The American Idol Awards

Thank God for the video recorder. Without it, I don't know if I could have made it through the entire 2-hour season premiere of American Idol last night. With the digital video recorder remote in my hand, however, I was able to fast forward past some of the most excruciating moments and really enjoy the kickoff to season 6. After an 8-month hiatus, Simon, Paula and Randy are back on the screen every week, and last night they added country singer Jewel to the audition panel.
But wait there's more. Simon announced last night that week 7 of the show will be "Abba week" (is that really necessary?), and later in the evening Diana Ross (who still hasn't seen "Dreamgirls") announced on "Late Night with David Letterman" that she will serve as an Idol "mentor" this year. It's all shaping up to be a very interesting season. So with all that in mind, I put together my very own awards for the best and worst of last night's audition performances...
American Idol Awards
- The award for "Funniest Moment of The Night" goes to... the woman who completely forgot the lines to the Prince song "Kiss" and then kept singing the whole song.
- The award for "Best Shakira-Charro imitation" goes to...
the Shakira-looking woman who could actually sorta sing. - The award for "Most inspirational story" goes to...
the black woman who overcame odds and made it through to Hollywood. - The "Rocky Horror Picture Show" award goes to...
the scary Goth woman. - The "kick-em-when-they're gone" award goes to...
the guy who waited until he left the audition room to "read" the judges. - The award for "So funny it's not that annoying" goes to...
the girl with the ponytails. - The award for "America's sweetheart" (female) goes to...
the tall blonde girl. - The award for "America's sweetheart" (male) goes to...
the young gay guy who called his mom after he made it through. - The award for "Lonesome Cowboy" goes to...
the lonesome cowboy. - The award for "Best Costume" goes to...
Apollo Creed meets Flava Flav. - The award for "Best Military Singer" (male) goes to...
the Navy guy. - The award for "Best Military Singer" (female) goes to...
the Army wife. - The award for Cracking Under Pressure" goes to
the woman who could only sing when her boss was around. - The award for "Vocal Coach of The Year" does not go to...
the vocal coach who couldn't sing. - And the award for "Best Singer" goes to...
the woman who sang "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (surprisingly enough).

I kept watching the show last night and kept thinking over and over "this is The Gong Show" all over again (those of us over 40 might remember that show). I did have several good laughs while watching this train wreck.
Tonights show promises to be a combination of the 1930's flick "Freaks" and a Fellini movie.

Ok, Keith, why the diss to ABBA? This is one black man who LOVES him some ABBA, everyone should! But, then again, I also like Elton John, pre-Disney and bad hair plugs!

ABBA is incredible. I thought everyone over the gae of 35 loves ABBA like I do. "Dancing Queen " is the song that describes gay life for many of us

Keith...you misunderstood Simon when he said that "Week 7 is ABBA week"; you must not have listened to the whole context....He was challenging a guy who was auditioning who was a "rocker" by asking how he was going to perform other styles of music; i.e. "what if?" week 7 is ABBA week?...he was basically telling the guy he'd never make it through the competition

yeah, the ABBA thing was definitely posed as a "what if?" situation...i don't think simon would make it through a whole ABBA night ;)

Do people really need to be so smug about it? "Genetic freaks"? come on! These are real people!

He set off my Homometer too, but are you sure that "Young gay guy" is gay?
As for freaks, wait till you see the Seattle show, although there are 2 women who are particularly impressive vocally (look for the one that sings "Because you loved me"). The sad part is most of the freaks were not even from seattle, but they all flocked there and now everyone is going to think seattle is some kind of giant attention-seeking freak show.

The thing non-necessary is your comment about Abba. Learn to know music man!
