Tim Hardaway: "I Hate Gay People"

By Keith Boykin, in sports
Thursday, February 15 2007, 8:54AM

Tim HardawayJust a week after former NBA player John Amaechi came out of the closet as the league's first openly gay player, another NBA player is making news for his words on homosexuality. Retired Miami Heat guard Tim Hardaway told a radio show that he hates gay people and that he would never want a gay player like Amaechi on his team.

Hardaway said: "First of all, I wouldn't want him on my team. And second of all, if he was on my team I would really distance myself from him. I don't think that he should be in the locker room while we're in the locker room...I hate gay people, so I let it be known. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. Yeah, I'm homophobic. I don't like it. There shouldn't be a [place] in the world for that or in the United States for it. So I don't like it."

Hardaway made the comments while he was a guest on Sports Talk 790 The Ticket. Hardaway even said if he did find out that a teammate was gay, he would ask for the player to be traded or to be bought out of his contract because it would make other players feel uncomfortable in the locker room. He later apologized for the remarks during a live telephone interview with WSVN Channel 7. "Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that. That was my mistake."

Mistake? That's no mistake, Tim Hardaway. That's your pure unadulterated homophobia coming out. It's one thing to slip up and use a word like "fag" or "faggot," but it's quite another thing to say in public that you "hate" an entire group of people. That is inexcusable. I am not the least bit sorry to say this. Tim Hardaway's broadcasting career should come to a screeching halt. No apologies, no excuses, no rehab. Just fire his ass anywhere and everywhere he works with the media. Then maybe he'll remember what it's like to be a member of a discriminated minority group.

"I'm actually tempted to laugh," John Amaechi responded to The Miami Herald. "Finally, someone who is honest. It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable. But it is honest. And it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far."

Hardaway has reportedly been removed from further league-related appearances, according to the Associated Press. "It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Stern's position makes sense and Hardaway's apology seems insincere. In fact, Hardaway repeated his homophobic comments in a second, lengthier interview later that day with Jim Berry on CBS4. The former NBA player said he would not even talk to a family member who was gay because he doesn't "condone" homosexuality. Hardaway said he considers homosexuality to be "nasty." "I'm getting sick by even thinking about it now," he said.

KEITH!

I AGREE 1000%!!!

I FIRST HEARD THE STORY JUST A FEW HOURS AGO ON "TODAY" AND HIS UGLINESS WAS SO RIDICULOUS THAT ANN CURRY STARTED TO LAUGH AT THE END OF THE STORY! "HE CAN'T BE SERIOUS?" SHE SAID AND THEN HAD BANTER WITH AL, MEREDITH AND MATT ABOUT THE PIECE.

FIRE HIM!
DON'T HIRE HIM!
REMIND HIM WHAT BIGOTED BEHAVIOR CAN DO!

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR HIS PISS-POOR APOLOGY, AFTERWARDS WHEN HE AND HIS PEOPLE ARE WORRIED THAT IT MIGHT COST HIM SOMETHING! HE SAID IT! HE MEANT IT! IT NEEDS TO COST HIM SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!

THIS KIND OF ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR FROM BLACK FOLKS HAS GOT TO STOP! ISAIAH MEANT IT! TIM MEANT IT! WE HAVE GOT TO STOP BEING SO MEALYMOUTHED, BECAUSE TRUTHFULLY PEOPLE TAKE OUR KINDNESS FOR WEAKNESS AND THIS TALL, THICK, STRONG, STRAPPING BROTHER IS SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE STEPPING TO MY PEOPLE THIS WAY!

ENOUGH!

cmoney

What a jerk. But at least he's honest. For him to "come out" with is hatred like this in public must mean he deeply feels this way. He has to know that his statement would not be well received in the media, eventhough many people agre with his feelings. Perhaps he's upset about those nude lockerroom pictures of him that were circulating around the internet last year. What? You haven't seen them yet? They'll be back, I'm sure.

C. Baptiste-Williams

I agree with Amaechi on this one. I am glad that he was honest with his views. I'd rather a man tell me to my face the truth, than to laugh and smile in my face and be lying.

I respect his views no matter how ridiculous they are but now know not to support him or anything he endorses.

Marlon

For heaven's sake brothers, isn't this a free country with free speech the last time I checked? We have become so PC that I am about to vomit. Tim is simply expressing himself as Archie Bunker did years ago. Now we walk around today afraid of offending a group or segment of the population. The question is what about truth about the gay lifestyle that sickens Tim, what truism about being gay in American that makes Tim lash out verbally? Let us first clean up our gay community and the shallowness, selfish living, sex obsessed focus and youth worship. Maybe those are what brought Tim to say what he said before the world's view.

Blue

I agree with Baptiste-Williams ... he just said what a whole lot of other people are feeling. It's horrible but I'm not surprised. I've come to expect that kind of foolishness from straight black men. More people think like that than any of us realize. Still, he should be fired because I'm sure that is not the kind of representation they want or need.

Troy

The biggest homosexuals are the ones that hate it. You'd be surprised who's truly in the so-called closet. Tim meet Isiah. More members headed to Gay A. Ugh! And here I was thinking most black men had it together mentally, what the hell was I thinking?!

James

I don't think people are trying to deny him free speech. Most people seem to be shocked at the ignorance of his comments and that in a public forum in 2007 he would say something so uncouth and uninformed.

ks25

I am so tired of homophobia from black heterosexuals towards Same sex loving, or gay people of color dealing with the same old issues all the time. Personally, I could care less anymore, if someone makes a homophobic remark, or anyone disapproves of my sexual preference But to say you hate in public and then apologize is just wrong and I do agree with Keith he should be fired.

How dare him some of these Black heterosexuals say homophobic remarks in public against there own people? You know who I blame for all this is us to some extent! What makes Tim think John would be attracted to him?

We need to stop supporting chruchs and Black institutions that our homophobic period!!!!!

Jon C.

I find Tim Hardaway's comments insulting, insensitive and hateful. At the same time, I am happy that he is honest and forthright in spewing his anti-gay sentiments. Although extreme, I feel Hardaway's views reflect a hompophobic tone and ideology that many others share in this society. I feel we may start to progress when we can speak honestly with one another and gague where one another stands on gay matters no matter how ignorant, hateful or enlightened one is or feels. I think it allows the opportunity for us to open dialogues and to interrogate the reasonings and roots of this person's feelings. At the same time, his hateful remarks create a hostile environment and he should be fired from his media jobs.

jay

I am sure Hardaway has a whip to beat the faggots and noose to hang them, he has been sanctioned by God to rid the earth of sodomites, all sodomites should be hanged, just like white slave masters use to hang niggers like Hardaway especially when they got out of line, hell them niggers was not good for much else, just like the faggots Hardaway hates so much, hell if Hardaway was white he would be a member of the KKK.
Hardaway is 100% low-grade fool.

Andre Allen

you know living here in south florida and actually hearing the interview live i was shock and dismay at what he sad and i dont think he is sorry at all. THose of u do not know that before he did talk too wsvn channel 7 live and apolized at 11:03pm esterday he did an interview with jim berry of channel 4 miami's cbs affilate. HE said even if had a gay family member he would not associate himself with them. What tim said was wrong, he should be fired from working with the media and also is owner of an ABA team he should have that revoked

Shawn

I just read this story on MSNBC or CONN.com and it doesn't surprise me with the stupid shit that comes out of people's mouth. But what made me even more upset is reading the comments people left on MSNBC. People left comments quoting from the Bible about homosexuality and agreeing with Hardaway's comments. I just couldnt read anymore. I'm only 22 years old and I'm realizing that the people making all these negative comments are the ones that will be my co-workers in the future. And honestly I wouldn't know what to do if I had to deal with something like that in the workplace.

Gary

He is not being honest and forthright. If he was secure in his sexuality why would he "feel uncomfortable in the locker room." He couldn't even say say he, he had to project his feelings on others. All this venom comes from hating himself.

h2B

For those that remember there was a lockeroom video of him floating around for years. Tim's homophobic attitude is definately a beard for his hidden sexuality. Those of us that are old enough know there was always a lil sugar there and now he wants to be a "bad boy" ROTFLMAO

JSUphinest601

Thanks Hardaway for being honest. I am guessing he had a bad experience with the GLBT community. You guys know what I mean.......Anyway, At least he’s honest! I rather know that I am hated than someone smiling in my face. Not only should he be fired, he should be required to make a public apology and then Fire his ass!! I am sick and tired of African Americans discriminating against their own people. We all are black! How can African Americans practice hate and prejudice among themselves and think we are going to overcome prejudice and social injustice that still exist in America? It makes me think that this Former NBA Tim Hardaway is just a dumb ass basketball player from the hood and was lucky to receive a meal ticket out of the Ghetto. But, it’s sad to say we have some educated fools out there who are practicing hate. I thought education was to enlighten and educate an individual....... Yes, people should have freedom of speech, however, not public and broadcasted freedom of speech.

Bobby

I actually agree wholeheartedly with John Amaechi's POV: "Finally, someone who is honest. It is ridiculous, absurd, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable. But it is honest. And it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far." Particularly, the last part. "Fuzzy language" like that used by Isaiah Washington. I do, however, STRONGLY disagree with Keith's remark: "It's one thing to slip up and use a word like 'fag' or 'faggot..." No, let's be honest here. That's not "one thing." That's indicative of the SAME kind of hatred. I think Keith is being extremely disingenuous here in trying to reconcile the unreconcilable: his stance on Isaiah Washington with his stance on Tim Hardaway. The result, in my opinion, is that his position on both is compromised.

Gregg

It's obvious he has issues. To spue such hatred and in the same breath apologize demnonstrates instability on his part. Anyone that chooses to be in the public eye should know better. He is not ready for prime time.

lightnessofbeing

May his words become his lesson.

DDC

Geez! When will this end? Can we get through a whole season now without some celebrity offending millions of unsuspecting people??? And notice that he regrets he SAID it. No part of his "apology" contains any regret for feeling the way he does. It's truly sickening:

"Yes, I regret it. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said I hate gay people or anything like that. That was my mistake."

I don't know if he's a self-hating latent gay man or not, but to me that's a non-issue. Would his insults be any less powerful if you learned that he was?? I mean come on, was segregationlist Strom Thurmond any less offensive because he had a half-black child he put through college? Puleeze. I just truly regret that these homophobic comments are coming from black men.

curious887

Bobby, I completely disagree with you. It is one thing to use the word "faggot." I don't agree with what IW did and I'm glad he was called on it. That was as inappropriate as what Michael Richards said. However, it is quite another thing to say that you hate gay people and that they do not belong in the world or the United States. What was that? That just condones gay bashing and hateful acts against gays. That goes well beyond use of the word nigger or faggot. I'm just sorry this is coming from a black man. But it goes to show that there is such hatred against gays in our community. We lambast GLAAD for not having our back, but what can we expect? Our own community looks on us with disdain. We are invisible in two communities: the larger black community and the white gay community.

Nathan James

I am sick with fury over the recent string of rabidly homophobic incidents I've seen on this site over the past few days. First, LeBron's comments about closeted gay NBA players being "untreustworthy", then Devon Christopher's subway incident, and now Tim Hardaway's disgusting rants. "There shouldn't be a place in the world for [homosexuality]"??? I wonder if Hardaway knows that Birmingham's evil 1960s police chief, Bull Connor, said almost exactly the same thing about black people. Connor tried his best to hose, beat, and shoot blacks off the face of the Earth. Does Hardaway really wish the same for gays?

Hardaway should be made to understand that attitudes like his are what led to horrors like Jim Crow and Nazi Germany. His words are like daggers aimed at gay people everywhere, and I know I may be too emotional about this, but it left me literally shaking with rage...

andre allen

the hatred will only end when more and more people continue to stand up and say yes i am a proud gay male

Mel Smith

Look, his comments were disgusting. First, people like him don't see us as black like him. Two, the dude would discriminate against his own family members, if they were gay. That last quote distinguish us from every other social groups. Mothers and Fathers discriminate against their own gay children. Now, what other group of people suffered like that? What other group of people were discriminated against by their own family members? A few months ago, Michael Richards made those disgusting remarks and a BLACK PERSON will do this in 2007? I am just waiting for someone to disrespect me in my face! True, people will begin to physically attack us in 2007. Will you guys defend yourselves?

MrWrite

To Marlon: No one has attempted to deny or suggested that Tim Hardaway should be denied free speech. Those who disagree publicly with Hardaway are simply exercising THEIR right to free speech by criticizing the content of his remarks. Yes, Hardaway has his right to free speech, but that right does not include immunity from criticism or a guarantee that there won't be negative consequences for the what he freely chose to say.

Bobby

Curious887,

But what do you think people mean when they use the word faggot in anger? In my observation, when they use that word (or the n-word) in anger, it's shorthand for exactly what Tim Hardaway expressed. To believe otherwise is rather naive, and self-deceptive, in my view.

Tony

Gregg summed it up briefly and perfectly "....(he) demonstrates instability....." Hardaway should be totally ignored, because he is trying to weigh in on the (2 minutes) attention that Amaechi in getting. he obviously has serious gay issues of his own. maybe he should write a book and let it all *out*

dcguy

Marlon,

I don't know what "lifestyle" you're talking about. It's my life. My lifestyle is paying my taxes, being a good neighbor, getting up in the morning and going to work. Why is it with gay people its a lifestyle but with straight people it's not? Stop using their shit-for-brains terminology. It's your LIFE. Being gay is your orientation.

Mikey--He Likes It

And I can't stand dumb jock douche bags. YUCK!!

Marlon

Come now now! As gay black men we say hateful things to each other all the time. We are the first to throw hate at brothers who are too feminine, we hate DL brothers, we hate fat brothers, we hate 'old' gay men and we hate to associate with brothers who are not chisled, toned and phyiscally phine. We ourselves help create this poisonous atmosphere of hate and we would easily show outrage when a straight does the same thing and ignore it when a gay man blatantly does it daily.

nreeldeep

I find it deliciously ironic that gay folk demand apologies all the time for off-color comments made by "heterosexuals", but when one offers an apology, there is never acceptance. But you will get up in Keith's religious blogs and defend your church and your pastor. Well didn't your Jesus make a strong statement about forgiveness? Yea I thought so. Your answer to that reveals which master you REALLY serve.

Last time I checked, it's not against the law to hate someone or a group of people and wish they were somewhere else. As a gay brotha, I accept Mr. Hardaway's stance. Further, he doesn't owe me an apology. I appreciate his honesty.

The day we as gay brothas stop demanding everybody accept us and love us, and begin the process of learning how to love ourselves, we will see the world open up for us. Until then your happiness will continue to rest upon the permission of another.

Mel Smith

Actually, the more we come out, the more hate we face! I might be wrong, but that is exactly what's taking place place in 2007. We can't ignore that man comments. He personally called us to war! As usually, we are made to look like scum and Tim's the real jerk. Go visit blackplanet.com forums and read how other black heterosexual people feel about us. Soon, you will have people promoting an exterminating campaign against us and the 'Christians' will justify it in the name of God. If they want war, so be it.

Trent

OK, Hardaway is a fine looking man but, maybe h2B and Troy are right...there's more to it than simply hating an entire group of people. In the immortal words of Gertrude from Shakespeare's Hamlet, "The lady doth protest too much, methinks." Hmmm....

curious887

Bobby, I'm being neither naive nor self-deceptive. I just believe that there is a visceral difference between using the word faggot, which I have heard people use in a variety of contexts, particularly during fits of anger, and saying that gay people have no place on this entire earth. The first, while ignorant and insensitive, differs from the latter, which basically condones hatred and outright violence against gays. I won't defend IW, but I don't think anyone would seriously argue that by referring to T.R. Knight as a faggot, he was trying to say he should be beaten, shot and otherwise die off the face of the earth. I can certainly draw that conclusion from Hardaway's words. I see a substantive distinction between merely using the word faggot once(which can be done in a variety of contexts) and spewing the repeated vitriol and hate that came out of Hardaway's mouth. Without putting things in context, I can't equate the two acts.

Malik Jones

ALLEGRO

First of all. let me say I find the comments of TIM HARDAWAY repulsive and ridiculous. At the same time, I can appreciate his honesty. i'd rather know where you stand to better inform my decisision of how to deal or NOT DEAL with you, than have to decipher your outlook through double speak or subversive actions.

I'm kind of suprised to hear this REACTIONARY RETALIATORY stance taken by a lot of you guys, including you KEITH. I mean is this the cost of FREE SPEECH? and if it is, does the punishement fit the crime? Hear me out...what's all this FIRING SUPPOSE TO DO....SHAME HIM INTO RE-THINKING HIS HOMOPHOBIA? In all likelihood...I doubt it. Yes...it will take him out o fthe picture....he'll have less exposure....but will it really do anything to change how he feels about gay people? One...all this firing and removal from spokesperson opportunities will only serve to give him another reason to hate gays. Two..the bigger issue never gets addressed.

Mel Smith

What Isiah said is totally different than what Tim Hardaway said. Tim was calling us out to war. Some of you really need to stop acting like uncle tom, self hating lunatics, and stop trying to defend what Tim Hardaway said. There is no excuse for what that man said. It was the lowest of the low. What next, will some of you excuse someone attacking you with a stick? This issue does not have anything to do with how we treat each other. Now, Tim just gave people the ok to attack us.

PDQ

Face it, the fool only apologized because his publicist and his agent told him he'd torpedoed his future and his marketability by making insanely stupid remarks on a radio show that will haunt him forever.

His only motive for apologizing is financial. He's gotta make the payments on the fancy leased cars and the heavily mortgaged house and he's got credit card bills to pay. He's gotta have bling and he's gotta keep up with all his other friends in the sports and entertainment world. The life of a former ghetto kid who made good is expensive ya know.

And I also agree with the people who intimated that he's protesting a little too much about his hatred of gays. I think he's tiptoed through the tulips before, if you catch my drift.

Anyone willing to come forward with details? Anyone?

Troy

Hmm, could this be the time to hate on his sponsors with the NBA included, because he's so hateful of certain people he really doesn't know?
What if he had a son who came home one day and announced he was Gay would he be hated too?
Mr. Hardaway how does the foot in your mouth not become the same one that'll one day kick you in your ass?

L.O.V

here's what mr. hardaway apology might look like.i'm sorry for making such comments but it's just that as a child i was molested by my uncle, father, step-father (or whatever male family member or friend you like to insert)and i deeply regret any pain or hurt feelings my comments my have caused.Of course all this will be said with a sad look and maybe tears

Dean

A few comments: 1. Hardaway has reportedly been removed from further league-related appearances. "It is inappropriate for him to be representing us given the disparity between his views and ours," NBA commissioner David Stern said in a statement to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Commissioner Stern has it right. 2. John Amaechi has it right in his comments about Hardaway. 3. Tim Hardaway appears to be sorry that he was caught being himself and not sorry for the words expressed or the feelings behind them. That is, essentially he's sorry that he "got caught" and the forseeable consequences. 4. One's sexual orientation (whether heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual) is not a "lifestyle". It's a life! To refer to the "gay lifestyle" suggests that it's subject to conscious change and is a choice. Sexual orientation is not a choice. 5. Gay men having as their Alpha and Omega looks, body, sex/sex appeal and youth is not a gay thing. It's a man thing--witness Hugh Hefner and others.

Bobby

But Curious,

"Faggot," when used in anger, IS hate speech. It represents, in a shortened version, EXACTLY what Tim Hardaway said in his long, rambling, ignorant speech. I'm frustrated and perplexed by your (and Keith's) attempt to separate the word--in its angry context--from its meaning.

When that MTA clerk was shouting "faggot" at Devon, what do you think he meant? He meant everything that Tim Hardaway said, but he simply didn't have the time or desire to say all of that. Same goes for Isaiah Washington (read my essay on that situation at http://thisisthediaspora.blogspot.com/2007/01/losing-isaiah.html). Lucky for them, there's one word that expresses that hatred quickly and succintly: faggot.

Karim

When I heard this, I was hardly surprised. As a black man, I am outraged that Hardaway would put another man down like that. I agree Keith, that this level of prejudice is unaceptable in a civilized society.

gs

The saddest part is that folks that think like him actually believe once they find out someone is gay...that person is gonna come after them for some sex. Being gay isn't all about the sex Mr. Hardaway. The retard.

bubba

It's nice to read about this from a blogger who can condemn this jerk outright, and not give him the soft treatment because he's black. I got the feeling Jasmyne Cannick didn't know which side to choose.

Troy

Thank god Hardaway isn't running for President!

Stringa

Wow!!!!!!

Timmy REALLY messed up.

Now his nude pics will get unearthed for the entire world to see. Have yall seen them? They are NOT remarkable....well except for the booty shots.

Sorry, for being so graphic - yet facts are facts. Brotha man got Nudes out there.

Maybe somebody need to question him about these revealing pics.

Harry

This one requires I comment. Heard it on the news this morning and I knew Keith wouldhave the subject on here by the end of the day...as i'm sure most of the regular commentors did as well. Again and again I get so disappointed...we people have a lot of evolving to do. Keith is right...fire him...no rehab, no empty gestures to the gay community, no televised apologies and running the late night circuit "Oh I'm so sorry...I didn't mean it...I meant something else". FIRE HIM...end of story. But what will happen given how ignorant we are as a society. He'll write a book they turn into a movie and then after 5 or 6 years he'll have his own reality show...SAD!

Bobby

Sorry about the broken link. Here is the correct one:

FYI; Back on yesterday's article concerning When Homophobia Hits Home by Keith Boykin; Make sure you send 2 complaints so that those (infamous for sleeping on the job) get the clear message and YOUR email of complaint. I sent 2 and got 2 emails confirmed back from MTA. Best emails I had ALL week!

Tim Hardaway - "Nigga" Slick Hypocrite: Noble Magazine Editorial
Isn't what he did considered a "Hate Crime?

This is shocking to some but to me, it was an everyday experience growing up in the Town Garden apartments in Buffalo, NY. The black boys were just this vicious and their parent(s) and older relatives would laugh at their taunts and encourage them to beat up the "faggots" in the neighborhood. I can remember plenty of black men and women encouraging their kids to "go and kick that faggot's ass." And rolling on their porches as their sons beat the hell out of the neighborhood black gay kids. Stomping them, slamming their heads on the ground and read more

Why is he so homophobic? Check out the picture... I can't see too many men chasin' him. He's so little.

I got a funny story. A few of my military buddies and I took a trip to Kansas City. We wanted to drink beer and pick up chicks so we decided to go to a night club. None of us had been to KC so we decided to pick a club with the longest line. Sure enough we get in there and I would say it was 50/50 split of gay/lesbian and straight. We danced to some house music and actually had good success with females at the club, but we decided to check out some other bars in the area. As we were leaving, one of my friends was approached by some straight guys who thought he was gay. They began to call him “fag” and other derogatory shit. Remember this guy is not gay, but these assholes really pissed him off so he started kicking the shit out 2 of the guys talking crap. Their buddies came to their defense. So we intervened and began to kick the crap out of all of them. As we beat them down, we talked crap like “how does it feel getting beat down by some fags.” I remember how discouraged these pussies were after the shit kickin’. Afterwards, I got one of the guy’s, whose ass we were kicking, girlfriends phone number. She called me that night and brought her friends to hang out with us at the hotel. We banged them too. It was a great weekend in KC.

chris-leo

yeah, this apology then rehab b.s. is the new magic cure for all social ills. sometimes a fool just needs to be shunned.

he doesn't need to do commentary or anything authorized by the NBA. let him do hair in a salon.

KeithR

I'm glad h2B mentioned the existence of the Hardaway video/pictures. These lockeroom pictures of a nude Hardaway, which appear to have been taken without his knowledge, have been circulating on gay (and other?) websites for years. Perhaps Hardaway is aware of this fact and its made him angry to have secretly taken pictures of his naked body all over the web - (I'd be upset too). It would be interesting to ask him if this is where part of his anger towards homosexuals comes from. However even if this if the case, its obviously no excuse for his behavior.

Chet

I am absolutely appalled at the statement Tim Hardaway has made in reference to his dislike...excuse me his hate for gay people. How can one expect the youth and others to understand different cultures or lifestyles if public figures continue to show support for hatred of gays and others. I agree that Tim should immediately be dismissed from any public speaking engagements or public announcement jobs, under no circumstances should he be allowed to address the public especially since he openly admits to hating gays, what's next hangings at Towne Hall?

manchild1

Stern just yanked him from all all star proceeding this
weekend, siting he does not represent the NBA...how just.

TS

Although, I've never posted a comment on this website I have been a regular reader for a year or so. I felt compelled to comment on this topic because of the media uproar and I'm a huge sports fan. While, I vehemently disagree with Tim's ignorant and hateful comments I do respect him for speaking his misguided truth. I would much rather have people be open and honest about their biases and prejudices. In my opinion, we really don't make progress until we hear and see the most vile aspects of bigotry/hate. For those of you who may not be sports fans, I would urge you to read Chris Broussard's blog on ESPN.com about John Amaechi's coming out. The link to Broussard's article is http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=2764353&name=broussard_chris.

Whoissean

I see it as progress. it's like the civil rights movement, did we not think we were goingto provoke. Coming out was suppse to piss some people off, so we should rejoice. Another gay brutha has courage and knows that freedom isn't so easy. For thos comments that say he's an easy, let's get over the PC culuture, just because they don't say it, don't mean they don't think it. I'm so happy hate is coming out the closet again, at least we can address now. At least we know how to protect ourselves now. There is nothign worse than PC when he says our company is going a different direction. Hate is out there, and if we do not confront it, if it doesn't not reveal itself, what the hell is the website about. So we should send John Amaechi our support. It's when he needs us the most. Don't just post, be a soldier.

will

it has become quite tolerable to discriminate negatively against gay people. few people in this country would not dare to speak with such disdain against blacks, jews, latinos, women, etc. for fear of facing an incredible amount of backlash from social organizations, communities, and political leaders. however, it seems much less problematic to blast gays in such an insolent manner because many people see homosexuals as self-deprecating, loathsome menaces -- and they've got a couple of scriptures in the bible to attempt to make sense out of their nonsense! until gay people begin to prove to society to believe and see otherwise (just like the previously mentioned social groups have done over the history of this nation and other world communities), hardaway's vile, base, and ignoble thoughts will continue to be the basis by which gays are perceived and received.

Dre

There are several issues the Hardaway story reveals. Issue number one African-Americans can be and are just as bigoted as White Americans. I believe this is human nature. I am amazed that we think we are saints and that only White people are bigoted. Issue two as people pointed out Tim Hardaway obviously has gay issues within himself. Any real man would have no problem with a gay man since he 1-has no feelings for him 2-if the gay man approached him he would knock his gay ass out. Issue 3 is that people can not speak what they really feel and have to be PC. Firing him for his feelings is not going to change his feelings. Firing him will make him angrier as well as though that feel as he does. What the gay agenda needs to be is one of preventing discrimination not rehabbing bigots. Obviously those that feel as he does are prone to discriminate but that should be handled when and if it happens. We are in the same boat on the racial tip now. Someone can say all they want against us but they cannot discriminate.

Mitch

Sorry!

Where can I find these picures and videos, please?

Kwesi

"I HATE....PEOPLE" The fact that he said those three words in one statement is a serious problem that he possesses. God made us all. When you "hate" other people, are you not hating what He has created and in turn, hating Him? One thing my mother always instilled in us is that no matter what a person is or does, never HATE another human being. You can dislike their ways and actions, but never HATE. Hardaway is obviously lacking in home-training. And fortunately, those are the types of people - the ones who let their Freedom of Speech make them look vile and ignorant - that the American media loves to display.

jared

well, as one who has never heard of this jerk, all i have to say is he needs help, and needs to be canned. and until gay professional atheletes come out when they are playing, and not retired, his sort of bigotry will continue to be rampant. but, we have to keep in the context that he speaks for billions of people on earth who agree, and thats a sad fact. when you have the president of the usa gay bashing for a vote, it opens the door for all the homophobic fools to run wild.

lamarsoulangel

when I first read that of what Hardaway said on the radio ,and the fools who supports this kind of bigotry just made so angry .I hope this is a step forward not a step backwards for glbt to come out especially the younger generations to follow. This type of bigotry heightens suicide rate in gay teens.Brave people like amaechi have my full support. We all need to take a stand and support each other .to a lot of them we are a still a bunch of faggots ,sissies, queens, fairies.

MBSilver

Many Year ago I was standing outside a NYC leather bar one hot Summer night with many other men. A car full of young haters, who appeared to be teen males, sped by spewing their hatred out the window full blast "FAGGOTS!!!!" I heard a person standing nearby utter his take on the situation: The Person Who Screams Faggot The Loudest USUALLY IS!!! Like others here have commented if Timmy was secure in his sexual identity he would not be making such ignorant comments. It is more telling about him, than a comment on us!! It is 2007 and Stern did the right thing and I commend him for it! Hardaway's mistake probably will cost him millions!! It is time for some self respecting proud GAY NBA CURRENT PLAYER to blast out of the closet!!! This fool would love to rewind the video tape of his life just for one moment, but it is too late. Didn't he learn anything from the Michael Richards incident? Obviously not!!!

Kevin

I just read some of the responses on Fox Sports Blog. My brothers and sisters in the life, it is no wonder more people don't come out. Perhaps this is a great think maybe the fuel to the fire to finally get us out and protest. Black gays and lesbians are going to have to have our own "Civil Rights" movement or things will never change and only get worse. You should just see some of the comments on this blog...

If anyone wants to truly understand what vile, hateful remarks like Hardaway's can lead to, I strongly recommend reading Hitler's Willing Executioners, by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen. It won several book awards, and it remains, to this day, the most frighening book I have ever read. Goldhagen shows, in painful detail, how Hitler's Final Solution, (the mass killing of gays, Jews, and other "enemies of the state") was carried out by ordinary Germans, who eagerly ignored the laws of human conduct, and killed millions of their neighbors. It all began with words of hate.

That's why Hardaway's words have me so sick with disgust.

James2

Bobby - - I completely agree with your assessment. Whether it's direct hate (Hardaway) or indirect hate (Washington), it's all the same thing. The fact remains, in my opinion, is that when you use any word with rage, it's filled with pure hate. Washington should have gone ahead and said that he hates gay people as well. What's the difference between Hardaway and Washington . .the only difference is that Washington (although a little ignorant) wasn't as ignorant as to come out the mouth with such hate, but don't get it confused . . it's the same thing.

Sandy

Honestly, I heard the similar hate filled rants in my youth from family members and even in church. He apologized, so what. He said what he felt. Now he can go to a "rehab. program" for some enlightenment.

Mel Smith

If we have our movement of the 21st century, you guys must be ready to fight! I'm 26 and it don't look like there will be a movement anytime soon. Gay folks 25 and older don't do enough as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Bayard Rustin did in the past. Gay folks are scared of heterosexual people and that's the problem. I'm very nonviolent because I believe violence is ignorance. But I will defend myself by any means necessary.

nreeldeep

"As an African-American, I know all too well the negative thoughts and feelings hatred and bigotry cause," Hardaway said Thursday in a statement issued by his agent. "I regret and apologize for the statements that I made that have certainly caused the same kinds of feelings and reactions.

"I especially apologize to my fans, friends and family in Miami and Chicago. I am committed to examining my feelings and will recognize, appreciate and respect the differences among people in our society," he said. "I regret any embarrassment I have caused the league on the eve of one of their greatest annual events."

As an african-american, gay brotha, and human being, I have the utmost respect for Mr. Hardaway for displaying such courage and sensitivity.

As a child of God, I forgive him and wish him well.

Hamilton

Hardaway made those statements for reasons he should explain to the public. I believe it steams from something way back in either his childhood or adulthood, his problem. There is no apology needed here, the man said exactly what he wanted to say. I like people who state their truth instead of hiding it, now we know. Are we really shock at statments as such? We really shouldn't believe a lot of people don't think they way he does. You all know of someone in your family who feels the same way, and what do you do; you leave them the hell alone.

iPodder

Let the man say what he wants so that we can know for sure he's a fool. And a closet fag. A flaming, stereotypical fag. I guess Meech likes his MEN & turned him down...

Jay Leno had it right (not a direct quote): Don't be mad cuz your name souds like a gay pornstar's name, Mr. HARDaway.

john

i read his apology. i dont believe he could write it that well. i even dont believe he could spell his name correctly. he is just a street man who get well paid to work out.

nreeldeep

This incident will be in the wind and forgotten in a matter of days like the Michael Richardson "nigger" fiasco. Hear his name in the news in the last 2 weeks? Just like Keith's crusade to out allegedly closeted ministers. 2 weeks; forgotten. Mr. Washington of "faggot" fame? No longer in vogue.

And there are countless other "Gay Dilemmas of the Week" that are in fashion long enough for everyone to voice his unmitigated, brand new horror, before looking for something fresh to rant about.

It just struck me, when did someone admitting that he hated homosexuals become earth-shattering news?? I thought homo-hating had been in fashion for some thousand or so years!! Let all these brand new folk on this message board hoop'n and holl'n tell it, you would think Hardaway INVENTED homo-hating. Contraire' Mon Frere', that joint been out for a minute.

Rufus

I have to agree with nreeldeep, this wasn't earth shattering, he said what people say and feel everyday. it will be in the news for a few days, and he will be gone, and the same feelings he has will exist in his heart as well as most people. Instead of ranting and raving over this fool, somehow we as gays, have to learn how to educated this sort of moron. And, the gall of him to think that any real gay man would want him, NOT, always the ugly ones with issues.

Louis

Once again, everyone is flying off emotions. It's so a-typical for Black folks (straight or gay). We have been trained to act emotionally, and not develop true plans of action to address any issue. Banishing one person is not going to change a system. Let's all be realistic here. Society and institutions create these types of thoughts. Tim is just a small cog in the bigger perspective of what needs to be address. This man has no clout to hire, fire, or make a major difference in the lives of thousands of gay folks. Since David Stern feels the need to address this issue, let's Mr. Stern take money from the NBA to support various causes within the gay community. Has the NBA supported in gay intiatives, and more importantly Black gay initiatives? No. Until we challenge the systems and institutions that create an anti-gay thought we will constantly have comments such as Tim Hardaway's. I

snarkish Mcsnap

Mmmmm, mmmm, what a interesting sight, a Klansman who done been out in de sun too long.

Go back and read "Strange Fruit," Mr. Hardongay. You too could be one.

randolph

Tim Hardaway remarks were downright predjudice. Too bad he doesn't know theres a larger population of men that didn't come out the closet and that are bisexual then he will ever know. Gay people are in every walk of life. He sounds real stupid and ignorant. But that's his narrow minded opinion. He just sound straight up stupid and juvenile. He sounds like he has a 6th grade education. his dumb ass need to go to school.....

randolphbaker

I don't know where this NEGRO is from or where he went to school, but his remarks are typical of black men that I have been around that have had bad or em brassing experiences in their life. If you went to his family reunion you would find that he had gay people in his family.. He sounds like one of those men that like getting his dick sucked but thinks that he is straight and the guy sucking his dick is gay. He must live a miserable life...Pray for him...

Bobby

Often individuals are molded by the society in which they live becoming this way or that way. When you live in a society with distorted ideas and values many individuals in that society will adapt theses ideas and values. Not the indivdual homosexual but homosexuality, racism, sexism, racism, male chauvanism, prisonism, and gangism is often the by product of the kind of society in which we live. Hardaway, just like the homosexual, is not the problem! Its the society that produces us and them!

Mel Smith

See, people will never forget what Tim said. He said he HATES gay people. People don't forget sh!t like that in society. A lot of you guys suffer from a disease called self hate. I don't know how you could defend a dude that don't even want you to breath the same air as his. Let me put it in simple English: Tim will not care if you guys get run over by a truck. Sure I got some homophobic family members, but you can't defend what Tim said. He's a former NBA allstar and people respect him. He took it to another level. Hell, my straight brother was upset and he's 20 years old, and he said that he lost respect for Tim Hardaway. So, keep defending people who don't even want you in the same room with them. If you get gay bash, don't run to Keith and the rest of us for help.

jazzi

I also have to agree with nreeldeep, particularly the last paragraph of his first post. When you love & value yourself, the world is yours! The greatest love & acceptance of all comes from you. When we get over the "love me, accept me" kick, we'll be truely headed somewhere. I've learned that the only validation I really need comes from within, not from anywhere else & yes, that includes family & community.

I think many of us have been lulled to sleep concerning gay bashing. We think because we have Noah's Arc, Queer Eye, LOGO, Clik, etc, that all is well with the world. We foreget that no matter how far we've come, no matter how hard we try to prove ourselves, some people will always choose ignorance over enlightenment. That is a fact we're going to have to deal with. Look at all the achievements Black people have made in this country, before & after the civil rights movement. Has that done anything to erase bigotry? Do I even have to answer that question?

Tim spoke from the heart. He kept it real, as they say. It was a dumb move on his part because he should have known that there would be a backlash & that it wil more than likely affect his pockets but hey....at least now I know how he feels, so I'm at an advantage. Even if he is fired & looses all of his endorements(I think he should), so what? Ignorance will still exist. We'll still have to navigate hostile neighborhoods, dumb co-workers, & deal with that ghetto ass chick at the checkout counter at the grocery store. You can't fire everyone. You can't put everyone on blast because they said something stupid. If Tim & Isaiah can say what they said, knowing what the cost would be, then what does tell you?

titi

IN THAT CASE, DOES HE REALLY MATTER???????!!!

raskl

I remember his locker room video and I also remember that teenie weenie. He so fuckin pathetic.

Ernest Hopkins III

Completely unforgivable, Tim Hardaway shows us that racism no matter if its the skin color or sex, or even religion, how ignorant we can be. he should get counseling for his hatred, Its unacceptable, and being a Black man he should know what its like to be hated, and discriminated against. He seems to have forgotten that he is a minority.

Ernest Hopkins III

jaye

Funny, he wasn't so out spoken about his hatred of gay people when he was still playing pro-ball. Now that he's retired and no longer in jeopardy of losing his job...he's Mr. "I keep it real."

I guarantee this FOOL would not have made those kinds of comments to the press during the height of his basket career. Not only is he an ignorant jerk, but he's a coward on top of it.

Ron Lee

This story has no barrring on the average Black SGL individual; However, the murder of Mark David Norris of Philly should have us all pissed off and ready to take action. Black men are being murdered all over America and we can't get our Black leaders straight/Gay and everthing gray in between to do a dam thing on a National Level. Mark David Norris,Remember him he wanted all of us to live with self-respect,and love. Black men lets stop letting the media tell us who and what should be our issues. We are deing all over america and everyone is asleep.

akaison

I am not going to comment on the main story just the posters here because many of you are amusing:

a) the posters who create a backstory for the homophobe to in some way make excuses for him

b) the people who confuse free speech with silencing those who disagree with the haters. sorry, if you get to open your mouth. so do we.

c) the people who see this as about being black. i dont care what race this guy is- he's a hater. end of story

GQ

I saw the newscast and heard his comments. I'm wondering if in a couple of years, we will meet "Reverand Tim Hardaway." I don't know much about professional sports and because of that, Reverand Reggie White of the Green Bay Packers and his homophobic comments in the late 1990's came into my mind. Not only did he NOT apologize, he appeared in ex-gay movements ads and participated in anti-gay rights protests (as he said "in the name of stopping "sin." ) Sure he's lost a broadcasting career and his endorsement deals with Campbells BUT THE SCARY THING WAS that he allied with the homophobic black churches and eventually his legacy (due to my perception) was quite positive. Hell, he even ministered and protheletyzed (excuse my spelling) to many NFL players to follow his "religion and God" If you all know more and comment on this, then enlighten me. If i'm on the wrong track, let me know. I'm hoping that Tim might be open to some sort of dialogue with black gay organizations, but that will be wishful thinkin

Darryl

I don't know why in the world someone would go on radio program and let some stupid, ignorant stuff like that come out his mouth.Tim Hardaway has some serious issues he needs to deal with.Anyway i think the brother might be struggling with his own sexaulality, time will tell.

Carlos

con't... I think we can all agree that Mr. Hardaway is entitled (actually has the right) to his to express emotions and as do we with the same or greater contempt of him and his comments.

PS: Hate Speech is neither a Hate Crime nor a regular crime in the U.S. like in other countries. (Not sure, but I believe hate speech can only be used in criminal cases in the event that it is use to incite violence towards a person or persons) I believe there should not be any law enacted dictating a person’s emotions/thoughts or emotional response.

Ron Lee

What about Mark David Norris? Forget these rich Punks&Chumps.

Lorenzo

Mr. Hardaway obviously has some issues. I do not think that we should pay much lip service to his statements. The man does not appear to be very intelligent. He has very little respect for the Civil Rights Movement and does not seem to understand oppression.

I will leave this neanderthan with these words:

If you are neutral in a situation of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has his foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." -Bishop Desmond Tutu-

Tim, you do not have the luxury to be a homophobe. There are people out there that does it much better. In this case, ignorance is not bliss! Tim, you should receive the Nobel Prize for being the world's idiot!

reggie

I’m hot over this and nearly at the end of my rope! 1st we have that Isaiah Washington idiot now this! For me it is not a matter of free speech. I strongly believe in the right of free speech.

It is more than obvious that pea-head Hardaway has some problems but the problem is hardly his alone. I hold the black churches that preach homophobia while looking the other way while men and women die of A.I.D.S. around them.

The tired bromides and antiquated thinking in parts of the black community that says gay=white or black manliness is measured in the numbers of kids you have or in the size of your dick.

Can’t you see the bright blue line from men on the DL and this sort of thinking? It is getting late in the day for my people. We need to hold our black politicians, celebs, & athletes to the same standards we would hold anyone else. It’s getting late!

KennyK

I'm sorry, but when Michael Richards or whatever his name is said what he said about black people at the comedy club, I wasn't mad. It was tacky, but no reason for the man to be put on "social death row." I feel the same way about Hardaway. I don't agree w/ what he said, but freedom of speech gives him right to say it, using whatever media, and not having to apologize for it. As a matter of fact, he didn't apologize for how he felt, he apologized for what he said. Rehab wont change him, Michael Richards or Isaiah, and I don't feel that either of them should be put on public trial for their ignorance.
The best way to deal w/ your enemy is to smile in his face anyway and make him love you. Isn't that what we gay folk always esposing to everyone else...love cures all....but y hate on Hardaway for talkin' like the avg. brotha around the way? Hypocrisy is what it is.

DDC

GQ, you're right about Reggie White. The NFL Network just honored him this month as part of their salute to legendary black players. It was a touching and very flattering segment. His number was retired a year after his death, I believe in Philly, to much fanfare. Many football players/announcers, black & white, still speak glowingly of him. I have to admit I'm surprised that people in general turn a blind eye to his ignorance, since he didn't just insult gay people in that notorious speech, but ridiculed Mexicans and Asians too. And yeah after the story broke, Sportscenter interviewed him and he adamantly refused to recant his statements. I believe because he was so religious and had no on or off-the-field scandals he got a pass to be ignorant, like a Pat Robertson.

Simon G

If a white man had said that about black people there would be all hell to pay. They would be dropped by their sponsors and all kind of retributions would happen.

A (black) man says they hate gay people and no one really bats an eyelid. Talk about double standards.

This man is an insult to the sport.

BOBBY

I for one will not cast a stone at Hardaway. The scripture admonishes us in the story of the adulturous
woman: LET HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE. Was he wrong to use the word "hate"? Yes. Is it wrong to "hate"? Yes.

Mitch

Everywhere our black communities are very, very violent places where because of self "hate" and "gang" speech we destroy / murder one another every hour of the day!
Tim Hardaway is a clown, an example of the devastation and violence of the enslavement of black people in the U.S.A.
The late Reggie White's scandal is that millions of dollars for "his church's fire / arson" turned up "missing" and were never found; also, there was a scandal with drugs and prostitution involved with "that" church.

frank

Hardaway said that gay people have no place on the earth and, therefor e, no right to live. It's the same attitude that used to get young African American men lynched.

Shove your Bibles up your asses.

frank

For those of you who read my last post, I intended to compare Hardaway to a Klansman, not to endorse the actions of Klansmen.

ToddyEnglish

Tim Hardaway is weak. He has always been weak. That is why he never won a championship(inspite of his killer crossover, that was weak too). Who does he think he is, Michael Jordan? If he was Mike I might find it in me to care. But really, how can you be mad at this fool? That is like getting mad at a dog for not being able to juggle with all four paws. Atleast he has the audacity to be blatant about his views. His hollow apology aside I'm glad when I see people like him. It lets me know where I stand and I'll never support him or his dead end career.

Cadence

Calm down Simon G, lots of people have batted an eye. The NBA took him off of the all-star weekend events, and sent him back home. He's lost one endorsement deal, he's been trashed by sports reporters, and his last apology implies that he is feelig a backlash from this.

We don't need to play the silly game of who it's okay to discriminate against, or who has it worse.

Brian P

LOSER!

Is this what we got out of MLK's "I have a dream" spiel? It would seem that these black athletes are getting way out of hand these days with their comments. Clearly, Mr. Hardaway has forgotten what it's like to be in a hated minority of society.

How about a good ole southern-style lynching, you know, for historical purposes only. Hang Mr. Hardaway from an old oak tree, then maybe it'll jog his memory about issues of racism and equality?

:-\

Jeff

Well, now I know where my Tim Hardaway action figure is going...IN THE TRASH!!!!

Solo

All this passion over the comments of one retired NBA player. I wish all of you Black Gays would show the same concern when an unarmed blackman, like Sean Bell, gets gunned down in a hail of bullets by the police! Oh! Sorry! I forgot! Police brutality and racism aren't popular issues like gay rights! So many johnny come lately activits have jumped on the gays rights bangwagon, I am surprised it hasn't capsized yet! LOL!

eric daniels

Well after all this bile and hate for st8 black men who were at least honest about his opinion, I say just like Rush Limbaugh is him and Hardaway should be able to keep their jobs because we can all see what a bigot looks like. But instead the gay black community wants to do the same thing Black feminists want to do shut down one's right to free speech. If you want Hardaway or any other black male to respect your right to live, then you will either have to..

1. Out them in public
2. Tell other black gay men not to have dl sex with them
3. Out black celebs who bash gays and women
4. or be 'snow queens'
5. Use the power of the media and ban sexist, homophobic Hip- Hop

Now beware of the storm black gays and women will have to endure after your group ruins closted St8, or Bi black males careers in sports and music.

Solo

Alicia Banks! Maybe you should direct some of that venom at all the DL's out there who are responsible for the fact that Black women make up the majority of woman in this country who are infected with Aids!!! You should save some of your passion for the people who are actually out there infecting and killing your African sisters. If I had to choose who I have more of a problem with, a brother who speaks his mind or another brother who is feeding the Aids problem in the larger African American community, guess who I'll choose!

The hostility that is being directed at hetero Blackmen in these comments is proof positive of how this society as a whole hates strong, unbroken Blackmen. Blackmen who put their community and it's concerns, some would say it's very survival ahead of anything else. A Blackman who doesnt elevate a trival thing like what Mr. Hardaway said above the wholesale murder of Blackmen that is going on all over this country! The best friend the white community has are the gay blacks!

dashawn_07

I Hate Gay People? That sounds so familiar to me. I hear it after I have sex with a "straight" guy.

yeahisaidit

...@solo...how are you going to be at risk of being infected by men on the dl if you insist on not having sex with anyone without some form of protection?

Solo

yeahisaidit: What the hell is that suppose to mean gurlfriend? Us dumb hetros need clarification! Grammer, Mr. Yeahisaidit, Grammer! LOL!

yeahisaidit

...All I was asking was how do you lay blame on DL persons for hiv infection of Black women, if those women don't insist on the men they sleep with using some form of protection, (condoms etc..), as a prevention? Sounds like a straight forward question to me given the comment you made previously...and BTW I'm not trying to call you out by asking the question, I'm just interested in the basis for your views..futhermore you don't owe me any response, but I was just curious is all...please though, spare me the condesending grammer police routine and I'm not your gurlfriend...Dayum...

Solo

Sorry yeahisaidit, misunderstanding. Didn't get your meaning but clear now! To spite what u might think I really dont care abut who other people sleep with and I do believe in full equality, including gays, but there are some things I hear gays say, especially the white ones, that I have a serious problem with. Being Black I know a little about our history and when I hear gays make these casual comparisons between their experiences and ours, I have to shake my head in disbelief!

Mel Smith

Solo, if you love black history so much, I would expect BLACK FOLKS to be the last FOLKS, to talk about who THEY HATE. We suffered lynchings and dogs, now we are talking about we 'hate' someone in 2007? Hell, that is a insult to Dr. King and other blacks activists. It seems like YOU HETEROS are the only people making those gay rights and Civil Rights Movement comparisons. What, are you afraid of something? Huh?

William

Tim is a typical nigga closet faggot who needs to be put down like a rabit dog. rid our community of these down low phuckers!!!!!!

Mitch

Mr. Solo;

What's up with black on black homicide in our community! Your sermon should address why no other community is popping each other at the drop of a hat. How do we put an end to the violence? Many of our young, straight men are terrorists, killing or shooting innocent black people like you and me.

Hardaway checked himself, let him be a big boy and an example of how not to play in prime time. His money and diamonds are not every thing, you know.

edwin greene

Solo,
"the wholesale murder of Blackmen going on all across this country" usually involves HETERO black men killing other hetero black men. What are we black gays supposed to do to stop hetero black men from destroying each other?

Do you, as a hetero black man, care that 46% of black gay men (according to one study) in some American cities may be infected with the HIV/AIDS virus? Do hetero black men in general care about black gay men? You and I both know what the answer to that question is.

Solo again "The hostility that is being directed at hetero Blackmen in these comments is proof positive of how this society as a whole hates strong unbroken black men". How is Tim Hardaway saying he HATES gay people being a strong unbroken black man? You are scary, Solo!

Solo

Since my last comment some of you guys have made some serious generalizations about the entire straight black community. The kind of comments that you usually hear comming out of the mouth of a white person. Mitch thinks all str8 blackmen out there are terrorist and Edwin thinks we are all out there destroying each other. The logic used by these 2 people escapes me, if 46% of Black Gay men are HIV infected well doesn't that mean that Black Gay men are out there "destroying" themselves too. As for you Mitch, I think a little less cable news & a little more reading is in order! One other thing, since most gay men don't walk around with the word Gay stamped on there forehead, how do any of you know that that gangbanger standing on the corner "destroying" himself & everyone around him isn't gay? It would seem to me that the only dif between gay & str8 blackmen is str8 blackmen kill each other with bullets & the gay ones do it with HIV! I would rather take my chances with a bullet, that's survivable! HIV isn't!

Mel Smith

Solo, STRAIGHT BLACK FOLKS ARE ALSO CONTACTIING HIV THROUGH UNPROTECTIVE HETEROSEXUAL SEX. So, please don't become brainwash by the recent stereotypes of black gay people. Some homosexual people have safe sex and the same applies to straight people. See, I'm honest; I don't like most heteroexual black men because you play a role in our oppression. So again, I don't like you and I will tell you(heterosexual power structure) in your face! See, I don't have a problem with you disliking me for being a homosexual. I have a problem with you(heterosexual power structure) wanting to turn your dislike for me into legal discrimination. Now, that's why you have went too far and that's why I don't like you. I dislike you because I feel that I am oppressed by your kind(heterosexuals). Time Hardaway dislikes us for the same reason evil people hate us for our skin color, our religion, or our gender. That dude hates because he was taught to hate us.

Solo

Wow! Mel Smith where do I start? First I am a BLACKMAN, I am not now or ever have been part of a "power structure"! As 4 "Hetero Power Structure" u seem 2 think is all around u, as we say in the ghetto, negro plz. This country is currently being run by a government filled with gays. Maybe u haven't been paying attention for the last 6yrs or so but Condi Rice, Karl Roove and many others running the day to day operation of the Bush Administration are Gay! Not to mention the fact that the gay community as a whole is more wealthy and prosperous financially that the average. I am sorry that those "facts" dont fit into ur ideology but there they are. I also glad 2 see that irrational hatreds aren't exclusively the domain of Str8 people! Mr. Smith u and ur ilk can't complain about being hated when u do the same. That would make u a hyprocrite and who wants that?

Solo, I don't hate anyone. I hate WORLDWIDE oppression and DISLIKE people who use the system of oppression against me. Condi, Rove and all those individuals are sellouts to the power structure. See, when I say I dislike the heterosexual power structure, I am talking about the systematic discrimination against me in society. I also talking about the dehumaization/humiliation of me, by the heterosexual majority, because I have a different sexual orientation than the majority. I hate when other black people become victims of the WORLDWIDE power structure; black people who stereotype and refuse to help people in their communities. For example, a white heterosexual, conservative man, in my graduate class, screams about how blacks and everyone have opportunities in this country. But, he refuses to see and don't care to see, that people are still facing prejudice, regardless of opportunities. I'm irk at the silence of the 'uncle tom' blacks in my class. Those are my beliefs.

"I would rather take my chances with a bullet, that's survivable! HIV isn't!"

...now solo just F.Y.I. ('cuz I ain't mad at'cha) h.i.v. is not the death sentence it once was, with proper information, healthcare and effective medication it IS a suvivable and manageable condition...people now commonly live upwards of 25+ years after diagnosis, (this is why the political, economic, and religious quagmires that impede treatment and prolong ignorance is unacceptable)...please don't continue to spread outdated h.i.v. myths like it's still 1981 or some angry God's wrath...this is not to say this disease isn't a serious concern but to try and indicate that, just like many things having to do with a persons health, and indeed the quality of that life itself, it depends on effective management...so, there's no need for you to have to chose between a bullet or the virus man...

Solo

Hmmm! That would be right HIV is currently manageable disease assuming ofcourse u can afford the medications in the first place. Yeahisaidit some of what u said is true but there is one little detail that you left out. The drugs that are out right now don't work work for everyone and even when they do work over time the effectiveness of the drugs wanes! The tone of your comment is what would be called "slapping lipstick on a pig". Basically dressing up a grim condition with a lot of happy talk!

yeahisaidit

solo, what's wrong with understanding that reguardless of any situation one has to work hard to discover their options...the fact is more people are living longer lives in spite of being h.i.v.+, and that should be noted, as well as what can be done to avoid infection all together...happy talk? more like sensible talk...where there is a will there is a way to survive...I have nothing anything against your observations on this subject, I'm just trying to process your logic...are saying that suicide or some such method is the only solution to this virus? Of course not...that would be a slap in the face to countless folks who have had courage, faith and will to survive, (and for those that didn't, it's not then that they perished in vain), let that be known... and as for the tone of my comments it's not then to dress UP a grim condition, but to dress it DOWN...just so you know...

Solo

Yeahisaidit, I like u dude, u stick by your opinions! I respect that. I guess not being in the life means there are aspects of the gay experience that I will never fully comprehend!

Solo;

What do you suggest I read besides Keith Boykins every day? And, Solo, would you say self hate is the main disease plaguing our people?

Solo

Yes Mitch, self-hate is the main disease plaguing our people. Black people everywhere are consumed by it, unfortunately!

BOBBY

Something to think about.
On paper we are free. In reality very few of us are!
On the surface we live in a heterosexual dominated culture. In reality it is homosexual at its core!

JQ

I know this is a very serious topic, one which requires much thought and debate. For comic relief, here's a clip of someone taking a humorous stab at the whole matter.

Wow I was amazed by the comments of Tim Hardaway, not the fact that he dislike gay people but the tone and the feelings behind it. The word HATE is one that should be banned, you see if we accept it from Tim Hardaway about gay people, then the message received is it is ok to take it from other races as well. We ie.. African Americans experienced many many years of being hated because of our color, so lets try to end this vicious cycle.

Check out my article on the issue here Tim Hardaway - An Example of 40 Million Dollar Slave Syndrome.

I've seen Mr Hardaway's locker room videos - he does have a nice body even if he is a bonehead - what's more interesting is how comfortable he is in an obviously homoerotic setting (he and the other players in the video are in no hurry to get dressed or even to put towels around themselves - they enjoy being naked around each other)- this puts his comments in a different light! One player even strokes himself continually in the background and he doesnt seem to mind! Maybe he knows these videos are on the internet and that's what sparked his hostility (aside from him being a dummy)!

I'm not a fag, but I've met Tim hardaway and he hangs with some latent peter puffers I know. And when I met him he gave me a look that scared me. You cock smokers know that look.

George Bush hates black people. Tim Hardaway hates gay people. America is a wonderful god-fearing nation. Men who sleep with men are everywhere. Women who sleep with women are evrywhere. People who have brains like basketballs are everywhere. Tim Hardaway is stupid and irrelevant. Let's eradicate hate.

M.C.

this saddens me about black people. we as african americans have no right to discriminate against no one when to this day we are still being discriminated against and have been for 400+ years.
