I Know That Guy...

gay games stretchafter losing a wrestling match

One of the strange things about competing in a public gay sporting event is that you never know who is taking your picture or filming you, and you never know where it's going to show up. Take, for example, this photo of a wrestler stretching at the Gay Games. Turns out the photo is a picture of me. I found it on a web site called Amat victoria curam!.

One of the other odd things about the competition is figuring out the languages of all the people who come to an international sporting event. In this case, I don't speak the language so I could not understand what the blogger wrote on his site. The photo caption reads in Dutch:

"De Gay Games 2006 zijn begonnen. Hier zie je Keith Boykin aan het stretchen voordat hij begint met zijn worstelpartij. De spelen zijn dit jaar in Chicago, maar over een week zijn er ook Gay Games (Out Games) in Montreal. Er was weer eens ruzie over de organisatie en dus hebben we dit jaar twee Games... :-)"

So I took the text to a free translation service on the Internet and figured it out. It says: "The Gay Games 2006 have begun. Here is Keith Boykin shown stretching before he works out. The games take place this year in Chicago, but a week from now there is also the Out Games in Montreal. Once again there was a quarrel over the organization and thus we have this year two Games."

The other photo shows an exhausted wrestler who has just finished a match. I didn't recognize the guy at first, but it turns out that was me too. I had just lost my first match and I was ready to go home and call it a day. Both photos were taken by Reuters photographer John Gress, who covered the wrestling competition at the Gay Games.

I'm glad you ended up victorious. Despite all it took to get there and the fact that your preparations didn't go as planned, you did it! Bravo!

Keith!

Congratulations!!! What an amazing debut in the Gay Games you have had. As I indicated when we chatted on Sunday, your remarks during the Opening Ceremonies were eloquent, memorable, and powerfully delivered. To cap that triumph off with a GOLD MEDAL. Simply awesome!

I am kicking myself for not making the journey out to Ryan Auditorium again on Monday afternoon. I ended up scoring a ticket to ballroom dancing and took that in instead.

Give me a call when you return to NYC. I would love to get to get together for lunch sometime. If we do it in August, maybe I can introduce you to the Congressman (assuming you haven't already met him).

In any event, kudos for all your successes this week.

Cheers,

Arturo
