Steelers Player Calls Opponent A Fag
By Keith Boykin, in sports

My, my, my. Haven't we learned anything this year? In the past few weeks, everybody from pop divas to gospel singers to football players seems to be stumbling over their words about gays. The latest foul is from Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who accused opponent Kellen Winslow Jr. of being a "fag." (Click on the image above to see the video.)
In the same week in which rumors swirled across the Internet that a major NBA player was coming out, Porter's words showed just why so few pro athletes have ventured outside the closet. "He's a fag," said Porter, refering to Winslow. "He tried to dap me up before the game. He's soft though. I don't pay attention to him."
When asked about a supposedly late hit that took place in the game, Porter said, "It was late. That's what fags do. He's soft. He wanna be tough but he's really soft. He tried to give me a handshake before the game. He's not my friend, he don't know me. What you trying to shake my hand for?...He talk too much and he hadn't done nothing...He threw a cheap shot. He's weak. He's for real weak. He's soft. He might want to play receiver because he don't want to play tight end...He's not gonna block nobody."

Joey Porter's agent said the outspoken linebacker regrets calling Cleveland tight end Kellen Winslow a derogatory name for homosexuals after the Steelers' 27-7 win over the Browns on Thursday night at Heinz Field.
Porter, upset about what he said was a late hit by Winslow on Steelers linebacker James Farrior, lashed out at the Browns tight end after the game.
"He realizes that he picked the wrong word," said Jeff Sperbeck, who spoke with Porter on Friday. "It was not intended to offend any group or anybody."
When asked if he thinks the NFL will fine Porter, Sperbeck said, "We don't expect them to."

he meant what he said and people know that. He called him a fag? Was he referring to someone who is homosexual as a fag? If not then whats the problem? Only fags get offened when they are called fags.

It never ceases to amaze me, that very public people such as in the case, and athelete, wants to bash gay folks . It sickening, immature, and just down right dirty..He things that he can make judgements, and remarks, such as he did, just because he is supposedly as "Successful Football Player"...what is that?

@Chicagoangel..
yeah Chicagoangel, I agree with you one-hundred percent.
Joey Porter meant exactly what he said, and knew Very well what he was saying about this man, and about SGL people. The statement was meant to be a "ONE-IN-THE-SAME" INSULT.

This guy is probably a 'fag'! Takes one to know one right? Hell the best player in football is gay. I know that personally!:)

How curious. As I read Keith's post complaining about some jock with a limited life exposure, a limited arsenal of words at his disposal, and no doubt no where near as worldly as everyone reading here using the word "fag," I see an advertisement to the immediate right for "RealJock: The smart site for gay jocks, queer athletes, and fit faggots."
There's also an ad for DList.com "like MySpace for fags but better."
Keith, you might want to see who's buying ad space before you post, eh?

All I have to say is that just like the whole worlds wants Michael Richards to make some sort of amends to the African-American community, So should Mr. Porter do the same to the Gay community. And where is Jesse Jackson calling a press conference to ban this word????

My take on it, he meant to say it, and its sort of ridiculous that he would get into the very homosexual terms that they use, tight ends and wide receivers, but, that's for the sporting folks to discuss. And, why is it that its always the most unattractive men who make these sort of ignorant comments? I'm surprised that he didn't start with those nonsensical bible quotes that these pick your sin to bash, usually gays, selodom drug dealers, and children born out of wedlock, black "celebrities" like to throw out. As far as being called a "fag" doesn't bother me one bit, loud, out, proud gay black man, so, no low class semi-literate hood rat with a few coins in his pocket now that he won't have in 10 years, can bring me down by saying it!

Keith, with all due respect, I understand that he (and the rest of the world) need some sensitivity training but giving this man the time of day is a waste of HTML. This would be more of a story if he were a politician or a man of the cloth, but an ATHLETE? Seriously? A HOMOPHOBIC ATHLETE is news? Honey, they are as common as opinionated bloggers.
I'm not trying to minimize the gravity of what he said by any means. But this fool ain't on my radar. I don't care what he says, that's HIS ignorance and HIS journey. If I thought I could fix him I'd give him the time of day.

If you play football on the field or on Playstation/XBox, then you will one day be called a "fag" by your opponent. Not that it is acceptible, but, people who come from "the hood" or the ghetto use different "derogatory terms of endearment" than most other folks.
Now in the big scheme of things, Porter should have used judgement and chosen a different word and that is why he should be fined for his looseness. You have to know when and where to say the right things especially in a professional situation. I don't think Porter is anti-gay, he was simply overheated and chose to stick to his roots by the way he handled it.
"Kellen is a fag!" = "Kellen, your game sucks-bitch!"
Cleveland Brown's Tight-End Kellen Winslow took his comment like a champ. And that is what should be highlighted.
Does Porter have a history of calling out fags, queers, or gays?

"people who come from the hood" or the ghetto use different "derogatory terms of endearment" than most other folks."
While I've never lived there, I don't believe "fag" is used as term of endearment in the hood or the ghetto. It is always a put-down unless used by other gay men. He knows that to call a man, especially a black man a fag is considered the ultimate in disrespect. That's why he said it. The sad thing is that the NFL isn't doing anything about it as to set an example so that it doesn't happen again. Keith, you must get tired. Fighting for gay rights and respect seems like a never ending battle which really ISN'T being won. The world seems to be getting more and more homophobic. It's really quite tiring.

Well, I'm not gay myself but I don't "gay bash" or spread hating in any way... but I really have to draw your attention to a couple of adverts on the side of this website...
Quote: "D.J LIST.COM: LIKE MYSPACE FOR FAGS BUT BETTER"
and
Quote: "REALJOCK: THE SMART SITE FOR GAY JOCKS, QUEER ATHLEATS AND FIT FAGGOTS"
O.K so to my point.
I think it would go a long way to stopping this kind of commenting if you would actually not use these terms YOURSELVES on sites like this...
This is falling into the same catagory as black people calling each other niggers and then screaming racism when a non-black person does it.
And yes I am a Steelers fan and a Joey Porter fan... but not for reasons like this... I simply like how he plays.
peace.

OK...There is no excuse for someone's behavior that is callous and uncalled for. No excuse at all.
Now, in terms of the ads, there are some people in the gay community who refer to themselves as being a fag. Without problem. I personally don't feel that way. But some guys like to be called fag, especially while they are having sex. Its like having kinky sex with a women who likes you to call her a whore. "Take that dick you little whore".....
I mean, you can't say if Porter was being anti-gay unless he has a history of being like this.
Then there is that area where certain people should not use certain terms. Like the word "Nigga". Many black people use the word when referring to each other. However, When Michael Richards used it, every black person felt like the white world was against them.
It is a touchy subject any way I try to look at it.
Could it be that Porter is showing that he was psychologically abused as a child, daddy called him a fag, as he puts his earring in his ear?

I found ironic to watch Joey Porter call someone fag while he putts on his earrings. Who are NFL players to make moral judgments against anyone? The Cincinnati Bengals are wife beaters. The Tennessee Titans are thugs, and the Dallas Cowboys can’t drive around town without crashing their cars or getting shot. I have seen Kellen Winslow Jr. and he is a fine man. His parents did a good job raising him.

Just because some gays call each other "fag", or some women call each other "bitch", or some blacks call each other "nigger" doesn't excuse the flippant and arrogant use of these terms by those who may not mean harm, but usually care less if they do end up offending people. If my brother playfully calls me "dumbass" from time to time, or even daily, that doesn't mean I want my neighbor calling out, "Goodmorning, dumbass!" when they see me. Did that make sense?
I think the bigger issue is why is weakness so easily associated with male homosexuality that grown men need to critique another man's lack of heart or skill, or cowardice, or whatever "weakness" by calling him fag? Wtf are you, fourteen? I'm sick of discussing bullshit like this.

Mark Norris: I am with you. Where is the outrage we saw directed at Richards? Porter should have to apologize as many times for what he said. Not just to Winslow, but to all of us. I predict this will be quietly swept under the rug, however, as yet another stupid fucking athlete is given a pass for being an idiot simply because he can catch a ball.
Porter is now on my shit list.

I guess there are people in the gay community who truly feel hurt behind these kinds of acts. And there is no way of easing that pain.
My dad used to call me a fag when I was around 10 years old and I had not even had sex with a guy yet. My mom is filipina and he is black. So the black community is constantly at each others throats to the point where they don't see how their actions affect other people.
I don't think any apology would heal this behavior. Fine him, sit him on the bench, but nothing can take away his troubled past which is why he is acting out like this today.
It starts at an early age. We can't change hard-headed adults, but we can set an example for the younger generations.

I'm looking at a man who has obviously been to a salon and had his eyebrows lightened. His beard appears to be shaped and defined with a pencil. I can't take this seriously, and no one should be offended just as no one should be offended when 50"pancake makeup"Cent says something homophobic. These same dudes are in the club every single night begging for blessings in the bathroom.
If anything it sounds like dude wants him.
"That's what fags do. He's soft. He wanna be tough, but he's really soft and delicate like one of these sexy females. He tried to give me a handshake before the game. He's soft, so silky. He might want to play receiver, yeah. I wanna f*** you f*** you, you already know."

Ok, fellas...you're reaching just a touch. In reality we know earrings and all this other silliness doesn't mean the brothers gay or hiding anything. It's just todays fashion. That just turns a valid complaint into silliness. The point it prejudice. This brother made a purposely derogatory remark that is used far too often today and he should be held accountable. If not him, then the NFL for allowing it to go unchecked. I suspect the reason he won't be fined is because most in those circles don't find the word offensive. They share the aame sentiment. NOT ALL, but most. There was a time that I looked down on the supposedly down low/closeted/it's nobody's business type brothers. I now understand why so many stay in the closet. I can see that for many coming out would cost too much physically, emotionally and financially.

December 10 2006, 10:43AM
Big dangly earrings, an inability to insult someone in a coherent manner, just another hood rat, and a not so pretty one at that. Winslow is a smooth kind of guy who has an "eduracation" and a clue due to a good upbringing, so, he will let this "man" with a poor self esteem, and issues with his own masculinty make a fool of himself and that's about it.
And, for Playboy, sounds like it was hard for you being a kid if your dad was calling you names, but, it seems like you have persevered and are living your life for you, which is a good thing, since many carry that sort of abuse into adulthood and have all sorts of problems from it.

...Ty...thanks. It was not easy growing up especially since my dad was black and I was this mixed light skinned kid with long curly hair. He talked bad about me and physically abused me too. I had to be strong at an early age and I learned early on that I was responsible for my own happiness.
Looking back, its hard to forgive him...we don't speak now and I don't know if he or my mom are dead or alive...but I wonder how could any dad abuse the kid I see when I look at my old childhood pictures.
I guess that's why I have issues with trust and true love. He was supposed to be the one person I could look up to but it was him who had mistreated me the most.

interesting, especially when use of the N word is the ultimate No. And i agree with that. Same for the F word. At the same time you can't equate the use by those of the respective communities. It has a very different power and purpose when someone outside the community uses it. So for all those who quote tha gays for using the F word, remeber the context. We don't get excited when those in the african american community use the N word, they have that right. Just the same the gays can use the F word as it relates to themselves--when it is used as a slur that is completely different.

I don't think it's a stretch. When someone makes it a point to say something of that nature, it says a lot about who they are. Some people will make their homophobia known. Others who's lives are in no major way affected by expressing that choose to remain silent.
There are a million things this man(standing there in his granny earrings and cotton candy pink colored thongs no doubt)could have said about this player, why that?

Well Kellen Sr is fine which is where Jr gets it. Anyhow, football players throw around the fag and bitch (azz) words like water when THEY'RE ON THE FIELD!! Joey made the mistake of using the word while having a mic and camera in front of his face (dumb & dumber while sos!!) And how ironic while putting on his earrings. I thought the wig and lipstick were coming next. I agree with Jabari who wondered why these players so easily equate weakness with male homosexuality to begin with. It takes a whole lot more strength to be black, gay, and out in this world than they can ever muster!! Personally I think many in the NFL are bi. So Mr Porter if you want Kellen there are much better ways of letting him know.

When Michael Richards made his racist rant I wasn't victimized because I CHOSE not to be. When Joey Porter called another player a "fag" I wasn't victimized because I CHOSE not to be. It's as simple as that. I have more pressing things to concern myself with.
I decided a long time ago not to RELINQUISH my power to another man in that manner. It's made all the difference in terms of my peace of mind.
By the way, the brotha WAS fined by the NFL to the tune of $10,000. That may not be much, but I bet the next NFL player who sets his lips will think twice because the fine will no doubt go up for the next offense.

I'm not offended by Porter using this word; I'm offended by his "apology" that it was ok because it was only directed at one person. So if I call someone a nigger, I can excuse myself because I was only directing this word at an individual?
Aside from that, he didn't mean to offend "nobody." What an imbecile.
