore, the idea of Black people are more primiscous have been here since slavery.

Doug Cooper-Spencer

The fact that Bill Duke has 'extended' the definition of downlow to include the term 'unprotected sex' shows just much of an idiot he is. Or is he? Is he simply trying to cash in on the fervor?
Keith, I think you should, in someway, ensure this article personally reaches the other producers of the project (sorry Miss Patti and Sheryl Lee, but I think your good intentions might be a bit misguided), to alert them of their error, that they should at least hold off on this type of mess until we get all the facts. Also, this article should reprinted in the mainstream media (op-ed pieces in Time/Essence, for instance).
Once again, you've done an outstanding job of bringing even more information to this hot topic.

chicagoangel

I do not know what the DL means no more nor do I care. I got kicked off a message board because the "dl" guys didnt like me. They said "gay men are in the closet" but a true dl man is a guy who has a girlfriend or wife and chooses to sleep with another man, hence they don't want no one to know so they are dl.

I say to hell with it. Im just going to live life the best way I can and not worry about people and their sterotypes

Charles

Wait a minute here Keith you praise the DL Chronicles...how come this DL story is better...is it because the creators are gay...if this movie by Bill Duke gets people talking about black people of all sexualities having unprotected sex then I am for it.

Keith do not be so eager to put out a fire because a fire is the best thing for new growth to sprout.

BTW: what's the real reason for Noah's Arc cancellation, a little birdie told me...contract talks broke down because Mr. Polk wanted more control, more money and wanted the actors to not talk about their sexualities in the media...hey that's what I heard.

jazzi

I think the movie will be worth checking out. Hopefully it will start people to talking openly & honestly about HIV/AIDS & sexuality. We are being hit by HIV/AIDS harder than any other group(or is that a myth too?!). It's way pass time that we start to talk about whats happening & if this movie can be a catalysts for that, great! Feelings will be hurt, toes will be stepped on, & everyone won't always get it right but who does? I don't want Black men, gay or straight, to be demonized & blamed for spreading HIV/AIDS because that isn't true. What is true is that there is a very high infection rate in our community & we need to find out, inspite of all the info out there about AIDS, why that is.

Bayard Baldwin

I think gossip deejay Wendy Williams and Oprah Winfrey will be disappointed with these facts. They helped fan the flames of the DL phenomena.

Courtney Baker-Oliver

What's with the moratorium on any further discussion of the 'down low'? As an artist/educator, I believe that new research on almost any topic is good. More useable information emerging as a result is even better. If you disagree with the work others are creating on a topic, craft an alternative that articulates your perspective! As the producer/director of THE TRUTH (About the Down Low), the musical that's revolutionizing the 'down low' debate by humanizing the 'dl' character and stating emphatically that HOMOPHOBIA is at the root of the 'dl' phenomenon, we're changing the discussion from 'dl' man as creator of a pandemic to 'dl' man as himself a victim- of Black homophobia. Let's face it- as long as there are Tim Hardaways spewing messages of hate for gays, the 'dl' will continue to define us, divide us, and detract attention from more pressing issues in our community. It's this moment where THE TRUTH about black homophobia should be addressed-with courage-in the face of ignorance, not silence.

LaMar

This whole D/L issue is as stale as two week old bread. Black men are not the only ones who creep, go online and most of the men who hit on you will be white married men more than anyone else, its just that black men, gay or straight are easily demonized in the press, and media as sexual deviants, and just where are these black men creeping, I've never met any of them. In this day and age, its as simple as rain, use a condom black women and men, that old line, is still in effect, when you sleep with one person, you sleep with every one they have that I learned years ago at a HIV class.

As for Miss Patti, lost all respect for her when I heard she is a "fan" of Shirley Liquor, so, her lack of a clue is not that much of a surprise. Miss Ralph being involved is odd, since she should know the facts better. But, its great to have advocates like Keith keeping it real, even though most just don't want to deal with the truth.

Peace out.

great column keith!

there are those black gaybashers who are so blinded by hatred that they will never see us or any truths about us

and there are millions more women infected by het whores than gay ones

i agree with all u have penned
but
i actually admire bill duke
for exposing the blatant lies and hatred of gays by most black hets and being man enough to put his own name and the names of his friends on the venom he spews...

Gee, I guess white guys like former NJ Governor McGreevey, Arianna Huffington's ex and Jann Wenner, the publisher of Rolling Stone magazine were just "finding themselves" when they were fucking other men behind their wives' backs.

ToddyEnglish

To me this is a dangerous slippery slope. On onehand the film concept in and of itself is encouraging. Atleast we are no longer keeping homosexuality in the black community a "dirty little secret." If anything this film may encourage discourse.

However, my optimism stops there. This will be nothing more than an excuse for angry sistahs to demonize brothas, period. We all know that is exactly what will happen. The gay community is already demonized and this will only exacerbate it where we(blacks)are concerned.
I can just see the town hall meetings now..."Well, I am sick and tired of our brothas killing us!" and etc, etc, etc. I am not trying to categorize all black women as being vindictive victims but this will, potentially, be the most explosive film of the year. They will be talking about this more than Brokeback Mountain I guarangoddamntee it. And it will be at the expense of black gay men whether we are closeted or not.

Hopefully, Bill Duke will be sensible and objective.

manchild1

Wow,
While I do not applaud Bill Dukes effort,I am sorry but
the message needs to be sent. Since black folk do not
talk about men who creep with men openly or honestly.
A couple years ago ,my younger sister brought her
intended to our family cookout. Needless to say,not only
I had slept with him,but so did some of my female
cousins...non of us is HIV positive. But that day served
as a wake up call for myself and the others. Men creep
period...and woman need to know this...afterall,..dont
we all have sisters, aunts, nieces and grandmothers who
need to know....

Unfortunately, there are not that many hets who acknowledge a difference between gay men, bi men, and DL men. The DL is part of a distinct identity that is not limited to black men. The only difference is that we get a slang term that implies that the behavior is limited to black men. Somehow, black men are now the only ones who do it. (We are not, of course. But frankly, HIV/AIDS stats have made it seem like more of a public health issue for us.)

I admit that I am interested in watching works that deal with the DL. There needs to be discussion around Black MSM behavior & identity. But I also agree that, unfortunately, these works may act as an accelerant for "discussions" about the evil black man and the even worse black gay man. Our voices can be drowned out or ignored while the "truth" is being constructed. Bill Dukes ignoring the fact that his statistics are not supported by any form of research that I am aware of is socially irresponsible, to say the least.

monhol

i have read some of keith's book. i put it down when i saw how he tried to blame black women for HIV.i live in a small town where AIDS is a big part of the population. the town is also filled with drugs. sex and drugs go together and so does HIV and AIDS. everytime a black man does something negative a black woman is blamed for it. this has been going on for years. the DL is real where i live. i also have gay friends and a gay brother who lets me know what is going on. you would be shocked to learn about all the so-called straight men who have and is seeing my friends on a sexual basis. my brother has given me the run down. drug addiction in which some men hide from a partner if he or she is a good decent person who is not addicted. if the partner is an addict a man has no problem letting it be known. there are men and women in my town who are "tricking" for drugs. the DL is real.lets stop blaming women for what a sorry man does.blame the victimizer not the victim.

Luther

I do feel bad about the scourge of HIV/AIDS in your town, and its bad in may towns. But, while drugs are a part of the problem, its also a lack of self esteem. if, I could have one wish come true, it would be that black women and all women and men for that matter would just say NO to any man who wants to have sex without a condom. A condom, its that easy, and yet, the spread of this disease keeps running wild in the black community. I grew up in a small town, and the resident gay guys were getting it on with everybody but other gay men, so, sex is wicked, and a person has to protect themselves first and foremost.

Luther

My bad, didn't mean to put the word "wicked" in that in 2007 sex is scary, and you have to protect yourself while getting your freak on.

curious887

I think this movie might be a positive as long as it is not one-sided. Unfortuantely, movies like this can be all about blaming the black gay man. And we are demonfied enough. At the end of the day, that is what bothers me most about this movie. It is hard enough on us visible gay guys as it is. At the same time, I know bruthas creep and I have two sisters and there would be no words to express how I would feel if one caught HIV from one of these guys. Yes; yes; bruthas are not the only ones who creep and all women with HIV did not get it from a DL brutha, but it happens. I hope that Keith's message sends a message to B. Duke that his movie should be balanced. The black community's rampant homophobia is just as much to blame for the state of things as are the DL men, themselves, who through ignorance, fear or image w/o protection sleep with and infect our sisters. Both should be brought to light and both need to stop.

Mitch II

We are afraid to address how all the dope and guns get dumped in our neighborhoods; terrorism to the first degree!

Jay

I think this movie is going to make straight people feel even more justified in being homophobic. The sad thing about this...it may be based on false statistics. As someone said earlier, there wouldn't be a need for "DL" if people would just accept people for who they are. Last, I am angry that the media and hollywood always portrays black men on the DL as the only ones that do this. oh wait...the guys in Brokeback Mountain were on the DL even though no one called it that.

Eric

This Trailer made me physically ill.... It never stops!!! The African American Male ... be he gay,straight,Bisexual.. Is forever portrayed as this EVIL creature..

what...what...what

"If you're on the down low and don't want to be detected, it's more likely that you would be cautious instead of risky."

I have met few DL men who practice safe sex. In fact they are prone to thinking they are immune to any STD. The motto of the promiscuous DL man is to hit-it and quit-it and slipping on a condom is slow and a mood killer. The committed DL brother doesn't use protection because he's sexing only you...and his girl. Ask him to use a condom and he gets offended. He has trust issues and he begins to ask... "Who else are you sleeping with?" As a gay man who has dealt with DL men I know they are less likely to practice safe sex.

I hear a lot about DL men not being the catalyst of the high HIV rate in women but I sure don't hear a lot of facts backing up their claims. If it's not the DL men or infection through drug use then what is it?

Eric Daniels

Another movie bashing black men all in the name of dialouge about a diease that has no sexual preference. The Hollywood elite is so out of touch it's silly. This movie if not presented right will lead to more homopobia in the hetrosexual BM community.

Rebecca

Mr. Boykin: If this movie continues to spread misinformation and demonize black men then how do we stop it or protest?

One perspective that has been lost in this discussion for years now is that black women lose out too when misinformation about repressed or closeted homosexuals is disseminated.

In popular "DL" stories, black women are often depicted as clueless victims without agency to control our behavior and partner well with men. Our assumed ignorance and victimhood makes us seem as if we need to be "saved" on the one hand (a perennial theme of black women's lives, especially in the church) and enraged on the other. The rageful, angry, overly needy, blameful black woman--the sassing bitch--is a huge negative stereotype. Please feel free to add these ideas to your arsenal of reasons why misinformation about closeted behaviors hurts us all, regardless of gender and race.

Please give us more information to complain to the film's producers and performers.

LulaMae

Its a sad shame and a hot mess that this man is not better informed. its bad enough to see that we still have to deal with the negative sexual stereotypes of black men being wild and promiscuous and black women loose and with no morals from society as a whole, but to have marquee black stars perpetuating this bald face lie is a disgrace, demonizing their own with misinformation. And, all black bloggers need to get the word out about this misinformation under the guise of entertainment.

If this movie does come out, there should be boycotts in front of every theatres, even though I don't see it in theaters, more like straight to DVD.

brucito

Does anyone remember that Bill Dike played a homo pimp in the American Gigolo? As for Patty Labelle I hope the next time her black ass is on TV and all of you whores out there start screaming "you go girl" you all remember just how much of a damn she really gives about your feelings. I am now reminded of that statement Elvis Presley was supposed to have said about blacks can just buy his records. This sounds about the same.

PnutButtrJllyTime

I cannot believe most people on here would "demonize," as everyone so easily used the word to apply to others, Patti, Sheryl and the other participants of the movie. These people are actors, and whether you agree with it or not, it is a role to play w/ a paycheck at the end of production. Also, everyone on here needs to note that in Africa, one of the ways HIV was spreading among the women was because the men who worked in the South African diamond mines would be in those mines working for months at a time, all the while having sex w/ one another, then taking diseases back to their wives when the mining job was done.
Why are WE homosexuals always playing the victim role? In the psychological world we call that "infantile self." Me, me, me. I agree this black man/dl thing is outta control in the media and it's old. And the only sure fire way to curb the spread of HIV is to KEEP YOUR CLOTHES ON AND SAY NO!

Mitch

Come on people let's get real. This is 2007. People have choices. Life is about making choices. Folks have to stop blaming their bad actions on SOCIETY. Yes, we all know it's not an easy road to accept your sexuality, however, a person with character and MORALS will make the right decision. I am so tired of people enabling these men that want to creep with other men while being married or in a committed relationship. They need to get help. It's not healthy nor right. I have met too many woman infected by their husbands and boyfriends to know this has to stop.

2black

In reference to the movie, its main objective should be to educate people on HIV/AIDS instead of placing blame. I hope that Bill Duke recently researched the statistics before diplaying them to the public. The DL hype is nothing new, I just want the movie to be educational in a positive and dehumanize the black gay man any more than society is trying to do it. Hopefully the DL brothers will take heed to what the purpose of the movie is to change their behavior.

ToddyEnglish

Alright, I just watched the trailer and this movie has straight to video written all over it. There are no name actors in it and it looks so low budget(sorta like Trois, Trois 2, and Trois 3). And, on a shallow note, the guys in the movie aren't really that hot(well, I wouldn't kick the lead actor out of bed). So, really, I don't think it will have that much of an impact, unless Bill Duke goes on Oprah.

Furthermore, the statistics he had at the end of the trailer are so bogus. He is portraying all black women as innocent and unwitting victims of the DL which is total horse shit. If you don't know that there are married men who have sexual intercourse with other men then you must be living under a rock.

This is just a vehicle to further demonize black men. Even in a situation that could create empathy for the protagonist black male he still comes off looking like the villain. And it is just further perpetuating the stereotype that all gay men are HIV infected.

Mitch

I just watched the trailer and I believe it shows great promise. The story seems to be equally balanced (it's hard to tell from a trailer, but i felt better watching this trailer than Norbit). It conveys his own confusion about his sexuality and inability to deal with what he is feeling. It also tells the story of how the wife feels about the situation as well. The 70 percent number is stunning, but do we actually know? How many women have committed to stay with their spouses after being infected. Data is only reliable when the sources are honest. I think this is a story that needs to be told for the Black community to take heed and listen. It's up to us to use this film as a catalyst to start a dialogue within the Black community. We can not be fearful of what people will think. We do have many brothers living the live protrayed in this clip.

ron

I recently saw Cheryl Lee Ralph do her one women performance of "Sometimes" I Cry" about women living with HIV, very good and informing presentation. Ms Ralph is obviously very aware and does work in the HIV community along with her husband PA State Rep. C. Vincent Hughes. She did not mention once in her 90 minute presentation anything about "the down low"

Lucretia

Thanks again Keith. I find the ongoing musings about men on the DL to be quite interesting. This entire phenomenon is nothing new. The attention it has garnered in the Black community seems unwarranted. And yet, I think the discussion can be credited with creating more dialogue about same sex loving men and women of the African Diaspora. Surely, it would be too simplistic to think that men on the DL are to blame for rising rates of HIV infection in our community. Yet, taking such a stance helps to distract us from the much needed dialogue that needs to happen. I would put more money on ignorance and homophobia rooted in an outdated religious rhetoric and morality. As for Bill Duke's movie perhaps he will see fit to produce a PSA trailer similar to "what Black men think" about HIV in the Black community with just the facts . . just the facts

DaLawn Simpson

Keep in mind that one bad habit of almost all Black males regardless of sexual orientation is the refusal to go to the doctor for ANYTHING! It probably comes from generations of justifiable paranoia that the doctor is going to stick you with a needle and give you something. That way of thinking was internalized by Black males long before HIV/AIDS was ever in known existence. If HIV/AIDS was/is a gay disease it would have wiped ALL humans off the face of the Earth centuries ago. Judging by the average time frame of initial infection of HIV/AIDS to the point of being full blown or dead it should be obvious that it really must have made it's way into society in the 1950's or 60's at the latest to infect so many people by the early 80's. The only REAL difference between stereotypical promiscuous straight males and stereotypical promiscuous gay males is a woman saying "no". If allowed to have our way, most straight males would be way more promiscuous than any gay man we can point a finger at! DaLawn Simpson.

Mike C

The epidemic of HIV/AIDS knows no color barriers. It infects and affects the lives of human beings. The spread of this plague I believe is directly related to security one has in his/hers sexuality. Those who are confident in themselves and their life are more likely to have stronger boundaries when it comes to playing safe. Being a white HIV infected gay man I know this from experience. I fought myself for years trying to accept my "gayness". I lived a life of poor judgement and impulsiveness before I became to accept my sexual orientation. My path to this acceptance was costly. I became involved in drugs and dangerous sexual habits. As a result I contracted HIV and fdell deeper into depression. Wih the help of some wonderful people who loved me while I learned how to love myself I overcame. Today, I take care of myself. My sexual partner preference is black men on the DL. In my experience they are the most down to earth, real, caring and careful people in the world.

DaLawn Simpson

Looks like he's still on the path, and way further along than before.
"Preference is black men on the DL..." WTF???? "I like married black men
who are cheating on their wives with other men - and I like to share my
disease with them because I hate women, black women especially, so much
that I want to kill their husbands with my polluted dick." Wow. Just wow. Talk about rationalizing gay bashing!

Wow! way harsh my friend. Thanks for the negative analysis and the insinuation that I am a criminal. You know nothing about me or my experiences..so how dare you judge me and life.
First of all I do not mess with married men. The DL is not exclusive to married men. I DATE men who are professional and estblished. Coming out is not a good choice for them. And sharing my disease... that comment is somewhat libelous. It would be criminal to knowingly pass my disease.
Thanks for your comments but they are just plain WRONG!

Dear Keith:

As one who has been a part of the film "Cover". I would hope that everyone would really wait to view the film before passing any judgement. The story is a beautiful one and is about dishonesty within any relationship and how that dishonesty not only affects but can possibly lead to the infection of others who we love.
