You're Gonna Love Her

LaKisha

I'm changing my favorites for American Idol. Just yesterday morning I expressed my support for Antonella Barba, LaKisha Jones and Melinda Doolittle, but after watching last night's show I have to replace Antonella Barba with Stephanie Edwards. Stephanie kicked off the show with an inspired rendition of Alicia Keys's version of "How Come You Don't Call Me." Melinda hit it with Aretha Franklin's "Since You've Been Gone." But it was LaKisha Jones who brought down the house with her show-stopping finale performance of Jennifer Holliday's legendary "And I Am Telling You."

The women were head and shoulders above the men from Tuesday night's show. In fact, the women were in an entirely different class. It's still way too early to make predictions, but I can't see any of the men who can sing as well as the top two or three women. And no one can belt out a song better than LaKisha Jones. Based on the women's show, Amy Krebs should be packing her bags for Seattle. Nicole Tranquillo and Haley Scarnato are also in danger of going home.

Meanwhile, on the men's side, it's harder to predict who's going home because there were so many average to below average performances. It wouldn't surprise me if Paul, Rudy, Sundance or even Sanjaya (one of my favorites) went home because none of their performances were memorable.

The funny thing is that I have really become addicted to American Idol. I started watching it a few years ago just to bond with my partner Nathan, who loves the show. Eventually I got hooked on it myself but I still always watched it with Nathan. Now Nathan is out of town this week but I'm glued to the television watching the show by myself. I guess I understand why it's the number one television show in America. My mom has even gotten in on American Idol fever, and she told me last night that she didn't watch me on Paula Zahn because she was watching American Idol instead.

In any event, I'm looking forward to the many weeks ahead as the field of performers narrows down to the final few. Tuesday's show made me question the judges' choices, but last night's show reminded me again why I love American Idol. And as long as I can, I'm going to love LaKisha Jones.

Keith Boykin! That is not Alicia's song. It's one of Prince's best slow jams; ironically, covered by another Stephanie some 20 years ago - that's Stephanie Mills for the young or sheltered.

At this point, I think only Blake may have a chance of hanging with the ladies for this whole thing. We'll see. LaKisha is the one to watch. However, I think many of us said similar things about Mandisa at this stage of the competition, and she definitely needs to believe she can fly. Same with Melinda. Heck, many of them. Looks like a very curious journey to choosing Idol #6.

Paige Turner

I'm not loving her yet. Her voice is better than decent but I found her interpretation to be corny, hackneyed and awkward. I was hoping she could have soared on the top notes but it never peaked. Also, It didn't help that the arrangement was bizarrely abridged. There are other songs she can do well, for sure but this one did not work for me one bit. I was shocked when Randy actually compared her to Karen Clark.

Well, they have to hype someone and convince you she's great in order for you to connect and return next week. After rightfully panning the guys and with JHud being all the rage, LaKisha is an obvious candidate - at least for now - they'll hype others later.

It's mind boggling that after auditioning thousands of people that this is what Fox came up with. Of the 24, only Melinda Doolittle was truly solid. No one else was exceptional and that's pathetic considering the "extensive" talent hunt.

The bar is set so low that the most generic and mediocre people seem better than they are.

Of course I would stop watching before the "You Are Going To Love Her" girl performed. I general tend to only watch AI when everyone is outstanding. I thought that would be the case last night (and the reason why I did not watch the night the boys sang) but after a few horrible performances, I turned the television off and wen tto bed. I wish I would have watched the eniter show.

Reality Check

Why does every black woman on earth think they can sing "and I am telling you?" I"m so tired of that song I could throw up!

cmoney

I'm with you, Paige Turner. This is a really weak field for American Idol. It seems they picked people just for novelty value instead of whether or not they could actually sing. This is especially so with the guys. I'm sure that the next American Idol will not be a male. LaKisha was good, but not "all that". It's just taht compared to the horrible singers before her, she sounded like a superstar. I think Gina Glocksten (?), the performer before Lakisha, will give her a run for the money and may take the competition. On the male side, I think Sanjaya is going to surprise a lot of people. Simon was unduly harsh on him and he will get sympathy votes.

Thanks for the catch, Demetrius. I didn't want to have to go off on KB for that, but Prince made that song SIZZLE! I love it indeed.

As it relates to just WOW FACTOR, a few people "HMMMed" me as in HMM, SHE MIGHT BE SOMEONE TO WATCH: Stephanie was good; loved Jordin, who sang the wrong song with that Tracy Chapman song, but still really sang; I can't remember the first girl's name who sang I AIN'T NEVER LOVED A MAN and yes, LaKisha was strong, but the chopped up way she had to delivered "AND I AM TELLING YOU" left me wanting more.

It was MELINDA DOLITTLE, solid, strong, savvy and sure, who sang her face off. Every hand gesture, her winning smile, her stance and her conviction (WHILE SINGING, I don't care if she's shy while she speaks, as many singers are like that) and her pure power make HER the one to watch for me! That heffa hollered!

KB, I agree! I loved Antonella, but SHE TANKED!

gs

I loved LaKisha...but I've got to give the edge to Melinda Dolittle. So far....all of the sistahs have done VERY well. They're in a league by themselves.

Charles

American Idol is such a boring show...just my opinion!

bubba

I've only seen a clip of LaKisha, but her rendition was the most polite I've ever heard. It had none of the fire I'd anticipate in the song.

nilla4me[TypeKey Profile Page]

Several things. Why is everyone forgetting Sabrina? She truly turnt it. Antonella ain't going nowhere...she's the pick of the girls at vote for the worst...anyone remember how long scott savol remained on the show after they backed him. Her dirty party girl antics are going to be the highlight of the season.

And we're quick to judge after one viewing, it seems. NO ONE hits it out of the park every time. I didn't think that Melinda's song was all that great considering the vocal range isn't that difficult and she's my favorite. I couldn't believe they let LaKisha sing that song...it's a death trap.

Knowing Rudy's and Blake's background from a vocal band standpoint...you haven't seen anything from these two yet. Rudy truly picked a horrible song, but it's that west coast blankness coming out. The song is still hot in LA for some reason.

It'll be interesting, I just know my overall faves are sent home early (Daughtry anyone?).

Deacon

Being that this year's AI group is very lack luster on the mens side the only male to make any impression was Jared, as far the women, Jordin, Lakisha, Melinda, Sabrina and Stephanie.

JCW

Sanjaya? I am not a fan of that boy. His voice is okay for la-laing in the shower, but I cannot imagine his tepid voice on the radio. American Idol winners need to have power to their voice. I am looking for Melinda, Lakisha, and Gina to go far.

Trent

When I watch Idol, I usually watch for Simon's honesty and the contestants' reactions to it. But last night, I was personally blown away by LaKisha. Based only on last night's show, I would go out and buy her album if she had one already (and I rarely buy albums at all)...so we'll see how well she stacks up the rest of the comptetition.

My only problem with LaKisha is that after she sang with all that conviction and fire, she acted like she was ashamed of herself. I wanted one of the judges to tell her to stand up tall, be proud of who she is, and SMILE...she truly kicked some ass last night.

On the guys' side of things, I have to say I have a crush on Brandon, but he let me down on Tuesday. Here's hoping he does well.

Terrence

LaKisha Jones, who lived in Houston for a time, and Melinda Doolittle are my favorites too. The brothas aren't too inspiring - at least not yet. I think Sabrina Sloan is one to watch as well.

BTW, Demetrius and TheRevKev, Keith suggested that Stephanie Edwards sang Alicia Keys's version of "How Come You Don't Call Me" - not that Alicia did it first.

GD

I will hate this show if Lakisha, Melinda, Sabrina, Stephanie, and Jordan didn't make the finals, but I wouldn't be surprised. Look how Season 3 turned out! Don't forget Sabrina, she kicked azz!

chris-leo

after "auditioning" STADIUMS full of people in several states across the nation, THIS is the best they can do??? top 24?? IN THE COUNTRY?????!!!! and they even expanded the age range up to -- i think -- 28. ASTOUNDING.

after all this, we get TWO or THREE boys who can sing. NONE have exceptional talent that i can recognize. no johnny gills, stevies, luthers, dinos. we don't even have a sisqo. we have one and a half black girls on the show who are solid, and by that i mean Melinda Doolittle. i ain't featuring none of the white girls this year. and I KNOW there's some white girls out there, waiting tables who can sing like karen carpenter, celine, barbra, judy or patsy kline. any k.d. lang's out there??? ANY???? C'MON!!!

there's something flawed with the selection process.

and even after they're picked, neither randy, paula nor simon have the skills or vocabulary to help these kids out.

wake me when it's over. i ain't watchin' this mediocre shit this year.

ToddyEnglish

Uhm, I'm not really feelin her. Honestly, no one--including Jennifer Hudson--can sing that song like Jennifer Holliday. Her original rendition is the Gold, penultimate, standard for "And I am telling you." Everyone else just copies her vocal inflections and melismas. Lakeisha's was so hacked to bits(trying to fit it in in under a minute 30)that it came off bland. The most important part of that song are the lyrics. It has to be emotional and all I got from Lakeisha is that she was trying to show off her voice.

In my opinion Sabrina Sloan is the one to beat. Now that sistah can sing, lookin like the black Barbara Streisand! love her!

Jake McKenzie

Sabrina was amazing! Just fantastic. She will win.

Lesbians need to rediscover their femininity for it is their advantage, it is what makes women superior to men. Perhaps it is the vulnerability that helps them readily find the path.
When a woman repells from her femininity it is a bad sign for it means the gods don't want her to be favored. Butchs and other lesbians need to rediscover this dynamic because this is the trait that can save them.
My advice to homosexuals woudl be the following:::
1. Stop enagaging in promiscuity and groups sex. This hurts you very badly.
2. Be monagamous.
3. Stop watching pornography.
4. Be as decent and respectable as you can wihtin the context of your sexual orientation.

Even if you go up you are not saved. YOU have to fix YOUR problems with the gods. They won't respect it otherwise.
You have to take responsibility for your relationship with the gods.

The first steps towards repairing your relationship with the gods is to:::::::::
1. Understand

Just watched the girls in week two of AI...Here's the rundown IMO: Melinda blew this round like she came to win, just incredible...Stephanie also delivered great vocals and energy, (even overcoming the possible pitfalls of singing a popular Beyonce song)...Lekisha, who was deemed the frontrunner last week, (which can sometimes work to a disadvantage), didn't come on stage last night with enough spark, confidence, technique or song choice, (nothing against Gladys Knight), she was upstaged this round by Melinda...Sabrina, (way off key on that Whitney tune this week), Gina and Jordin all have voices but just sang ok...Unfortunately, Antonella, Alaina, Leslie and Haley are all weak, forgetable and should be prepared to pack their bags...anyway that's my take...anyone else?

Dele

I loved Lakisha version of I am telling you. I saw Jennifer Holiday singing it on the roof during E- red carpet for the oscars & Jennifer Hudson on Dreamgirls & HOLIDAYS VERSION WAS GREAT & SO WAS HUDSONS............BUT VOCALLY LAKISHA'S WAS BETTER....
Sanjaya is getting sympathy votes because the judges are generally being hard on him..............ANYTIME HE IS ON MY GAYDAR GOES ON RED ALERT...........THAT SANJAYA IS SUCH A SISTA..........HE TAKES UP THE BUTT LIKE ANY NORMAL HOMO............LOL.

victor

Lakeisha was in the bottom 2 !!!!! She was overrated from the start. MELINDA is my favorite female in the history of American Idol( formerly LaToya London)My girl is in it to win it!!!!!!!!!!!!! Blake is setting my " gaydar" off in a major way. I think Jordin and Melinda will be in the finals. I again think that Melinda will start to pull away from the competition from this point on. Work it on it Melinda !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

titi

LAKEISHA NEEDED TO TURN DOWN HER SHOUTING THEN SHE MAY GET IN TOUCH WITH THE TRUE TEXTURE OF HER VOICE.HER PRESENCE ON STAGE IS NOT THAT IMPRESSIVE LIKE MELINDA DOOLITTLE.. . MELINDA IS AN ACCOMPLISH ARTIST HONESTLY.

Rodwell E Rolle

You are the greatest. You have many fans here in the Bahamas. We love you and we want to see you as the next American Idol. last time we had Fantasia here and we look forward to having you here for a concert.

Quince

I'm sorry but this Lakisha hype has been going on for too long a time.Wednesday put an end to her for me and I personally don't care to hear another note from that woman.

I think her voice and style of singing is mediocre at best. She is definitely no Melinda Dolittle. No no no no,Melinda is a far better singer than Ms Jones.I just could never get ready for Lakisha's belting out a song thinking that would win votes.Just totally destroying good songs.

I also picked up on a deep mean streak in that girl.I never cared for her.
