Bush: 'Don't Call Me A Racist'

After three months of sagging poll numbers, the White House charm offensive is in high gear this month as President Bush has been touring the country to convince Americans that we are winning the war in Iraq.
The media campaign continued today with an "NBC News Exclusive" in which the White House arranged for NBC Anchor Brian Williams to meet with the President in the Oval Office, fly onboard Air Force Once, watch the president backstage, and then interview him again. NBC even renamed its nightly news broadcast for the special event.
During the interview, Bush promised to keep taking his message "to the people" in a variety of formats. I don't know what people he was talking about, but sitting down with the anchor of a major network news broadcast hardly seems sufficient. Nor should we be impressed by the president's speeches to the carefully selected GOP-friendly audiences he calls "the people." Today, for example, the president spoke to the everyday people at the Council on Foreign Relations in Philadelphia.
Bu the most remarkable moment of the NBC interview today came when the President rejected claims of racial insensitivity. Bush said unequivocally that he is not a racist. "You can call me anything you want," he said, "but do not call me a racist."
In response to a question from Brian Williams that the government may have responded slowly to Hurricane Katrina because of the class or race of the victims in New Orleans, Bush said that was not the case.
"After the tragedy, I heard someone ask rhetorically, 'What if this had been Nantucket, Massachusetts, or Inner Harbor, Baltimore or Chicago or Houston?' Are you convinced the response would have been the same? Was there any social or class or race aspect to the response?" Williams asked.
Bush replied: "Somebody I heard — you know, a couple of people said — you know, said, 'Bush didn't respond because of race, because he's a racist.' That is absolutely wrong. And I reject that. Frankly, that's the kind of thing that — you can call me anything you want — but do not call me a racist. Secondly, this storm hit all up and down. It hit New Orleans. It hit down in Mississippi too. And people should not forget the damage done in Mississippi."
So maybe he's not a racist. Maybe he just hates the South.

One thing Bush was right about....he ain't a racist. He's a classist. In his eyes money talks. I'm not a fan of his...but I won't say he's a racist. I ain't saying he's a goldigger, but he ain't messin' with no broke niggas. The entire American system is framed on racism, pointing out a political party or one member of it falls far short of getting to the root. How many Rwandans were murdered in ethnic cleansing while Clinton was in office and the US sat back and did nothing. Was it close to 1-million? Let's tell the whole story and not our own one sided political agendas. America is a racist nation and it's learned to hide it.

I don't like or support BUSH at all.
But I honestly believe that ALL AMERICANS, both white and black......deeply hate black people.
I do.
And I keep wondering when is that going to be addressed by BLACK AMERICANS.
The way that "authentic" Black women are treated in this country by BLACK MEN is so atrocious, it makes me want to move away....and it's "prejudice"....but for some strange reason, it's totally allowed, because we can whine over the treatment black MALES, but not the marginalization heaped on the their mother's IMAGE--by these same black males.
Like Marita Golden, I'm SICK of it being ignored and not talked about.
I could give a damn about what a Black man thinks is "racist".
TURN ON "BET" or pick up any black men's magazine--that's what I call racist.
While we call WHITES racist, our people are being erased by Black Men who would rather pretend MARIAH CAREY is a black woman than be born from a real one.
I could care less what BUSH feels about black people.

I think the main reason things were so bad in New Orleans was the complete unpreparedness of the locals, be they the city mayor or the state governor. FEMA may not have been in the best of shape, but if the city had had ANY kind of evacuation plan and all those buses later seen flooded had been used then none of those people would have been left in town to suffer. Shame on the mayor for his lack of action, I think he more than anyone else is to blame for a lot of the deaths and suffering.

Thanks Kola Boof - well said, well said.
Who gives a damn if Bush hates Black people. It is the racist/ self-hating Negroes, who are still breathing from the sacrafices of our Fore Parents... everything has to be about what White people think and feel.
Forget that "ish"... as far as I am concerned Bush could very well be the Grand Fucking Wizard... what does that mean to me - nothing.
Let us, get our shit together. Yes, Katrina was a devastating natural and "human" catastrophe... the fact that Bush didn't give a damn about our family dying shouldn't have surprised... and how many Black people jumped all over the bandwagon raping these people over and over and again too?
Especially the toddies that call themselves black republicans... a group of nothing but welfare-recipient-broken-gaped-assed-koolaidkids who need to be lined up and shot one by one...along with Ray Nagin, who should lead the line. The police chief, that lying simpleton son of a bitch is on the run. I say put out a wanted poster for he Nigger ass - dead or alive.
And don't let me even start on the pathetic negroes calling themselves democrats! Jeez!
Tell me what you wanna do for us... not what White folk wanna do, how they feel (who gives a damn), or what they are not doing.

I agree with the question, "What are we doing for ourselves?" Who cares whether Bush is a racist? In my opinion, he's a white man in America, so he has no choice but to have been socialized to hold biased views -- it's just the way of the world.
Post Katrina, I was most shocked by the lax response of the National Urban League and the NAACP. It took days for either organization to respond to the evacuees by raising money and holding telethons.
I am employed by a local affiliate of one of these organizations, and each summer we pull together a huge conference with people from all over the country styling and profiling and making merry -- and we could not immediately initiate a response to our people in need.
Something is wrong.
It's time for us to learn the system, take advantage of it and move forward. Who cares if someone is racist. I'll be too busy making a life for me, my family, my community and my people to even notice.

It's funny that he only says he doesn't want to be *called* a racist. Cause it's bad for his numbers... I don't understand why the press lets people like him take these "photo ops" even when there's no new journalistic value involved...

actually, it's not just Black males, it's also the dumb lemming heterosexual women who bleach their hair or put on long blonde wigs, put in green contacts, lighten their skin, pump their chests full of petrochemicals, and think they have to run around looking like strippers to keep these men.
otherwise, someone might think they are !gasp! lesbians, or something, oh the horror. Black heterosexual culture is broken beyond belief. Any woman who puts up with this behavior and refuses to do anything about it for fear of being called a sapphire or whatever cute and trendy term for women who don't like being abused, gets what they deserve.
afa who is and who isn't "a racist", that's just a game non-Blacks like to play. being called "a racist", especially by a Black person, is a badge of honor to them. i don't even engage them in the conversation anymore - either they try and bait you into calling them one or they want to play white supremacist confessional, and get you to validate their half assed attempts to get over themselves.
f' em, can't be bothered.

only a racist would snub rosa parks
and the black caucus and the naacp with glee and ease and no apology or remorse
only the mammy of a racist would liken the hurricane katrina debacle to a valid life upgrade
etc.....ad infinitum...
this fool is indeed a racist
and he proves it daily...standy by for more proof..

Thank you, Denise.
That's what I'M saying.
The Democratic Front Runners are RACISTS, too.
Brian Williams of NBC NEWS is probably racist.
Hell, CONDIE RICE hates black folks!
Everybody hates black people.
We need to get OUR-SELVES together and get some unity and a voice and stop branding these White Men racists.
I actually admire WHITE MEN a great deal the older I get and the more I see what BLACK MEN think of my worth as a human.
I admire a lot of White Men racists. Wish my own sons could be that cunning and effective.

As for Black men....I'm not talking about ALL black men.
My father and children's father are both wonderful black men. Keith Boykin is a hero to me. There are countless others.
In my autobiography I have a chapter called "God Is A Black Man". I certainly love black men and surround myself with the best ones. I was generalizing about the ones who constantly whine about the "racist white man"---but are racist against their own mothers.

Who would think that a white male republican from Texas is a racist? Just because his daddy used Willie Horton to get elected? Just because he accused John McCain of having a black baby in order to win the South Carolina primaries? Just because he is anti-affirmative action? Just because he evicted Aristide from Haiti and tried to kill Hugo Chavez in Venezuela? Aww come on! A lying sack of shit maybe, but NEVER a racist! You guys ought to be ashamed of yourselves:-)

The self hatred in our communities is definitely sad. Instead of challenging oppression, many of us become defeated with self hatred and attack one another. I apply my views to the self hating black straight fools who have low self esteem due to prejudice and brainwashing and I also apply my views to the gay(wish I were straight) black people who attack other gays because they can't stand themselves. It's sad because I try to educate the self hating people and the fools get offensive. I believe that black gays are more proud of our physical features than our straight counterparts.

I'm riding with Kola, Denise, & James. I'm not at all concerned about whether or not Bush, Eminem, Paris Hilton, Ren & Stimpy or anybody else is racist. Maybe I should be but I'm not. How can I be concerned about the personal views of someone I'll more than likely never meet when walking down the street in my own community is akin to taking my life in my hands? Back in the day it was the KKK & roving bands of poor white trash we had to worry about. Today it's the gangs. We lash out at Bush & call him a racist but we cower when we see the gang bangers & drug dealers take over our communities. Our men are filling up the jails instead of the colleges. They're dying violent deaths. They're making babies that they can't or won't provide for. For real, I'm more concerned about the state of Black men than what comes out of Bushes mouth or whether he is or isn't a bigot.

jazzi said, "We act like we're so paralyzed by someone elses racism, like if the hate us we're going to die! When have we not had to deal with ignorance? When has it not been apart of our life here?"
imo, this is one place where nationalism and separatism comes in handy.
we don't need them to like us, we don't need them to agree to sit next to us on the bus or in school, we don't need them to approve of our communities, we don't need form of validation from them.
i don't WANT conservatives/mainstreamers/traditionals to like me, there would be something wrong if they did.

I totally agree with everything Jazzi said. We spend to much time obsessing about what White people do much to our own detriment. Whenever you compare yourself to other people, you always find a reason why that person is one-up on you whether it's true or not. Let White people go and your life will improve dramatically because your time and energy will no loner be wasted comparing yourself to someone you may be better than to start with. It took me a long time to realize that. I feel much better because of it.
I also agree with Kola Boof. I couldn't care less about how Bush feels about Black People. Does it matter if the politician is a Democrat or Republican. Neither party really cares about Black people anyway. Haven't you figured that out by now. That's why I have no allegiance to either party.
Kola Boof's other post about Black men who would rather have'nt a white-washed black woman such as Mariah Carey is also very true, even though as I Black man I hate to admit it. I see it all too often. I was grocery shopping yesterday I saw a Hispanic man with two young Black boys under the age of seven. I could not tell if they were his boys or his stepchildren. I saw no tension between them and they all seemed to love and care for each other. I've seen the same ting with White men in that situation. I also see Black men who love their Black young boys very much, unfortunately their numbers pale in comparison with Black men who love their interracial children. I see a lot of that. It causes me concern, but I shake it off and go on with my business. I'm not a racist, but it makes me upset when I see Black men who know how to love there bi-racial children, but not their 100% Black children to same degree. I hope it's not self hate, but I wonder.
It's hard to find love. If you can find someone who loves you whether you are gay or straight and that person is another race, go for it. Everyone should know the joy of love. I just hope that if you date people of another another race, that you don't exclude someone of your own race who is equal. That would be tragic.

Kola is definitely on to something when she says that most black men don't treat "authentic" black women with the respect, dignity, and honor that they deserve. However, let's not fool ourselves into believing that we can't be concerned about the Presdient of the US being a racist. Yes, he's racist. He's an upper-class, heterosexual, white male in a system that is built to privilege upper-class, heterosexual, white males. How he makes decisions about the tax money that we give to the government is awfully important, especially considering the response to something like Katrina should be handled by those government monies. When there are natural disasters in the midwest, the government is on-hand taking care of it. We need to hold them accountable for that. Let's not decieve ourselves into thinking that we should not be a part of the fight for keeping them honest. At the same time, we can multi-task. We need to get our own house in order, brothers!

I grew up in Charlotte, NC. My family was one of 3 white families in the apartment complex. Everyone else was either Black or didn't speak a damn word of English. I didn't know what racism could do to people until I was a teenager living in Rock Hill, SC... Would you believe that was less than half an hour away? I had never had to deal with until then. White people didn't like me cuz I "acted Black." Black people didn't like me for the same reason. Put that next to the fact that my parents didn't make nada, I'm bisexual, and I've got a higher IQ than three of my high school's football players put together, and I had major problems.
So as far as I'm concerned, discrimination comes from all sides, just as many of you stated in previous comments. Not just from good ol' rich white politicians with an IQ of 80.
Bush has made many hideously stupid decisions and will continue to for the rest of this term. That's a fact.
Politicans will continue to be self-serving and do for those who can provide them money for their campaigns. That's a fact, too.
Hateful people are gonna continue to discriminate over dumb shit like race, class, education, sexuality, etc. Again, a fact.
Each person has to take a stand and change themselves before the world is going to evolve into somewhere truly worth living.
Now I'm pretty sure he don't care for poor people but I don't know if Bush is seriously racist or not... Personally, I get really sick of being blamed for being born White or what White people did many years before I was born. I ain't never owned a slave. I ain't never told a black person to go to the back of the bus. I have never in my life looked at someone and called them a "dirty nigger" or any other derogatory racial slur. And I damn sure didn't choose to be born into a a race that seems to only be known for a bigitory and hatred that I've never had.
Had to get that off my chest...
