Janet Returns

A few weeks ago we asked if Black America had forgiven Justin Timberlake for the way he dumped Janet after the Super Bowl controversy. It turns out Janet hasn't forgotten about that incident, although she's not dwelling on it either. When asked about Timberlake, Jackson told Winfrey: "We haven't spoken but I consider him a friend, and I'm very loyal, and friendship is very important to me. He has reached out to speak with me. Like I said, friendship is very important to me - and certain things you just don't do to friends. In my own time, I'll give him a call." In other words, he called but she didn't answer.
Jackson also expressed her frustration with the public media outcry over the nipplegate fiasco. "Many more important things were going on in the world. And the focus was on my breast? That didn't make any sense to me."
She's right. In February 2004, while the Federal Communications Commission and the right-wingers were busy stirring up trouble about Jackson, they weren't talking about the war in Iraq, the increase in poverty in America or the rising numbers of Americans without health insurance. Instead, the conservatives used a classic diversionary tactic they often employ to focus on controversial wedge issues that pose non-existent threats to America. So of course they focus on Janet Jackson's breasts and what they call "gay marriage" (marriage equality for gay couples) instead of talking about jobs, health care, education or the war.
Janet is right. It's fine for us to sit back and discuss the Super Bowl incident, but let's not lose sight of the bigger picture. Janet Jackson is not a threat to American values or American society. It's the fat cats in Washington who threaten American values. They want us to argue about Janet so we don't argue with them about high gas prices, underfunded schools and the failure to find Osama Bin Laden. So next time somebody points the finger at Janet, point the finger right back at them and talk about the things that really matter.
Thanks for putting it all in perspective Janet.

Yes!!!!!! She is back and better than ever ! I picked up my deluxe edition copy of 20 Y.O. last night and it was everything that I expected and more. I have no doubt that this album is going to do extremely well on the charts and on radio. JD, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis have completely re-invented her sound while staying true to their formula for her success in the past. Go on over to loldarian.blogspot.com to see my video of last night's release here in Atlanta. All of those haters will be eating their words when she debuts at #1 dethroning that chick from Houston, what's her name again?

That gotdam Janet Jackson is flawless to me. She looked so good on Oprah, that bitch looked like a hologram she looked so good. And her wig/weaves are the best in person I might add...only a couple of bags of hair..LOL. I luv me some Janet, any girl that can make Jermain Dupri look good is a genius....you go girl.

Following Janet Jackson's logic, perhaps there shouldn't have even BEEN a Superbowl considering Iraq, Bin Laden, gas prices, etc. Why then is she promoting her album? Have those things been resolved? Just answer the damn questions without the indignation. You flashed your tittie on screen and didn't want anyone to talk about it. It became big because Janet is big, a celebrity not her breasts. If Sheniqua Jackson fromm Shaker Heights did it it would not have made the news or been addressed by the FCC. She chose the biggest television day in the world to flash the nation. I don't buy for a minute that it was an accident. I believe she and Justin planned it, hence the enormouse nipple decor. I am so sick of thes stars who can't wait for the public to know who they are and make them famous and rich but when they do something unpopular they want a normal reaction. Shut up and go sit down somewhere! She DOES look good though!

September 26 2006, 1:15PM
Janet has gotten over the tittie fiasco, so why can't we....stop hating! With or without our stamp of approval, the bitch will still be great, great great...I celebrate, not HATE! Go head Janet, do the gotdam thang girl...no hatin over here...so what if she lied, we all lie got dammit. So what if she may have did it for reaction, we all do and say shit for reaction, just read some of these comments. She human just like the rest of her..Leave Janet alone, mess with somebody else, girls..

Love me some Janet Jackson and enjoyed seeing her on Oprah's show yesterday. She is REALLY in love with Jermaine and appears content.
But how in the hell did Iraq and Osama Bin Laden fit into this piece. Does everything have to be politicized???
Jason
September 26 2006, 1:58PM
Hell Yeah GS... Everything is political to a certain extent!
As for Janet you I concur. THE WOMAN LOOKED GOOD! She still got ass too... I LOVE IT!
She comes off so humble...

that kind of thing,...I would be Mr. Janet Jackson in

Janet's tit ain't political news. She and Justin should have had their asses spanked for that crap (Justin got away with it and lied his tail off) Like she said yesterday....move on.

20 Y.O. is easily Janet's best album in years. It's just good old fashioned fun. So throw that Super Bowl crap out the window and enjoy a master at the top of her game.

I'm really praying that this CD is a big success for her, because she deserves it. I've been a fan/admirer of Janet since before the "Control" album. Janet is back now, bigger & better than ever!

I purchased several copies of the CD, and it's absolute fiyah! I also thought Janet represented herself very well on Oprah, and she looked very good, and performed very well, both "Nasty" and "So Excited." I don't know what's so hard to believe about her SB explanation. It makes plenty of sense that she intended to show a little(which fits J's previous performance instincts)but ended up showing more than what was planned. The fact that some people think she's lying says more about them, than it ever will about her. In any case, I just want this project to do extremely well for her, as she's our lasting standing major black icon, who can still compete with the young uns, with the one exception of Prince.

Great article. I totally agree. You can say what you want about the incident, but it did not warrant all of that attention. Good luck to Janet on this CD.

The last paragraph of the article was the best summary of the whole fiasco. Janet was used as an excuse to put people mind off of real issues at hand, people failed to realize that T&A has been shwon on television for years and not by accident on soap operas and other television series that come on at least once a week and not once a year, and not only that I think the focus was on her because she is ethnic, female, and a Jackson.

Right on Keith!! I couldn't agree more with your perspective and I'm so proud of Ms. Jackson for maintaining her dignity and not backing down from her position.

I ain't hatin' on nothing but her explanation. I didn't drum up her breasts again, the article by Keith did as did Miss Oprah. I said she looked good. Just spreading love.

Is it true that MTV will not play any of her videos?
I heard that MTV told Janet's management that "she was out of their targeted age group"..
Anyhoo, I love the CD. The two hidden bonus tracks are the best ones on the album IMO..Fast forward thru track#16 and turn it up!!

Janet is doing the damm thing, Ms Jackson if you nasty. The CD is all that. Can wait for some bad ass remixes, cause we all know she did that long before a lot of other artist thought it was cool to give new life to a song. I truly can listen to all the tracks on 20 Y.O. She looks all so damm good for 40yrs and looking like 20 something. The bottom line is Janet can say 20 Y.O. not many so-call artists can say that...... or will be around to sing about it - Peace!

Thank you Janet for setting the record straight regarding Justin Timberlake- the singer who THINKS he is so black and full of soul. He is a pussy. He ran away from the superbowl fiasco and left Janet out there in the cold. And then the politicians woh come running on to put their twist on the event to camouflage their own shortcomings.
Morep ower to you girl. You are no one hit wonder, unlike those woh THINK they can sing or even be a pop artist. They have to respect you girl. You have earned it. Now Janet- go out there and sing baby..... SING !!!

It's kind of hard to forget about the Super Bowl when her breasts are the subject of all her publicity photos. I must be the only one who hears how underwhelming the new album is. She's looking and sounding like all the girls who imitate her. No 40-year old who has been in the business as long as she has should have a child-like voice buried in overproduced tracks. No matter how silly the furor over her scandal, this album is not the vindication it's made out to be. And Justin had nothing to do with that.

Janet Jackson is almost twice as old as Justin Timberlake. She really needs to grow-up and take responsibility for her actions. It sholdn't have taken to much sense to realize that this stunt was stupid, and one or both of these mental giants should have figured that out before going through with it. I applaud Justin for appologizing, and Janet should take a page from his book and do the same, especially since the whole thing was probably her idea.

i don't buy janet's explanation about what happened. if that was the case, she could have come forward w/that info years ago. it may have even saved the fines if she explained the bit about the red piece to be left behind. acknowledging that, the whole episode was blown out of proportion. up until that point, and even now, we see plenty of tit on tv...the nipples are just usually blurred out. and since her nipple was covered, she met the standard for what had already been done on tv anyway. so why the ruckus?!?! i personally would like to see that set of knockers in the flesh anyway. and if i want to see...i know there's untold numbers that want a good peek!

I love classic Damita like the next person. Not to keen on her post All For You career, but Damita Jo was a MUCH better CD than the previous one. As a longtime admirer, I mourn the loss of her artistic, visual, and creative allure overall. But she is still lying about what took place that launched Nipplegate, and in doing so she let's MTV and Justin Timberlake off the hook. She actually allows both entities to save face with this and the comments about loyalty... this is about far more than that, Janet. The three entities conspired; yet, somehow, 100% of the blame for the incident rests solely on Janet. Can you say, "bullshit"? It does not seem to work to her advantage that Justin Timberlake and she share the same manager and publicist, either.
Lastly, I think Oprah did viewers a huge disservice by not discussing her relationship with MTV. Yet another fluff piece...(did ya'll see Condi on 60 minutes?)
Tony
September 27 2006, 1:11PM
I live for Janet and although "20 Y.O." doesn't match the creative powerhouse "The Velvet Rope," it is much better than "All For You" and "Damito Jo" combined.
As for the Superbowl incident, why would a woman who signed an $88 million dollar contract with Virgin Records actually make a conscious decision to flash her breast on national television? Answer- she didn't make this decision consciously because it was an accident.
If we were talking about other artists who spend their entire careers duplicating other artists, then a stunt would be necessary to remain relevant. However, this is Janet we are talking about. People please start using some critical thinking skills.

September 27 2006, 1:23PM
All I know is I'm sure tired of seeing her breasts on magazine covers. Have y'all seen the cover of HM? View it and tell me that the nipplegate thing was a ploy of the right wing government to obscure the detriment of Iraq. That sounds like some serious paranoia to me. If they wanted to get the public mind off Iraq would they wait for an accident to happen? Wouldn't they create the furor?

September 27 2006, 2:12PM
Ya'll are being WAY too negative ... goodness. The sad part is, you are doing EXACTLY what the white folks at Viacom and MTV want your dumb behinds to do - turn your backs on the sister when she needs our support most. All the same queens on this board trashing her will be grinding to her shit in the club next week. The Superbowl shit's over and done with. If nobody's hanging the shit over that crackerass white boy pop star's head, you all need to back off Janet. Period. Black folks, I tell you ...
-G-
September 27 2006, 2:23PM
I agree with you Blue...they need to quit that shit. Thats why when you look at most successful black folk in the world, they never got there by the support of the black community....Thats why Justin Timberlake is number one on R&B charts and other black stations because of they hypocrisy that lay among our own bretheren....So hypocritical...some of these folk are the very one's that give money to the crack heads and drunks in the family to get high with.
If I was Janet, I would be spread butt naked on the covers of these magazine..gotdam a tittie shot, I would take it all the way....LOL!

I just bought my copy last night, and it is truly one of the best releases this fall. This CD is Awesome! Janet came back with her A Game this time. I'm telling everyone to not walk, but run to buy this CD! I'm gonna go back and get the Deluxe Edition this weekend. Janet needs "OUR" support more than ever, so let's rally behind her so she can go to #1 on Billboard.

Hey Blue,
That's what wrong with Black folk now. All criticism is not bigotry and rejection. Why is it so impossible for us to hear critical stuff about us? Admittedly, this anet jackson breast thing is a very small subject (fun for me) but your comment does speak to the tendancy in our community to hear any criticism as hate. Why can't I be critical of her behavior and excuse and still be a fan?
G, I don't know of a single successful black person that did not get there on the shoulders of another black person or with the help of their community. Did you ever think that Justin Timberfake is number one on the R&B chart because white people ALSO buy R&B. You can't really believe that only black people buy black artists records.
Okay you converted me, O.J. is innocent, Janet's brother is not a child molester, R. Kelley didn't sex up and piss on an adolescent girl, Marion Barry was set up, and the KKK owns Church's Chicken.

September 27 2006, 3:20PM
Saint James, what a name by the way, the point was that African-Americans don't seem to understand who they should be supporting these days. We're talking about Janet here, not OJ or R Kelly, or her brother Mike, Janet didn't commit any crime. Whether you think the breast reveal was intentional or not, it's hardly worth ongoing criticism. Also, personally, I think that the SB has greatly affected many people's perceptions of Janet's artistry. If you enjoy R&B and progressive pop music, I just can't fathom how anyone could think that even Damita Jo was a dud. No veteran artist surpasses their greatest achievement(that's why it's their greatest achievement). Janet still makes good to great music(20 Y.O. is great)on the regular, and that says a lot. Also, she always come across as sweet, humble, and she looks great. So, what's the intelligent basis for criticizing Janet? There isn't any...
Blue
September 27 2006, 3:34PM
Well said Langston. I agree to a point Saint James - we do have a tendency to blindly support some people. But, this case is not so extreme that we should write our girl off. Espeically us, as black gay men - she is one of the ONLY sisters in the game who embraces us. I ain't seen that wanna-be-church-girl Beyonce or any of these young chickenhead tricks reaching out to us.

I was only using a form of overstatement to make a broader point. Janet ain't none of them. I was addressing the "either or attitude" of some of the posters. I'm out.
Peace and Blessings.

Blue, please.
Unwavering devotion to Janet is NOT a symbol of our racial solidarity, okay? I couldn't care less about the titty. My argument is that the music is wack, and has gotten wacker with each album for quite a while now. But everybody gushes since she "looks good," shocked that she isn't crippled with arthritis or something. The messages of Control and Rythm Nation are now replaced with excuses to give the world more dancing than singing, with the bosoms taking the lead. I personally will not critcize her now and love her new music later: I'm not schizophrenic. And it is SO insulting to be told that criticism of a black artist is proof that one has been brainwashed by a white agenda, or has a "dumb behind." Sorry if we don't all share a taste for mediocre music. Especially from the airhead who said "oh, like, golly, I never would have worked with Buju Banton if I had known he was, like, a homophobe. My record company totally should have told me." She got no hate for that...Justin wasn't involved.

September 28 2006, 11:55AM
I agree with you Blue, they do not get it! Racial solidarity goes way far beyond Janet Jackson...and Saint James, years ago, there was black unity in our community, thats WHEN WE MADE IT WITH THE SUPPORT OF OUR COMMUNITY....Nowadays, there is no racial solidarity in our community due to the over critiqing that we do so much, and we rather tear someone down than build them up. Unity in the black community is a word used in the 60's. The MAJORITY of the people in our community do not vote, support social programs, attend local school council and PTA meetings, support the churches, and when we buy music, its often the bootleg copies of the DVD or the CD, so we are not the reason these artist going PLATINUM...But we can critique people and judge alllllll daaaaayyyyy long. Thats the black community in our country. And in the "Black Gay" community, its one hundred times shadier...catch it!

Janet looked fantastic, and Oprah looked absolutely gorgeous as a powerful, media mogul. I am so proud of them.
I loved Janet's performance of "Nasty Boys" - it was very energizing and nostalgic. She was a pioneer of choreographed backup dancing long before the Britney Spears and boy bands of the current world.

September 28 2006, 8:16PM
Justin made Janet record a song with a homophobe, Jay? Get it right when you're using somebody's argument against them. I expect y'all to give Busta, Beenie and Buju as much of a free pass for their antics as you give Janet for her warmed over creativity block. After all, they're all black, so we have to lick their freakin' boots no matter what. The same thing we don't want white folks to do at our expense.
Jay
September 28 2006, 11:54PM
bubba, no one on here has suggested that we support Janet just because she is black and you know it. You've blown this subject into something that it simply isn't. Blue originally used the whole nipple gate thing as an example to make his point, and it pissed you off.
You have made it crystal clear that you DO NOT like Janet Jackson or her music....and that's cool dude. No ones trying to win you over (at least I'm not). You seem to be very angry for some reason, and I don't get it. You can rant and rave all you want about how Janet's music sucks, and how we all worship her because she's black...blah, blah, blah...but when ever you get finished, Justin TimberFAKE was STILL very much involved in that incident. You will be hard pressed to find many people that feel otherwise. Just come on out and say you hate the woman and MOVE ON.

September 29 2006, 6:24PM
Hey G,
The reason black solidarity existed in much larger numbers in the era to which you refer is because there was an understanding that we as black folk had a collective responsibility to defy the negative stereotypes and suppostions about us. We carried ourselves with a little more dignity despite our lack of opportunity; recognizing that if one "made it" it reflected positively for all of us. Conversely if some of us acted irresponsibly we all were affected.(Some of that behavior was rooted in fear.) Who among us is unaware of what I call the "National Negro Prayer"?.."Oh Lord, I hope he/she ain't black." That prayer is prayed at 6:00 p.m. by most of black America while watching the news. The real problem is that too many of us won't endure ANY critique just or unjust. We are all individuals now and it has been to our detriment. I don't know anyone who tears anyone down allllll daaaay. Personally, I vote, never buy anything bootleg OR hot and I am active in my community. Wher' y'all live?

All I have to say is that Janet doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. Her fans, the true ones are always going to be there no matter what. Blowing up the charts and making number one hits she doesn't need to do that anymore. Ms. Jackson has more than proved herself time and time again. She should continue to do what she does anyway, make music she likes. If others do great, if not oh well. Mama has her duckets.

I saw this already but I would like to thank you for having a extremely great amount of supportt for Janet!!!
Now you ca ngo to the nucklehead Marc Lamont Hill's blog and tell him to stop bullying her. Lately he has nothing but negative to say about her for some reason. I think he and his followers (commenters) treat her so unfair and like the media put the whole incidnet on her shoulders!!!!!
Just knock some sense into him. God help him!!!
