Best Episode Yet

Although I have given up the task of writing weekly commentary on the episodes of Noah's Arc, I have to say that last night's episode of Noah's Arc was the best yet. The plot line between Alex (Rodney Chester) and Guy (Benjamin Patterson) has developed to the point where we can't tell if Alex is crazy or Guy is crazy, or both. Well, actually we know that Guy is crazy, but we just don't know for sure about Alex.
Meanwhile, Noah's triangle of lovers continues to spin him around on a carousel of confusion from Wade (Jensen Atwood) to Baby Gat (Jason Steed) to Quincy (Keith Hamilton Cobb). And although Ricky's character didn't advance much in last night's episode, Chance's story did move forward. His relationship with his partner suffered after the couple took in Eddie's boss's lesbian wife (Victoria Rowell). That's never a good move.
With down low women, closeted gay rappers, black gay bloggers, and a crazy fatal attraction in the making (see the slide show below), the story lines just keeps getting juicier and juicier. I'm really proud of how the show has matured and developed since it started last year. You can clearly see the creators have made a much more creative and efficient use of the alloted time per episode this season.
The new characters add much more depth and diversity to the show than ever before. And the writing is increasingly crisp and fluid. Even the music (from Beyonce to John Legend to Jody Watley) is inspired and appropriate.
I tape Noah's Arc (Logo) and Project Runway (Bravo) and watch them both on Wednesday nights. You best believe I won't be missing any episode's of the Arc this season.

I loved it too but it’s a guilty love. The whole first season was about developing the bond between these friends, but now Ricky, Chance, and Noah have so abandoned Alex that he can’t even confide in them when he is getting death threats??? And why didn’t Wade and Noah grab Guys girlfriend and bring her directly to Alex’s house to expose PSYCHO Guy and save their friend??? Drama is cool and it makes the show a very fun “popcorn” watch but aren’t moments like last weeks tenderness between Chance and Kenya powerful enough to draw the audience in without the over the top “Single White Female” sub plots?

I noticed that ITunes has not posted the latest Noah's Arc episode as of Thursday morning. All other episodes this season were up by mid Wed. Does anybody know what the ITunes policy is for posting shows for download? Is it a certain amount of time after the show airs on TV?

I am so with "Steven" on this one. The whole Alex/Trey/Guy plotline is juicy, but the way its playing out is so implausible. Especially, the lack of support from Alex's boys. After everything he's told them, reading a suicide note that Alex did not write and finding out Guy still has a girlfriend (to whom he's lying) should have been enough to motivate Noah to "circle the troops" around Alex--- but it wasn't. Last week, Guy sliced his hand. This week, except for Alex's mention of it during a tirade and Guy's lie near the end of the episode, its as if it never happened. Don't get me started on Trey's continual siding with Guy. I'll continue to watch though because the show is so much better overall compared to last season.

This season the show has been alot better and more developed, I wish Logo had ordered more than eight episodes. I'm hoping that Noah and Wade don't get back together, that Noah hooks up with Quincy, they have a nice chemistry, that way in season three Noah and Wade could become screen writing partners and Wade could spend the whole season trying to break them up.

I have to preface my statement with, I absolutely LOVE the Noah's Arc... that said, I'm extremely disappointed in the turn of events with the Alex/Trey/Guy sub-plot. Alex has gone from a fearless, "Drive up and wreck shop..." kind-of guy to a helpless punk who allows a confirmed psychopath to continue to stay in his home and threaten his relationship. True, his "Arc" of friends could show more support, but ultimately, Alex has always struck me as a handle-your-business guy and now he's hoping for the best - even getting tossed from his own home!! Patrik, if you need additional writers, a focus group or ideas, please don't hesitate to hit up your viewers... we're paying attention to NA and we're hoping you'll pay attention to us! As an aside, why has Noah been converted into a brainless hooker? Are we now making Noah the new Ricky? Clean it up Pat.. we want a Season 8 with this!

I disagree with most of the posts here. You guys are missing the nuance of the plotlines and story developments. Alex cried wolf so many times over Guy, acting like a jealous fool with no proof or good reason- that now it is extremely difficult for Trey or the friends to take his claims seriously. Just because he says Guy cut his hand on purpose doesn't mean his friends will automatically believe him. And seeing the suicide note IN ALEX'S HANDWRITING can be interpreted two ways. Noah obviously wasn't sure if Alex wrote the note or not. If anything, Guy is too clever- he allowed Alex just enough rope to hang himself. Alex backed himself into a corner by behaving like a lunatic before- so now that he has a legitimate claim, no one takes him seriously. I love this storyline and expect that next week Alex's boys will rally around him...

UGGHHHHH...I say enough already with the campy MELODRAMA. This whole ALEX/TREY/GUY has dragged on far too long. I mean this goes all the way back to last season.....and its full of flaws. Trey and Guy were in Africa for six weeks...why wouldn't Guy have made a move on Trey then? Guy was Wade's friend initially yet you've never seen the two of them interact since he was initially introduced. Why? Why are they making Trey out to be so aloof? I mean what gay man would not be suspect of a "straight" man who is so comfortable around and being affectionate with gay men especially in the black community? BE DONE WITH IT ALREADY!!!
THUMBS UP on the stroyline with Victoria Rowell and the other woman. Well developed and not overdone.
Love me some KEITH HAMILTON COBB to death....but....not feeling the BILLY DEE WILLIAMS persona he's invoking into the role. "Do you want my arm to fall off?" How cheesy was that.

BRAVO to last night's episode!! The best so far, and hat's off to the writers! They really knocked it out of the park with that one.
Derek, you hit the nail on the head with your with your breakdown of the plotlines & story developments. I couldn't agree more!
Allegro, I feel you on keith Hamilton Cobb's character...LOL, you had me over here cracking up! And yes, that was pretty damn cheesy!! LOL!
I feel this show is off to a great start. That's why I've been encouraging others to stay patient and hang in there. Most shows don't truly hit their stride until about the third season. If you all think it's good now...wait until next season. It's going to be on FIRE!! I guarantee!

This season of " Noah's Arc" is better than the last and I'm a bit disappointed that there are only 8 episodes this season. Although some say that the Guy/Alex/Trey storyline isn't plausible,in my opinion it is definately probable.I was so feeling "Baby Gatt" because not only is he sexy as hell but I really was feeling the chemistry between he and Noah.I know that the whole thing between the two of them is squashed though because of the " Homothug" angle.I'm not really feeling Quincy and I really don't see any chemistry between he and Noah.I really don't see Noah as being a whore because he hasn't slept with any of these guys but it's more of an in between moment until he and Wade find their way back to one another. Great post Keith and keep up the good work.

I too am DVRing Noah's Arc and Project Runway... but now days everything I watch is on DVR cause the commercials get in the way of the storyline....
I believe the addition of the guest characters, especially Keith Hamilton Cobb and Victoria Rowell (I am also a Y&R fan so seeing them both on there is great) is definitely adding more depth and more interest to the storylines.
I didn't know there were only 8 shows ordered... that must mean this season is halfway done?? That sucks!!

Did anyone go to Logo's website (logoonline.com) and watch the extra web-only digisode? It showed the friends at Ricky's all sitting together watching Alex and discussing the situation, trying to figure out a way to help him- and acknowledging the fact that they haven't been there for him fully. I won't give away the punchline, but it's pretty funny! On the whole, the digisodes are excellent- last week's argument between Noah and Wade after Baby Gat kissed him was fantastic! Offered a lot of insight into the Noah/Wade break-up...
Speaking of Baby Gat- he is so charming. He seems annoying at first, but he just lights up the screen and wins you over. I hope he gets his act together and we see more of him down the line. And Rachel True was awesome. And the MUSIC! Kelly Rowland's "Bad Habit", classic Luther (Never Too Much), the new John Legend single (Save Room) and I think that was a Solange club mix playing at the movie premiere. I even liked that!
I agree with Keith. Best- episode- ever.

I'm a big fan of Noah's Arc. I love season 2 of Noah's Arc but, I'm a little annoyed at Mr. Polk for "whoring out NOAH'.His character has no behavoir, quote on quote. I want it come to amends between Noah and Wade. When they are together the earth moves. The chemistry between the two are amazing.LOVE...I hope there is a make-up SEX/LOVE scene between NOAH/WADE it will be HOT...........

I'm really enjoying the show this season. The infusion of new actors, directors, and producers have greatly improved the of quality of the series.
I agree with Derek. Alex has backed himself into a corner. However,Guy is a doctor. He can afford to live on his own. We all know the rule on house guest and fish.
I hope they keep Dr Guy around after this story line. He is PHOINE! Crazy, but PHOINE!
My only problem with the show would be Noah's wardrobe. I'm always just a little afraid of what Noah is going to have on. The clothes he wears to business meetings, out to dinner, even to the park, make me, and most of the people I speak with, gag. The outfits are a lot more flambouyant then the character. I think Noah can dress with style, and avoid the mundaneness of hip hop fashion without looking like he's wearing something designed by Bob Mackie or Dame Edna.

Yeah, I was on the edge last night watching the show. I have to say, I was quite pissed off when I realized the show went by so fast. I can't wait unitl next week. I purchased digital cable just for Noah's Arc. LOL Best believe.

I DON'T CARE FOR THIS SEASON OF THE ARC. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN, IT IS OF BETTER QUALITY THAN LAST SEASON, BUT ITS STILL LAME, WITH PREDICTABLE STORY LINES, AND GAY INNUENDO'S. THE LINE FROM THE MOVIE LAST NIGHT YOU KNOW WAS SPINNING AROUND IN SOME OLD QUEENS HEAD FOR 30 YRS.
I THOUGHT THEY WERE GONNA 'BUTCH' THE GUYS UP THIS SEASON, BUT THEY DIDN'T. INSTEAD THEY TURNED THEM INTO WOMEN, EVEN CALLING THEMSELVES 'GIRL'. I THINK SOMEBODY ON THAT SHOW, WHO DOESN'T GET UP AND DUCK TAPE THERE PENIS DOWN EVERY MORNING, SHOULD STAND UP AND SAY, ITS ABOUT 4 GUYS. WHEN WATCHING A SHOW ABOUT MEN, YOU SHOULD SEE THERE MASCULINITY, IT WHAT MAKES US MEN.

I agree with Nat's point of view 100%. Imagine if the show Queer as Folks was reversed with the show Noah's Arc. Now that is television.

Well, as much as I love the show, it has to have more time or more episodes. The way the drama unfolds is too much too quick. It's like they tried to pack as much as they can in the 22 or 23 minutes they are alloted. But, please understand they are doing a wonderful job, but it's like someone said earlier, Alex's story line is getting a little out there. Especially when Trey threw him out. If I was Alex and everything comes out in the open I would drop Trey's ass. He is not even considering trusting his boy whom he has had a 7 yr. relationship with.
Anywho, I will keep emailing Logo hounding them for and about season 3, 4, 5 etc. And about more time or more episodes. I think this will be my 8th time emailing Logo. Just giving some hints to ya'll out there.

Question for Nat: Why do you watch a show that you so obviously don't care for? Not every TV show is going to be to the liking of every viewer. And just because this show happens to be about 4 black gay men, that does not mean it will appeal to you because you happen to be black and/or gay (assuming that you are either). The beautiful thing is that you have the option of turning the channel and watching something else. I didn't find the writing or storylines on Queer As Folk engaging or interesting in the slightest, so I stopped watching after the first season. I'm also not a fan of Law & Order- so naturally I'm not going to waste my valuable time watching it! Get a clue and change the channel if it's not for you.
And as for this issue of masculinity verses femininity- I can't believe we're still having this silly conversation. We all know that there are all types of gay men out there- flamboyant, masculine and everything in between. Get over yourselves and stop hating on the less-than-masculine gay men!
Jeff

Derek, there's only one problem with what you've said about not having proof on Guy and that is the fact that he's lied to his girlfriend. That was proof enough that something is not right.

the biggest difference between season one and season two is that they've pretty much sucked the remaining sentimentality out of it.
now, they've found the perfect tone for the show, and that tone is BANANAS. i love it!!
as for Guy/Trey/Alex - ask yourself who you'd believe - the calm, cool staight guy who went to Africa for six months with Trey and didn't try anything? or your friend who breaks into houses with a ski mask and a casserole and almost gets shot, strangles Guy at the wedding, and has a suicide note in his own handwriting?? given all of this, Wade and Noah still play amateur detectives and scope out Guy's ex-girlfriend to get the scooby doo.
now, finally Guy's bubble-brained ex-girlfriend/fiancee is the wildcard or ticking bomb. at this point, there has to be some kind of war council called. seems from the preview that they send Ricky (best gaydar?) in next. Guy, who is some kind of evil genius, ain't having it. by the way, the ad lib about alex and the knife was brilliant.

September 7 2006, 4:13PM
I'm in agreement with so many posters above...especially Stephen and Allegro. Absolutely LOVE this show but the Alex/Guy/Trey story almost seems to be written by a different person than the writer of the Noah, Chance and Ricky stories, which are all plausible situations for their characters and, in Ricky's case, even educational. For me, the biggest "miss" in the Alex/Guy/Trey story has been totally disconnecting Guy from Wade, the character through whom we "met" Guy. Both Wade and Guy were portrayed to be heterosexual at the outset of their introductions onto to the show. In a season and a half (Lord only knows what the scripted dramatic time lapse is...lol), Wade has been in relationships with not one but TWO men and Guy is now at the very least having strong longings for a man. I think that the potential for some really powerful storytelling exists (or existed because it appears to have been missed) if we got to see Wade and Guy talking abour their sexuality like the other four do.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one not feelin' the Alex-Trey-Guy mess -- it's just too much. As far as Alex crying wolf, even though there was no proof of anything earlier, we clearly knew Guy was into Trey and I thought Alex had every reason to be jealous. Now with all the boyz and Trey just thinking he's wacko...very disappointing. And what was up with the whole boss' wife and her lover thing? That just made no sense to me.
The show really does need more time -- more episodes, maybe even an hour, because it's starting to be a blur. No time for the relationships or characters to develop. But, I am still a loyal fan and I do watch all the digisodes and everything else -- and yeah, Noah's a little too out there with the clothes but I thought that white suit he wore to the premiere was off the chain! Peace.

Mark Norris I agree with you 100%. I would think after being in a relationship for 7 years a couple should know each other inside out and have trust among each other. If Alex was uncomfortable with Trey leaving with Guy to Africa for six weeks, it should have never happened. therefore when Trey left anyway, Alex should have left the relationship and moved on with his life. I still can not figure out how Trey can throw Alex out of his own house???I guess that is the difference between TV and real life, because we all know that would not happening in real life, not with black gay men, that is when drama would have taken place. Yes it is true when you are in a relationship you have instant instinct on a bitch that wants your man, and everybody knows it, its like gay people having gaydar and knowing when another person is gay. I hope Alex does leave Trey because Trey strikes me as buff but dumb! Why would somebody who is a doctor (Guy) need to stay with anybody???????? Lets hope Alex finds a real man next season.
Craig

as per the question asked by chris-leo, I'd believe Alex....if Guy is suppose to be a doctor why the hell is he sleeping on Trey and Alex's couch???

The main thing I get from this episode is Baby Gat is nothing more than a british version of Usher. He even looks like Usher. Usher has had so many beards, I mean, please does anyone really believe these relationships with Chili, Naomi Campbell and this other black model he has been seen in public with or "appearances," with. It's all too obvious and I like Usher, but I know whats goin on and so do the writers of Noah's Arc.

I must say that this episode was pretty good, despite the fact that Noah's response to EVERYTHING is a still vacuous coma. The Alex/Trey/Guy thing is kinda getting on my nerves now, but I understand it. Even best friends don't trust each other all the time and have doubts - that's real.
I LOVED the scene with Chance and his daughter! And seeing the two women run away with each other ... wow, that was so romantic! There will be hell to pay, though, I'm sure ...
A side note: this episode was written by Rikki Beadle-Blair, executive writer for Noah's Arc. I'm sure he's more than a little responsible for Baby Gat ...

CORRECTION Donald: This episode was written by Patrik-Ian Polk. Last week's episode was written by Rikki Beadle-Blair. But I've read that Polk lives in London as well, so the whole British rapper character makes sense, I guess...
And what's with the Noah's-a-ho talk? Going out on a date with a guy does not make you a ho. He didn't sleep with Baby Gat- just went to a movie premiere. And I loved how that storyline played out with Baby Gat attempting to woo Noah by buying him expensive presents, Noah and his pals discussing it with the friends saying go for it, and then finally when Noah dropped Wade off at home and Wade basically showed him by hugging Dre in front of him that Noah should move on, so he called Baby Gat. And i LOVED that they played that Destiny's Child song BAD HABIT during the scene where Noah took Wade home. It was perfect! "I can't seem to shake you, you seem to really have a hold on me, it's not the fact that I don't love you no more, but i gotta break this bad habit..." Nice one.

I think that the story line with Alex and Trey is interesting, but it has been drug out way to long, its time to wrap it up. Also I can't believe that after seven yrs. Trey would believe someone else over Alex.
But more importantly I am waiting for Noah and Wade to get back together. Its so obvious that they belong with each other, you can tell by the way they look at each other, or how Noah always calls Wade when he needs help and Wade drop evrything to run to his rescue. If there are only 3 episodes left they need to hurry up and put the super couple back together.

Cafetino: Patrik Polk posts the songs from each episode on myspace. Here's a link:
And I wanna go on record as saying I love Quincy. I think he's sexy as hell, suave and debonair. And I also loved the moment when he quoted the film "Lady Sings the Blues". That is a classic black American film, and that moment when Billy Dee Williams says to Diana Ross, 'Do you want my arm to fall off...', is one of the most memorable lines. It's not cheesy at all. It's an obvious homage, and I found it romantic and clever. My two cents...Love the show. Best episode yet, I concur.

Why isn't the new episode available on iTunes yet? This is the first week that it hasn't been available the day before the show airs on Logo. I still have not seen it, one of the downsides of moving into a new place and having to wait for the cable company to install service 3 weeks after the fact ! I'm suffering from major Noah's Arc withdrawl right now!

September 8 2006, 3:36AM
Question for Nat: Why do you watch a show that you so obviously don't care for?
well Derek, i have watched a lot of TV shows i didn't care for and read alot of books i didn't like or agree with, but to comment on them, i had to be informed. shoot my niece came over and i watched Dora the explorer and i don't like that show. also, until south park's new season starts and i don't have anything to do, I'll watch the TV show, it airs 3-4 times a week anyway.
i have every right to comment on the way African Americans are portrayed on TV, because it effects how we are portrayed in the greater society. the main characters on this show are snap queens and the masculine guys are extras only dragged for beef cake scenes or to comfort the women. so until there is an equal balance, there will always be a discussion about mannerisms, because most brotha don't get up in the am and wear clothing that comes out the Jr miss dept to work.

Cafetino: Just type in "myspace.com" followed by a forward slash "/" and then "patrikian". This should take you to Polk's myspace page.
There is also a Noah's Arc page where Polk lists the same info...replace "parikian" with "noahs_arc".
To NAT: I agree with Derek. Although we all get curious about shows, at a certain point, when you decide you don't like it, why keep wasting your time watching something you so clearly believe to be a misrepresentation of blk gay culture- unless you work as a TV critic? And it's a completely different thing to watch a show with your young niece- I have a brother who loves Degrassi High. I don't, but I watch with him because I want to know his world. And to call the main characters on NOAH "snap queens" just shows ignorance. Not all gay men are "straight-acting" macho thug wannabes. NOAH has no obligation to show YOUR view of gay life. We all know plenty of gay blk men like these characters. I think you and all the haters secretly love the show- that's why you keep watching
Miguel

Keith, I am actually disappointed that you like this show and promote it on your website. I don't know these black men and I don't want to know them. But, I guess it rings true for an apparently suburban "establishment gay" such as yourself.
Zeus
September 9 2006, 9:34AM
I think the pilot episode was done very well. It only wen't downhill when Logo picked it up. Logo is owned by MTV so the subtle changes were most likely made to draw in straight audiences. I know the show has a big following amongst straight black women which isn't suprising.
I do watch the show and realize that it's not for everyone. Noah's outrageous attire, the guys calling each other "b#@!#" every five seconds, and some of the acting annoys me but if you overlook these minor flaws it's a pretty good show. Alex is beyond funny, he should get a spinoff.
I do think last episode was the best one EVER.

September 9 2006, 11:19AM
i'm a little thrown by this Alex/Trey/Guy controversy. TOO MUCH??? exactly what show did you think you were watching last season??? since when was Noah's Arc the epitomy of refinement and restraint??!!
Chance crashed a car into a house ON EPISODE TWO, and the boys/girls pulled a musical number out of their asses in five minutes ON EPISODE THREE - complete with killer choreography. then there's that little matter of the Chance/Eddie wedding/church brawl on the first season finale. the show's pretty much ALWAYS been one peach cobbler away from chitterlin' circuit.
as for the queen thing. no, i don't call my friends "girl" and "bitch" or dress like Lisa Bonet. however i have to admit that often i see groups of friends who ACT more like Noah but DRESS more like Wade. and no matter what we think we're giving off, a whole lot of us would GAG if we saw ourselves on television, walking and talking.
when we get a few more shows on the air, maybe Noah's Arc won't have to cure cancer every week.

I finally saw last week's episode Friday night on the rebroadcast ... wow! LOL. That was crazy. The really cool thing about it is my mom AND my sister watched the show, LOL. I'm happy they like it. My only worry with "NA" is that it's gonna get like "Desperate Housewives" - too many characters to develop and not enough time to do it. I feel like if they aren't careful, the show will lose focus. Whatever the case, I'll continue to watch!

Personally, I like Noah's Arc - yes, some of the characters may be a little more effeminate than I'd like, and maybe some of their plotlines may be a little exaggerated, but still, it's nice to see a BLACK gay show on the air! I can deal with those little issues - and the show is enjoyable to watch! My only problem is, it's too SHORT - either it should be an hour long or there should be a longer season with more episides- I can understand economic reasons for that not being the case, but maybe if the show stays on long enough, it'll be possible!

Jared -
I feel you. I only got digital cable to support the guys and watch the show. People can't see the big picture. And what kills me with "us" is that if we didn't have a show like this, folks would be raising hell with Logo. So, some black folks you can't please. I for one love it and will continue to watch. I like a show that reflects us - I think the cast is very colorful and varied. And being a resident of a major city, you do see everything walking down the street from snap queens to homothugs, to business chic homos - and I love them all! We all have a place in the big picture. Just me two cents.

I love this new season and it is definately better than the the 1st however I do think that the whole Guy/Alex/Trey thing was a little too unreal. I'm sorry Guy would've got his ass beat from jump when he whispered in my ear and there would be no questions asked. However for the sake fo drama it didn't happen. Okay I'll roll with that but a suicide note? Poisoning the food almost killing Alex's man with his crazieness? Naw Alex should've shown Trey the note and then beat dat nigga's ASS! So I thought that was unreal 'cause a good ass whupping would've been what me and mine would've done in Alex's postion and many of y'all would've done it too...But the show is still good.

I loved the second season as well.
More realistic and practical. The sexual undertones and the maturity of the cast made it WONDERFUL to watch.
I saw a great deal of growth in Noah himself. He's the type of friend ANYONE would love to be around because he has such an understanding heart. I would love to have a friend like that who I can tell my problems. In the first season, he struck me as the naive, yet sweet guy who knew very little about the way the gay world operates, although he's been around it for a while. He has truly matured in the second season, because while he still maintains a little of that naivete, he has wiser judgment in his dealings.
Dealing with the friction between Guy and Alex, Alex and the gang, Alex and Trey, and eventually Guy and Trey, it's pretty believable, a little overdone, But still VERY believable. But you know what, the imagination is a mother to deal with. I can't shake the feeling that there was a CONNECTION between the conflict involving Guy and the Gang and Noah's Gay Bash experience. As devious as Guy was, the reality could have been that he paid three guys to bash Noah and got off with his hands clean. And per his own words to Ricky, he said "Stay out of my business or it's gonna get real ugly." Just something to think about. But Good season, Good acting, and Believable story line.
