Did Terrell Owens Try to Kill Himself?

Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens may have tried to take his own life this week, according to police reports. Owens, who is perhaps the most recognizable and colorful figure in professional football, had to undergo surgery last week in his first season playing for Dallas, only months after being traded from the Philadelphia Eagles.
A police report released Wednesday morning said Owens told a friend "that he was depressed." The friend noticed that Owens's prescription pain medication was empty and then watched the football star put two more pills in his mouth. The friend reportedly attempted to pry the pills out with her fingers. Later when Owens was asked by rescue workers if he was attempting to harm himself, he said "Yes."
Owens had been hospitalized late Tuesday because of an allergic reaction to pain medicine he was taking for a broken hand, according to his publicist. He is recovering from a broken right hand he hurt a week ago Sunday. He had an operation the following day to have a plate screwed in so the bone would heal without being further injured.
As we've said before on this site, suicide is a serious issue. Even people who we think are "cocky" or successful still suffer through bouts of depression from time to time. Owens himself may have been experiencing depression following his hand injury. After struggling to make a new name for himself as a Cowboy, he may feel the pressure is on. Sometimes we put more pressure on ourselves than the people around us do.
Whatever the case, whether you like T.O. or despise him, this is apparently a moment of trouble for him. We may talk trash about him again in the future, but for now we wish him well.

Thanks Keith for the update. That's why I make it a daily practice to look at your site (several times a day) because you are a brother that stays on top of all the news and happenings. My prayers goes out to Mr. Owens and his family

Looks like the pr machine is at work already. Now the "suicide" attempt is being downplayed. If the attempt was real...where is the line drawn from protecting someone's public image to getting them professional help. Is it ok that this is getting swept under the rug versus him going out there like nothing is wrong and perhaps this happening again. T.O. has exhibited signs of some emotional instabilities in the past. Where's the intervention to help this brother?

Once again PR machines are rolling and the press might have a field day- am I the only BIGGEST T.O.fan and brother who sees that this brother needs help. And yes, all of us would love our lives to be protected, or personal health info- but, this situation any baby can decipher that something is going on. Are they going to wait until he does something real deadly, or is dead before they take time out to get my brother on track? We all have our issues to deal with - some more than other.
But, no matter what people say of T.O. him been cocky, flamboyant, arrongant, or whatever terms they use that may seem appropriate. No one is helping with his situation by making it worse.
Yes, he needs prayer and we all do. But, just don't pray for him now, pray for him forever. We tend only to pray for people at times when they are in the doldrums but we need a basis of faith and spiritual healing

I hope and prayed that this morning when I read the news online it was not true. I wondered to myself T.O. having gone through last years from the Eagles to the Cowboys, and not to mention the fact that Bill Parcells seemingly not too happy with him in Dallas.
And Kim Etheredge [the publicist] and also the 'friend' who was present at the time of the incident........and the list goes on. Well, we will see where this saga takes us. Oh, what tangle web we weave............!
I just hope that T.O. can step back, look at his life, the people in his life - and some may need to be CUT OFF?CUT OUT. And pray to God that is he did try to commit suicide and it never worked, then obviously God has a plan for him on this earth. And he just need some help, the "RIGHT" help.

As an Eagles' fan, I've made a few smart remarks about T.O. since he went to Dallas. Ofcourse, none of us could've known he was in such pain, or under intense stress. Part of being "manly" in this culture is not to show vulnerability, not to reach out for help, and to hide your pain with macho bravado. That shit don't always work. If a man in pain doesn't hurt someone else he may hurt himself. Even a "real" man who's in real pain, needs to tell somebody about it.
I hope he's all right and returns to the football field. And we still gonna' whip the Cowboys' asses (I know what y'all saying, "yeah, right, just like your wimpy Eagles whipped the Giants").

Well I believe him and just because he's a celebrity doesn't mean he's hiding anything either. It could've happened just like he said and his publicist could have been over-reacting. And why is this always a saying "where is the line drawn...."? We need to draw a line with our own lives first. I doubt anyone on here knows this gentleman personally so how do we know if he is or isn't depressed. He maybe and he may show signs but we don't know so until then I'll believe him until I know otherwise. I hope he does seek help if there is some needed. Hey, things aren't always what they seem.

Terrell Owens may be under tremendous pressure to perform with the Dallas Cowboys. Sure, he has a $25 million contract, but money isn't every thing. I believe he IS depressed because it seems like every one is watching to see how well he does.
I hope he is not to the point of trying to commit suicide... I hope the suicide attempt reports are false...

Well, It is clear to me that T.O. tried to kill himself. When a doctor or medical service provider of any kind asks you have you tried to kill yourself, you never say yes unless you really really feel scared that if you don't say yes you Will Be Dead. I know this personally because I tried to kill myself in March of this year. I was sucessful to the point that I spent 5 days in a coma with round the clock double dialysis until my heart stopped three times and the doctors pronounced me dead. Fortunately my lover had our bishop from church there, and he would not accept my death. So he annointted my head with holy oil and willed me back to life. I came back. I am now trying to put my life back together knowing I succeeded in killing myself and wondering whether it was a good thing that I lived or a mistake I have to correct later. What I do know, is that a brother like T.O. would never say yes unless he knew what I knew...that sad, empty feeling where you really do not want to live or die. Pray for him and me.

this brotha is addicted to drama and chaos. he has this big money making machine around him and he doesn't know how to stop the to machine. the machine doesn't care about him, just the fact he is making money. we can look at all the athletes that machine has taken out, look at any football or basketball player. shoot you can write a book off mike Tyson alone.

This much is true. He thrives on attention and being controversial.
He is another Dennis Rodman
But then, there is a lot of drama going on with the Cowboys.

LET'S US BE SENSITIVE, THIS IS ANOTHER TORMENTED BROTHER LIKE MANY OF US. WE OFTEN NEGLECT THAT THIS IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN JUST MONEY AND FAME.

When my boy texted me with this news my first thought, and text response was, "Terrell Owens is too arrogant and cocky to commit suicide. This is either a publicity stunt or the media running with a rumor."
People who try to commit suicide and don't succeed normally end up in the hospital, not at a news conference the next day, cracking jokes and looking healthy and happy. People who are in love with themselves don't commit suicide. These rushes to judgement are ridiculous. Now everybody feels silly now that T.O. has spoken. Make sure you have all the information before you make a decision about something.

Yall need to leave T.O. alone. This was a story that just got WAAAYYYYY OUT OF HAND. Yes.....he is human...and can hurt just like anyone else. But I just don't believe that he tried to commit suicide. He's the kind of person I believe would HURT SOMEONE ELSE first before trying to inflict harm on himself.
LEAVE HIM BE!!!!

You're rarely, if ever, released from a hospital the same day of a suicide attempt. In a lot of states, you have to be held for up to 72 hours - Bebe Moore Campbell wrote about it in her novel "72 Hour Hold". So I call BS on the suicide attempt, and DINGDINGDING! on the drama.
