It's Official; Allen Concedes;
Webb, Democrats Declare Victory;
Clean Sweep of Both Houses
Two days after the November 7 midterm elections, Virginia's incumbent Republican Senator George Allen finally conceded defeat this afternoon in the contested election against Democrat Jim Webb. Democrats immediately seized on the moment, declaring victory in the Senate. Later in the afternoon, Jim Webb held a victory rally and thanked the people of Virginia for electing him.
"The people of Virginia have spoken . . . and I respect their decision," Allen said in his speech in Alexandria, Virginia. He also said he had called his opponent to congratulate him. As of the most recent tally, Webb led Allen by 7,231 votes with almost 100 percent counted.
Meanwhile, in a related story, CNN reported that Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman is all but certain to resign. Mehlman has been the subject of controversy on several blogs recently for providing ambiguous answers to questions about his own sexuality. And just last night, CNN reportedly deleted a portion of Bill Maher's appearance on the show where Maher talked about Mehlman's sexuality.

woo hoo! one thing this proves is that the racist ideals of the gop and the nerve of a politician like allen to not even try and hide it, is they had better watch out for the changing demographics of the u.s.a. since that crowd of asians, hispanics and blacks mixed in with the whites is what america is all about, freedom and equality for all. now, allen can go back to his favorite pastime of civil war re-enactments and pretending he is living in the "good old days" as a non-jewish fellow who has a penchant for nooses and the confederate flag.

Welcome to the REAL Virginia, Sen. George "Macaca" Allen.
Unfortunately, this fool still received over a million votes and almost won despite his racist antics. Va. has a long way to go, but it looks like progress is being made because of new people moving into the Old Dominion who aren't part of Virginia's racist, redneck history. Over 400,000 people moved into Northern Virginia since 2000 when Allen was first elected Senator. Many are Asian, Hispanic and many are highly educated government and tech workers. There is a large gay community in Arlington and Alexandria that was motivated to vote against the anti-gay marriage amendment on the ballot. Most of them came from out of state and find Allen's old school racist attitude offensive. Those voters in Northern Virginia, combined with Black voters and other Virginians who aren't part of the good old boy club turned the mother out!

Gay leaders on Thursday canceled a parade in Jerusalem amid security concerns and pressure from fundamentalist religious leaders who called such a public display in the holy city offensive. The Gay Pride parade scheduled for Friday drew opposition from Jews, Christians and Muslims, while hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews vented their disapproval by clashing with police and burning trash bins in the streets several nights over the past week. Rabbi Yosef Elnikaveh, a prominent religious leader, has said allowing the parade to proceed was surrendering to "mental illness." Top Muslim leaders said homosexuality is a crime and demanded police punish those involved in the parade. Efforts by the gay community to win approval for same-sex marriage, a key issue in the U.S. and Europe, face a major obstacle in Israel's rabbinical authorities, who hold a monopoly over Jewish marriage and divorce. Secular groups have been fighting to get a law passed in parliament permitting civil marriages.
