Nineteen year old Rashawn Brazell's life was brutally taken in February after he disappeared from his home in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. Brazell's dismembered body parts were found in garbage bags strewn throughout the city.
Now a group of activists, promoters and leaders in the community have come together to celebrate the life and legacy of Rashawn Brazell. They will host host an event called "Brighter Days," the official launch party for the Rashawn Brazell Memorial Scholarship. The event takes place on Sunday, August 28 at Luke and Leroy, one of Rashawn’s favorite places to party, and the requested donation is $10, all of which "will be used to support the college education of a New York City student committed to the fight against racism, sexism and homophobia."

I think that this is a great way to both energize our community and memorialize this young man. I will definetly be there, and so should many in the Black LGBT community to show others we are not afraid, we support each other, and we will STAND!

A great use of the heart. Thank you. However, I must say that this also gives us an opportunity to shed light on the many dangers of being to quick to hook up with trade we don't know. I'm not saying that this was the case with Mr. Brazell but we know it's a possibility. Every year there are gay Black men of all ages robbed, found beaten, shot or stabbed to death by quick pick up trade. The stories abound. The issue is vitally important. Don't be silent about it.
