World AIDS Day

Watch video on black men

Today is World AIDS Day. That's the one day each year when we are all supposed to come together and appreciate the impact of the AIDS epidemic and rededicate ourselves to stopping it. Been there, done that. It's still a good idea, but it's not enough.

We can't stop the AIDS epidemic until we stop the lies that fuel the epidemic. That's why today I'm featuring the video (above) about black men. (Just click on the image to see the video.) It deconstructs some of the most popular myths about black men in America. One of those myths -- that there are more black men in prison than in college -- was actually repeated last year by the President of Harvard University. Is it any wonder, then, that so many others buy into the myths?

Another popular myth is that black men on the down low are responsible for the AIDS epidemic. The video discounts that assumption, and now new research by the CDC's Dr. Greg Millett helps to disprove this theory. The research, reported in this week's Gay City News, indicates that men on the down low are not the cause of the AIDS epidemic in black America.

New Research on Black Men and HIV

"Among the dozen explanations studied, three leading theories were ruled out by Millett's work. Significantly, the assumption of higher risk behavior among black MSM-as measured by unprotected anal intercourse, total number of sex partners, and commercial sex work-was not found to explain the differential in infection rates relative to non-black gay and bi men. This conclusion was based on a review of more than 25 separate studies," GCN reported.

Also important, self-identity does not determine risk for HIV. "Black [men who have sex with men] who don't disclose their sexual behavior compared to black MSM who do disclose their sexual behavior are less likely to be HIV-positive, they're less likely to engage in unprotected sex with more than five male partners lifetime, and they engage in less unprotected sex generally," according to Millett.

Millett's work was co-authored by John L. Peterson, Ph.D., Richard J. Wolitski, Ph. D., and Ron Stall, MPH, and published in the American Journal of Public Health.

World AIDS Day Events

Meanwhile, if you are looking for activities to do today to recognize World AIDS Day, the people at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have put together this list of events across the nation. This is not an exhaustive list. It is just a sampling of some of the many things going on for World AIDS Day.

Great Video! It reminds me of a great book called DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. This well-researched book debunks plenty of myths about the African-American race.

Keith, we enjoy your reports and commentaries,so much. Your reports, and information that you share, provide us with insights, that will last a lifetime.

playboyadonis[TypeKey Profile Page]

Well put together. And I noticed there was no rap music playing in the background, just real facts. I know I have heard all of these myths. What can you do the next time you are sitting through a ceremony where the host is telling these kinds of myths to the audience? It happens at every event I attend.

Thanks for your tireless research of World Aids' Day Events. I wish somehow you could have posted these a week in advance. I didn't know about world AIDS day until 2 days ago, as you know I am just starting to champion the cause.

Is there a World AIDS Day Parade like the ones we see on Thanksgiving? Not another gay parade type of scene but one where the floats express the facts and offer blunt images into the realities of why the world needs 365 World Aids Days.

ALLEGRO

Keith....

While I never cared for Larry Summers, I dont see the need to single him out when he's not the only public figure to have openly exclaimed that inaccurate statement. I mean I heard Jesse Jackson make the same statement in New york at a press conference attended by Mayor Bloomberg, the Chief of Police, Congressman Rangel, and several other NY black political officals. This was on the evening news.

chris-leo

keith boykin,

you are a national treasure. i hope you know that.

Robert

I've been trying to debunk some of these among my own circle of friends (and FOAFs) for some time now. Thanks for putting all the stats in one easy to find and reference area!
Reminds me of one of my husband's aphorisms "Figures don't lie, but liars figure."

chris

EVERYBODY GOT A DAYUM STUDY!IT STILL REMAINS A FACT THAT MANY BLACK MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH OTHER MEN ARE NOT BEING HONEST WITH THE WOMEN IN THERE LIVES.YOU CAN GO ON ADAM4ADAM,MEN4NOW,BLACKGAYCHAT AND MANY OTHER SITES AND MET MARRIED MEN,MEN WITH GIRLFRIENDS AND MEN ON THE DL.THE DL IS STILL A MAJOR BRIDGE FOR HIV TO THE BLACK HETERO WOMEN.THE PROBLEM IS MANY BLACK MEN DONT FEEL ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THERE COMMUNITY.

castiron

You're right, Chris. Also, we need to forget about black men who live on the down low. The fact remains that blacks are exposed to hiv more than any other group in America. Look at the CDC's report that came out today. The down low must play some significant role in this disproportionately high hiv rate, but surely there are other factors for this problem in our community. We can't blame it all on the media and on myths.

To blame it all on the media is the exact approach that G.W. Bush used to defend his position on the war. Now that the situation has devolved into a civil war, he and his colleagues must admit to themselves that there were problems other than the media, myths and liberal democrats.

My diatribe is simply meant to say let's take personal responsibility and admit that we black people might have something to dow with black people contracting the virus.

Mitch

Bush squandered, wasted huge critical resources on his FAKE Iraqi war; resources which should have been used in the fight against AIDS! Let history show him as a weak, incompetent leader, especialy in the war against AIDS. We can defeat AIDS, but it takes the kind of resources the fiasco in Iraq attracts. Be vigilant in the war against AIDS!

forreal

While I appreciate you shedding light on the myths I think the facts need to be addressed with a much greater urgency. They are just as, if not more, grim.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/hsn/20061201/hl_hsn/usblacksseekanswerstoaidsepidemic

will

I don't think that anyone can argue or question that there is a problem in our community when it comes to our black men being honest about who they are. But I agree with Keith that there are other factors to play into the rise and spread of HIV/AIDS that everybody is overlooking: like why are soooo many straight women most who are pretty knowledgable concerning STDS still allow men to sleep with them without using protection. There has to be accountability all around the table. There is also drug use-sharing needles, babies born with the illness, there needs to be a breakdown of these statistics to enlighten all of us of the issues that we are facing. There is a internal part of us that is not healed and causing us to make dangerous decisions.

Steve

Love the movie - it's long overdue. But those who make the case that AIDS is a big problem, regardless of the myths have a strong point. We can make the case for both.

Steve

forreal: Thank you for that link. The article really defines the collision of two different realities that we all need to face.

playboyadonis[TypeKey Profile Page]

When we begin to see every possible format as being a major contributing factor, we will be able to devise a much necessary plan to free ourselves of the myths and provide the knowledge that keeps people properly educated about this issue.

Media is not entirely responsible; media plays a significant part and we have to recognize the potential impact media has, can have, and will have. For instance, media can offer the truth similar to the way political ads are played during voting seasons. When there is wrong information released into our body of knowledge, have these [black] media giants issue ads that put the record straight. Not slinging the mud, but a campaign that clears the mud away.

What truly matters? It's not the numbers! It's the reality! It's not how many thousands, it's devestating if its only a single one.

What can we do? Add a 10 second challenge to fight the cause on that weekly radio show we host, in the daily podcasts we record, or during the ending of the local tv shows we host...

Ty

As one who has seen quite a few dear friends die of this horrible disease, it is still very annoying to me that it is still spreading like wildfire in the black community, and for no real good reason. The excuses that are used as to why it is spreading is getting old and someone needs to figure out a way to get to this group that seems to have no clue. I for one don't have an answer, but hopefully there are some people out there thinking of a way to reach this so called dl crowd. I still don't see why it is spreading with black men who are on this dl thing, and not among other groups of men who are doing it as well. Maybe being over 40 has me weary of hearing statistics, when everyone knows the spread of hiv can be stopped with one simple thing, a condom, which it seems black people are afraid to use and I for one just can't figure out why.

Alexander

You guys need to check out some of the writings of Farai Chideya. She brings up a lot of similar things and she speaks in a today generation voice.

Keith this is why I love your site, you speak the truth with conviction and passion. Even I was fooled by some of those myths. Where can we get the numers?

Beta9

Ty, may I ask if your friends were receiving any antiviral therapy drugs or HARRT?

This whole myth about black men down low or up swing spreading disease has been the nations policy of discrediting African people since we’ve been here. Have we become so mistrusting of each other that we will swallow any pill our so-call health officials will dish out to us?
Of all the limitless white porn sites, clubs, and sex-parties, drug-parties, and wanton sexual practices of many white gay males; it's a mystery how we’re told their numbers are droping, when in many cases, black people don’t engage in half of the promiscuity that many white males do. Has the report been put out that the majority of most bi-sexual white men, engage in more down-low activity then black men? But you see; that never made it on Oprah.
Olympic Gold Medalist Lee Evans puts it in a make-since perspective:
http://barnesworld.blogs.com/barnes_world/2006/11/lee_evans_back_.html
Thanks

Chris

I wonder how much of a factor lying is in these stats. Surely some numbers are exaggerated by males or females being embarrassed about not using a condom, so they say they did anyway. I don't see much other reason for 99 percent of black people knowing unprotected sex can lead to HIV, yet 46 percent get it anyway. Unless it's just 46 percent of gay black males that get HIV; that's different, but I think it included all black males. Regardless, something isn't being told. It's just an issue that only time will tell the wiser. I'm sure no one considered the crime rate decrease in the '90s was due in large part to Roe v. Wade.

Ty

Beta9, most of my friends who have passed were sick at the beginning of the epidemic, when the drugs were so strong, that you got sicker it seemed by taking them. I have to admit, that with the advances that are available nowadays, you don't see the wasting away we did 25 years ago, and the horrible side effects like blindness that one of my friends got or the sarcoma that was so rampant back then.

And, I agree, I have often wondered if these so called "statistics" are right, if we are to believe them, and not just about HIV, every disease known to man has blacks on the short end of the stick. But, then again, I'm one of those who does not trust one thing that the USA government says.

Beta9

Okay Ty, and thanks for the response. So me, it was evident that the AZT was the contributing factor in people dieing, and what we thought was the picture of aids, was in reality, the picture of the chemo-drugs given to these men. Here's something else I've been comtemplating on: It has now become (according to the health officials bias reports) that hiv/aids has become Black peoples problem: this is all based on a test that cross reacts with the thousands of antibodies in the body of black people that’s being mislead in to being told that these friendly antibodies is a virus. How this went from being a predominate disease of white gay males to then suddenly becoming a black gay and DL male problem is totally unexplainable. Black males don’t and never have participated in a quarter (less then that) of the wanton gratuitous sexual and extreme drug practices as their white counter-part. Not many black gay men are willing to allow someone to fist them with a smother hand of Crisco Lard, nor inhale large

playboyadonis[TypeKey Profile Page]

When I first started to acknowledge the RED campaign, which was only about a month ago, I felt that there was some kind of racial barrier. I thought to myself: "Impossible. How can something so deadly be argued as a black or white issue".

After following this topic at keithboykin.com I see that the barrier does exist. Instead of helping the people that are hurting and dieing, we help ourselves by adding to the political debate of AIDS.

I hope that when I become more active in this cause, I will not allow myself to become diverted in my efforts. Let's depart from the political debate and resume the work of the vision. I want to learn more about the acts that help cut away at this thing. I want to read more about the efforts that are making a true difference.
============================
STOP THE SPREAD....PLEASE USE A CONDOM

Ty

Beta9, you bring up a valid point when it comes to getting freaks on and who the govn't says is infected. Some of the white guys I know have had sex with the population of many small towns and are negative, and into some freaky stuff that makes my stomach churn when they have told me about it. I have wondered if there is something in the virus that affects blacks different? Some will say that there is no such thing as a racial element to disease, but, I think there is. Even when it comes to smoking, there is some gene that makes blacks more prone to cancer than other groups who tend to smoke more. And, I also think that the fear factor is in place as well, tell young black men and women they are going to get infected, or are at a higher risk than other groups, and there are many ill-informed people who will fall for it. My take on it is that its going to take black folks to break it down and keep it real, since one infection is one infection too many as we head into 2007.

deejay

Whether or not HIV is spread by brothers on the DL or by sisters who don't use common sense or protection, it appears to me that no one wants to change their behavior with respect how they get their groove on.

Therein lies the problem for folks.

To do so would require some heavy lifting in the form of of self-evaluation about healthy sexual expression and self-esteem, not to mention personal responsibility.
Unfortunately, that's a tall order for many people whose
sense of worth is dangerously intertwined with having sex partners

Statistical myths notwithstanding, I conduct a personal poll on the state of black men by simply using public transportation through an increasingly gentrifying urban center. Myths or not, brothers ARE under siege, and it begins in our communities.

I agree with that Deejay brothers and sisters whether this is lies or not need to find healthier sex pratices period. Sex does not always mean penetration. There are other ways to exchange in safer sex.

Just a question, since when did the number of black men in college out number those in jail. When did this happen...I cannot recall being in a coma!

G. thank you for calling out another myth about black men. You see, this whole DL thing and blacks being the hightest rate plays right into the predominate white American concept: Black men are over sexed heathens that are the cause of spreading disease around the globe, and black people (unconcious of this) play right into this belief. This stems back to savage black man who will rape you and spread disease, which stems by to the European early concept of Africa , The Dark Conteniant that needs Tarzan to control them. Once black people start taking control of their lives and stop allowing others to determine their fate, then, healing begins, and you can give them back their disease and lack.
Whether or not hiv, my question is; you being a creation of God and God being with you, and you then being God, why do you allow something to be so much greater then yourself, if you say God is great. Is hiv greater then God? Are you willing to forego what you've been told about hiv, and focus on people living?

More methods I will employ during the course of this week:

1) Add verbal reference to preventative actions and HIV/AIDS phone hotline numbers at the end of my work and mobile phone voice mail messages.

2) Put links to HIV/AIDS prevention websites at the footer of each of my work and personal email messages.

3) Be prepared to pass out health-care-packages at random and keep information readily available in my office.

Keith really is sexy... but that's not why I am here.
World AIDS Day with free rapid testing and counseling in most major cities witnessed such low turn-out that you begin to wonder why bother. We are suffering from "prevention fatique" and do not realize that safe sex is a myth.....

deejay

the low turn out could also be a symptom that folks prefer NOT knowing...
